President’s Message What are the benefits of supporting and participating in the all‐volunteer Chuckanut Bay Community Association? Vice‐President Jennie Tuckerman and I have drafted a list of benefits of membership. Here's what we've come up with:  A friendly forum for residents to meet their neighbors and develop a community‐oriented atmosphere.  Programs of common interest at least twice per year at April and October community meetings.  Social activities such as the July ice cream social.  Access to a resident‐only, password‐ protected website which includes: o A User Bulletin Board, where residents can post messages regarding local criminal activity, lost pets, tradesmen recommendations, piano lessons, babysitting, etc. o An online community directory. o Neighborhood coordinators' contact information. o Summaries of Association presentations. o Board meeting minutes. o Access to local publications. o An archive of past Chuckanut News newsletters.  Email notifications of current information affecting our neighborhoods e.g. crime reports, road closures.  The Chuckanut News, a hard‐copy publication with activity and Park updates, interesting local stories, neighborhood coordinators' contact information, and the Bulletin Board.  A proposed printed community directory  Association support of projects such as: o The Chuckanut Community signs on Chuckanut Drive at north and south boundaries of the community. o Exercise equipment and other support to local fire department employees. o Reflective address markers to give emergency services immediate visibility of property addresses.  Publications of local interest, such as Chuckanut Chronicles, Chuckanut Memories, Chuckanut Cookery and Chuckanut Notecards. This current edition of the Chuckanut News includes a form for submitting your annual dues, which are a quite modest: $24 for a household or $12 for an individual. Please continue to support your association. And if you have not yet registered for access to the CBCA website, but would like access, send an email request to: [email protected]. Community Obituaries My friend, Jo Anne Feringer, died December 5th at the age of 90. She had moved from Seattle to Chuckanut Shore Road with her husband, Dick, in the late 1950's, when he began teaching at Western Washington University. She was an active and long‐time member of the League of Women Voters and drove out to the county to attend the meetings of the County Council, so that she could report their activities back to the organization. And, when she grew too old to make the long drive at night, the meetings were aired on TV, so that she could continue her reporting. She was also very active in Maple Alley, a volunteer group that served a free lunch every Friday to all that needed it. She prepared a dish, chopped vegetables, served and cleaned up afterwards. She did not talk about her service, but was one of those quiet, hard workers. We knew each other for 25 years, and I miss her a lot. We had often had morning coffee, laughed at jokes on the computer, liked the same kinds of movies, and walked together. She was a wonderful neighbor. She leaves behind two loving sons and a sweet cat, named Yoda, which will soon be homeless. Please call 733‐2793 if you might adopt her. By Ann Jones Richardson ___________________________________________________________________________________ Born and raised in Bellingham Washington, C. Patrick Daniels became part of the Chuckanut Community in 1967 when he married Charliett. Summertime found “Pat” running his Gillnet boat for the Salmon Fishing fleet in Petersburg Alaska. Returning sometimes as late as October, he worked construction in and around Whatcom County, winter through spring. In the 1980’s and 90’s he spent winters building boats as part of The Daniels Boat Building Company. An avid hunter and ecologist, Pat took food from the land. Always mindful to give back, he nurtured several local streams. He and several neighbors built protection for Salmon hatchlings, helping to maintain the local Salmon population. A diligent friend and neighbor, Pat always listened to his community. Caring for his neighbors Pat; brought wood for heat during a power outage, provided holly and cedar for Christmas decorations, phoned to ensure that the shout he’d heard was one of frustration only, and no help was needed. His neighbors cared back by sharing; pear apples in the fall, fresh caught crab in season, blueberries in the spring, and grandchildren any time possible. These all brought a twinkle to his eagle eye, and a smile to his bristly face. Pat Daniels embodied the Chuckanut Community Spirit. We were fortunate to know him, Passing away just after his 78th birthday in July. He is missed. By Louise A.
