Crummy commercial
music is at an all time
high. What does it
spell for the culture?
By Michael Gregoris
Gazette Staff
Hip-hop is one of the most underrated and contested musical
genres.
Since its inception in the 1970s, hip-hop and its associated culture have grown considerably. Yet, with growth comes change. Gone
are the days of velour suits and Adidas canvas shoes with no laces;
they have been replaced with sex, guns and crack cocaine.
The general feeling regarding hip-hop is it has turned negative in recent years. How is it that such a promising musical
genre has been distorted to the point where its integrity is
continually attacked?
Modern-day hip-hop has become a commercialized
shadow of its former greatness. No wonder everyone
thinks hip-hop is dead.
“I love real hip-hop that has a message and is hot at the
same time. As a DJ, a song that can teach something while
simultaneously getting me hyped is amazing to play,” DJ
Chedo, hip-hop DJ on CHRW’s The Come Up Show, says. “But
right now people don’t want to hear music that has knowledge; they’d rather just hear something that’s simple with
a hot beat.”

Blood clots, deaths linked to Evra
Health Canada documents 16 blood clots and two deaths since 2004
By Lauren Pelley
Gazette Staff
The Evra birth control patch may
be more convenient than the pill
for many Canadian women, but
new evidence suggests it may also
be more dangerous.
The January issue of Health
Canada’s Canadian Adverse Reaction Newsletter documented 16
cases of blood clots and one heart
attack in Evra patch users since its
arrival on the Canadian market in
2004. Two of the 17 patients reported to Health Canada died as a
result.
One documented case of death
was that of a 16-year-old, and most
of the 93 total adverse reactions
Health Canada received were from
women in their teens, 20s or early
30s.
The Evra patch, manufactured
by Janssen-Ortho Inc., is a prescription-only contraception patch that
adheres to the skin, delivering hormones into a woman’s body to prevent pregnancy.
According to IMS Health Canada, a market research company,
between January and November
2007, 274,617 Evra prescriptions
were dispensed from retail pharmacies.
So far, there has been no conclusive evidence linking the patch with
an increased risk of health prob-
lems versus other contraception
methods.
In a statement, Janssen-Ortho
defended Evra stating all forms of
birth control pose increased risks of
serious conditions like blood clots.
The Evra Patch at a Glance
Since entering the Canadian
market in 2004, the Evra patch
has been associated with:
- 93 cases of adverse reactions
- 17 cases involving blood clots
and heart attacks
- 2 deaths
– figures from Health Canada
“The risk of serious adverse
events is small in healthy women,
but increases significantly if associated with the presence of other risk
factors such as obesity or cigarette
smoking,” it said.
It added Evra is safe and effective when used according to
approved prescribing information.
New labeling requirements,
warning women of the patch’s higher risk of blood clots versus the pill,
were issued by Health Canada in
2006.
Dr. Michael Kovacs, an expert on
blood clots at the Schulich School
of Medicine and Dentistry,
explained problems can happen at
any age.
“Young women have a very high
chance of being on birth control ...
[health problems are] attributed
because of that,” Kovacs said.
Dr. Kovacs said for persons of
university age, the background risk
per year of blood clots is one in
10,000. With oral contraceptives,
this risk may increase to 3 in 10,000
— still a relatively small number.
“If the Evra patch has an
increased risk ... which no one
knows for sure, the absolute risk
would be, at most, 5 in 10,000 per
year,” Dr. Kovacs added.
Some women are concerned by
Health Canada’s red flags about the
Evra patch.
“I don’t think I’d feel comfortable
taking that,” Stephanie Shewchuk,
a third-year Western kinesiology
student said. “You know [pills] are
more reliable.”
Dr. Barbara Lent, associate professor in the department of family
medicine at Schulich, said hormonal contraception in its various
forms is a safe and effective option
for the majority of young women.
“We all need to pay attention to
these concerning cases, but not
overreact until we have better information,” Dr. Lent added.
Dr. Kovacs agreed, “Women
should discuss with their family
doctor or gynecologist about the
best method of birth control.”
151,000 estimated dead in Iraq

Australia: Our croc-loving pals are
always busying themselves with
important decisions, like choosing
the Word of the Year 2007.
Australia’s Macquarie Dictionary is holding an online vote to
decide on the best out of a list of 85
words. Some options include
words Gazette readers may be very
familiar with, such as floordrobe —
the use of a bedroom floor as substitute for a wardrobe — and
tanorexia: an obsession with tanning.
Other words have a more global
focus. “Globesity” is the worldwide
problem of rising obesity and Chin-

dia describes the combined economic and strategic importance of
China and India.
Pakistan: At least 22 people were
killed and 60 injured by a suicide
bomber in the city of Lahore.
The attack targeted a group of
police officers standing outside the
High Court building in preparation
for a protest by lawyers against the
rule of President Pervez Musharraf.
The blast was just one more act
of violence during a particularly
tense period for Pakistan surrounding the parliamentary elections.
Police reported that the suicide
bomber arrived on a motorbike and
blew himself up when police
approached.
Middle East: US President
George Bush is pushing for a peace
deal between Israelis and Palestinians. Bush will be meeting with
leaders of both groups in his first
trip to Israel and the West Bank
since 2001 to push for an agreement.
According to Bush, Israel should
not undermine the process of creating effective Palestinian security
forces. He also offered his advice to
Palestine, urging it to decide
between a state or the status quo.
Iraq: A study produced by both
the World Health Organization and
Iraq’s Ministry of Health declares
151,000 Iraqis have died as a result
of the war-related violence following the US invasion in 2003.
Officials emphasized the figure
was merely an estimate, although it
is the best they have so far.
The tally includes people who
died directly because of the war,
such as people killed in armed conflict or car bombings and land
mines. The war has also caused
instability resulting in collateral
damage, such as the inability to
deliver medical care. Deaths associated indirectly with the violence
were not reflected in the figure.
Kenya: Peace talks between
President Mwai Kibaki and opposition leader Raila Odinga have come
to a halt over the signing of a document outlining how the two parties
will deal with the election, which
has caused so much violence.
The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) opposition party said
Kibaki refused to sign the document, but the President’s office is
arguing ODM is refusing to hold
face-to-face talks without the presence of international mediators.
Ghanaian President John Kufuour was leading the peace talks and
said both sides have now agreed to
work under a panel that may be led
by ex-UN Secretary General Kofi
Annan.

USC agrees on Alley’s ciggys plebiscite question
Councillors and president agree student feedback is vital to any decision about cigarette sales in Mustang Alley
By Mike Hayes
Gazette Staff
The end is in sight for a ruling on
the sale of cigarettes in Mustang
Alley, as the University Students’
Council decided Wednesday night
to let students choose yes or no.
A plebiscite question on the
matter has been approved by council, which means Western students
will vote on the matter during the
USC elections next month.
The question chosen by council
reads: “Should the USC-operated
retail store, Mustang Alley, continue the sale of cigarettes?”
Joe Cariati, chief returning officer for the USC and member of the
Elections Committee responsible
for creating the question, explained
the process.
“[The Committee] wanted to
keep the plebiscite as simple and
straightforward as possible so students could easily understand and
hopefully make a decision.”
Though the plebiscite is nonbinding, the outcome of the vote
will give direction to a council that
has been divided since the issue
first appeared.
Some students may recall the
last plebiscite from 2004-2005. Students voted by a slim majority to
maintain the Thompson Recreation and Athletic Centre student
fee. That plebiscite saw 51 per cent
of 7,000 students vote in favour of
keeping the fee.
Science councillor Fred Wu, who
originally proposed Mustang Alley
stop selling cigarettes, spoke of the
process council went through to get
to this point.
“Councillors pride themselves
on careful critical thought. In order

to go through every angle of the
issue, it makes for what may seem
like tedious debate but really that’s
just the process,” Wu said.
Wu expressed a desire to not be
associated with either the yes or no
side of the campaign, though he did
offer advice to those supporting the
“No” campaign.
Some believe the original
motion was written to stop people
from smoking, Wu said. “That misconception may be the biggest
obstacle for the ‘No’ side.”
USC President Tom Stevenson
was reserved about the plebiscite.
“I think it’s important we get student feedback,” Stevenson said.
Facebook is worse than ’da crack
By Sarah Berman
Gazette Staff
You may not be addicted to heroin
or angel dust, but more university
students than ever are struggling
with a debilitating vice: Facebook
addiction.
The popular social networking
website is commonly used to
reunite old friends, post images,
arrange events and even sell old
textbooks. Among the 35,000 Western students and alumni who use
the site, some users develop addictive habits.
No, this is not a joke.
Addiction expert and professor
at King’s University College Rick
Csiernik called Facebooking a
“compulsive behaviour.”
Frequent messages, invites and
other notifications persuade users
to check more often. Csiernik calls
this phenomenon “intermittent
reinforcement.”
“Users get an emotional
reward,” he said. “They feel both
wanted and noticed.”
Not everyone is susceptible to
Facebook addiction. According to
Csiernik, biological, psychological
and social factors all play a role in
the development of compulsive
behaviours.
“An addict might have a social
phobia. ... On Facebook it’s easy for
people with low self-esteem to
socially reconstruct themselves,”
Csiernik said.
Sociology professor Paul Whitehead agreed the Internet can
become a source of dangerous
addictions. “For some it’s pornography or gambling, but for others
it’s social relationship sites [like
Facebook].
“People who become so habituated to the Internet neglect other
parts of their lives, like work, family and school.”
Whitehead added significant
social damage can occur when
might
“haveAna addict

”
— Rick Csiernik,

King’s University College.
these other responsibilities are
neglected.
On campus, Facebook use is
quite prevalent.
At the Spoke, fourth-year business management and organizational studies student Grace Sham
browsed Facebook’s pages on her
laptop.
“I go on [Facebook] four or five
times a day,” Sham said. “But it
depends on the day.” Sham added
connecting with out-of-province
friends was the main reason she
frequented the social networking
site.
Sham denied checking the site
during lectures. “I’m doing other
things in class.”
While checking his profile in the
University Community Centre Centrespot, second-year science student Matt Cloutier said he liked
knowing about events on Facebook.
Cloutier said he visits the site
about three times per day.
To kick a Facebook addiction,
Csiernik recommended reflecting
on what started the psychological
attachment. “Find out what it’s
replacing, and then think of the
alternatives,” he said.
“The Internet is an integral part
of our world — but there’s a dark
side to it,” Csiernik concluded. He
urged students who feel they have a
problem to consult Student Health
Services’ Counselling Centre.

Stevenson urged students to

Our favourite
new words
The New Year invites many resolutions and best-of lists.
Australia’s Macquarie Dictionary is holding a crucial
online vote to determine the Word of the Year 2007.
Voters will choose from a list of 85 words including
some topical words like globesity — the problem of rising
obesity around the globe — and Chindia — a noun to
describe to the emerging economic power and strategic
importance of China and India, and some social words like
floordrobe — the use of the floor as a substitute wardrobe.
If readers are the journalist’s fish sticks, then words are
the journalist’s bread and butter. Consequently, with any
talk of new words being coined, we at The Gazette are
weak in the knees with anticipation.
We chose words that best encapsulated this past year
or those that have become a larger part of our lexicon and
some just because they make us giggle.
In the spirit of the Aussies’ creativity, here are a few
gems:
1. Tanorexia: noun Have tanned skin, and a person
believes they are never tanned enough. Tanorexics are
distinguishable by their leathery, radioactive orange or
brown skin, heavily mascaraed eyelashes, penciled-in
eyebrows and burnt blonde hair. Some leave orange
marks on clothes and furniture.
2. Floordrobe: noun We loved this entry because it
totally encapsulated all the incomprehensible slobs working in the Gazette office. The way we figure it, you only
really need a path running from your bed, to your desk, to
your bedroom door. The rest is valuable clothes real
estate.
3. Tase: verb Used in the now infamous exclamation:
“Don’t tase me bro!” by Andrew Meyer, a student at the
University of Florida, in September at a John Kerry
speech. Tase has moved into our lexicon due to the volume of taser incidents this year.
4. Faceblocked: verb The crushing reality of requesting a friend on Facebook, and never getting that “Friend
Approval.” Thankfully, Facebook doesn’t notify you when
you’ve been shut down. If it did, our editors would have
zero self-esteem.
5. Onomanopoeia: noun The skill all men have to
mimic the sounds of vehicles and bodily functions. All the
Gazette men can do uncanny impressions of bodily functions, including a disturbingly real fapping noise. Bottomline: boys are disgusting. Eww.
Honourable mention goes to our new word: spandemic.
Spandemic: noun Refers to the overabundance of
spandex leggings or tights and misconception they are
pants and attractive. Unfortunately Western is experiencing a spandemic. Too many girls have been stuffed like
sausages into footless leggings that create bulges in all the
wrong spots. You know you have a spandemic when love
handles and camel toes are rampant.
We hope you find these terms enlightening and bellywarming. If not, go grab yourself some Voltaire and a latté.
But not before you add these words to your lexicon.

(There’s a) screw loose at Alibi
To the Editor:
I would like to relate a recent experience
from the Alibi Roadhouse.
After a night of drinks and good
times, my girlfriend, another friend and
I travelled to the Alibi in search of a
cheap breakfast. Upon arrival, the place
was completely empty and we were left
to seat ourselves.
Shortly after seating, the waitress
showed up and we all placed our orders.
My friend ordered bacon and eggs, while
my girlfriend and I ordered omelets.
The service was alright and the food
came out within a reasonable time. We
were enjoying the meal, talking and reminiscing about the previous night. When
I took the third bite of my omelet, I bit
down on something hard and metallic.
Initially, I thought it might be an earring (which would be gross as well) but
upon spitting it out it turned out to be a
screw! Disgusting! It was a relatively thick
metal screw approximately one inch in
length. I almost vomited as soon as I
came to this realization.
Immediately, my friends and I

Dec. 5, 2007
To the Editor:
If students [look online], they’ll understand why I volunteered to stand in front
of the Dundas Street Kentucky Fried
Chicken in a bikini on a freezing-cold
day.
[According to PETA and Kentucky
Fried Cruelty.com] chickens raised for
KFC are crammed by the tens of thousands into filthy, dark sheds where they
have barely enough room to spread a
wing.
Former employees of a chickencatching company in Canada have testified KFC’s chickens suffer broken bones
when they’re thrown into transport
crates for slaughter. At the slaughterhouses, their throats are cut and they are
often scalded alive in the de-feathering
tanks.

stopped eating the food and became
thoroughly disgusted with the thought of
how the food was prepared. How did a
screw end up in my omelet? There are
many places that I would expect to find a
screw, but the kitchen is not one of them.
Even if a screw were to be on the
kitchen counter, one would hope it
would be avoided and a recently cleaned
area would be devoted to the preparation of food. I can only speculate what
else may have been on the surface my
food was prepared on. Maybe some
metal shards to go along with the screw
or WD-40? The thought of it makes me
shudder.
Upon departure, I was not charged
for my bill; however, the waitress did not
even offer to have the other bills covered.
I was in such a state of shock and disgust
I didn’t argue. We paid for the two meals
and left the Alibi with no intention of

Five of KFC’s animal welfare advisors
have resigned out of frustration with the
company’s lack of progress on animal
welfare. Dr. Ian Duncan, a former University of Guelph professor and North
America’s leading expert on bird welfare,
described his experience as an advisor to

“Progress was extremely slow, which

Congratulations, Western administration, for once again failing to heed student complaints about the April 30 end
to examinations. We’ll be thanking you
as we struggle to pack up our belongings
while studying for finals.
It’s not as if we should have expected
exams to end at any time other than the
day our leases expire — to demonstrate
such applied learning after previous
years’ fiascoes would be uncharacteristic of an institution entirely disconnected from students.
I guess the “best student experience”
includes loading a U-Haul while we read
our textbooks. Clothes-folding and furniture-moving don’t in any way disturb
our concentration.
Maybe we should ask Paul Davenport
to move out of Gibbons Lodge on the
most important day of his working year
— I’m sure he wouldn’t be bothered in
the slightest.
Or better yet, maybe Western should
end exams on April 29 next year, as we
asked them to do last year, so that we
can all pack in peace when we finish.
We’ve made it clear in the past how
much of a pain this is, and thankfully
some of our landlords have accommodated us. In contrast, Western seems
incapable or unwilling to do the same.
I’m sure shortening the exam period
by one day wouldn’t cause total chaos on
campus.

BAPE, leaders in urban streetwear
By Eliot Hong

Chances are you’ve seen the hit
music video for “Crank That (Soulja Boy).” But you may have missed
when Soulja Boy declares, “Haters
get mad, ’cause I got me some
Bathing Apes,” as he points down at
his shoes. What are these so-called
‘Bathing Apes’?
For the answer, travel halfway
across the globe to Japan, where
Tomoaki Nagao, also known as
Nigo, DJs for the Japanese rap
group, Teriyaki Boyz. He’s also the
founder and head designer of the
influential streetwear company, A
Bathing Ape, otherwise known as
BAPE.
The name was coined from the
Japanese saying, “An ape bathing in
lukewarm water,” a reference to a
spiritual practise for overly pampered Japanese youth. BAPE was
made to speak out creatively
against those spoiled by commercialized society.
Ironically, it’s the youth that
Nigo initially mocked that fuels
“Prep-Hop,” the emerging fashion
trend in popular media. Custom
shoes, zip-up hoodies, large belt
buckles, flamboyant designs and
trucker and fitted caps have
become the new gold standard.
The trend is a step away from
the dominant baggy hip-hop style.
The creative forces of hip-hop are
leading the change, including
Kanye West, Lupe Fiasco, Pharrell
Williams, Andre 3000 and Lil’
Wayne.
BAPE focuses on bright, colourful logo-inspired designs printed
on high-quality material, ranging
from jackets, hoodies, sweaters
and T-shirts. BAPE’s collection has
also spread to include printscreened jeans, hats, belts and
accessories.
The company has some unique
ideas, like hoodies that zip all the
way to the top with eyes, animals,
or robots on their mask-like hoods.
Nike Air Force 1-influenced BapeStas are also popular, which are
known for the star jutting across the
side of the shoe with custom
colours and designs that often represent pop culture.
What drives these products, for
both collectors and fashionobsessed fans, are the limited runs,
hard-to-find exclusivity, and high
prices — hoodies can range from
$300 to $450 USD and BapeSta
Shoes start at $200 USD. As of now,
there are only six places in the
world where you can “officially”
buy BAPE — Japan, Hong Kong,
London, New York, Los Angeles and
Taipei.
However, BAPE is not the only
company leading the charge. Nigo
and Pharrell Williams joined forces
to form Billionaire Boys Club (BBC)
and Ice Cream Shoes, which are
made of organic material. Lifted
Research Group (LRG), “World
Famous” brand STUSSY, as well as
Evisu, 10 Deep, The Hundreds,
Reigning Champ, Neighborhood,

influence and represent “PrepHop.”
The focus of these brands is creativity and making wearers stand
out, both of which inspire a “revolution” and a “fighting the masses”
attitude that makes these brands
unique.

Men’s Fashion 101: Finding your own style
Never underestimate solid colours and a great pair of kicks
By Jennifer Urbanski
Gazette Staff
Most fashion articles focus on
female fashion since the ladies
are generally more interested.
But the truth is, guys are interested in style, too. Many men put
time and effort into their look
and for them, shopping is just as
fun as it is for girls.
However, the lack of help and
information available can cause
some guys to give up on keeping
up with the latest trends. For guys
who want to improve their fashion sense, a little help is all you
need to begin your style journey.
Girls learn early on that owning a few key items can improve
their style tremendously. So
choosing a few good articles of
clothing can provide numerous
looks simply by mixing and
matching.
Finding a good pair of jeans is
probably the hardest task. For
everyone, styles, fits, and even
brands differ. The most important thing to remember when
taking on this challenge is to be
patient and try on, try on, try on!
Visit a variety of different stores
and experiment with different fits
to find exactly what is right for
you — it’s worth it in the end.
Future jean purchases can be
made at the same stores since
brands are consistent in their
designs. Good places to start the
search include American Eagle,
Guess, Levi’s, or department
stores like The Bay or Holt Renfrew that carry a variety of
brands. These stores have
numerous fits, cuts, and designs
all in one spot, so trying styles on
is much easier.
Shoes are an item that guys
often overlook, but a great pair is
one of the most important variables in the fashion equation.
Many girls argue that the first
thing they look at is shoes — this
is true in most cases. A guy can
rock the trendiest of looks, but as
eyes gaze from top to bottom,
shoes can leave an important last
impression.
Finding a pair of shoes that
look good with any outfit means
looking for neutral shades like
black or brown. Try to keep
things simple. Having nice shoes
doesn’t mean finding flashy styles
or daring designs. Stores like
Town Shoes, Aldo, or Sterling
offer a variety of styles and
employ male staff members who can make
things much easier.
Sweaters
and
shirts are pretty standard.
The
hot
colours for winter
this year are orange
and green, so
adding
these
colours to your
closet is more easily done through a
good shirt.
Sticking to solid
colours is the safest
bet since patterns
and other designs
can get confusing. If
you want to add some
pop to your look,
choose a daring colour
in a collared
shirt that you
can play down
by throwing a
neutral sweater
overtop.
A great look this season is an
orange collared shirt underneath
a black or charcoal gray sweater.
Let the bottom of the shirt hang
out the bottom of the sweater
and fold your collar over the neck
of the sweater. Pay attention to
window displays in men’s stores
to also get some ideas.
It’s important to note that
good style requires effort. While
these tips are intended to make
the shopping experience easier
and less confusing, they do not
overrule the patience necessary
in finding the right piece. Trying
on different styles, sizes and
brands is the only way to discover the right article of clothing or the best pair of shoes.
Uncovering the deal of a lifetime means sorting through
racks of clothing. Don’t give up.
With a little effort and determination you can go from an average Joe to a sexy style stud in no
time.

Juno delivers with
talented actors,
smart script
By Caitlin Conroy
Gazette Writer
Juno
Directed by: Jason Reitman
Starring: Ellen Page, Michael Cera,
Jason Bateman, Jennifer Garner
Jason Reitman’s second film, Juno,
has been racking up both box office
dollars and critical reviews, with
three Golden Globe nominations
and increasing calls for Oscar nods.
The film may be a semi-romantic comedy, but its originality is a
breath of fresh air that will please
audiences of both genders. Though
the main character may be a pregnant teenager, this film is no ordinary chick flick.
The story revolves around two
high school students, Juno MacGuff
(Page) and Paulie Bleeker (Cera),
whose first sexual encounter
together results from boredom and
takes place on a dusty old rundown
La-Z-Boy.
After discovering she’s pregnant,
the eccentric Juno makes her way
to the local women’s clinic, where
she attempts to “procure a hasty
abortion.” While sitting in the waiting room Juno has an epiphany
and decides to have the baby then
give it up for adoption. After
searching in the local Pennysaver
for a couple looking to adopt,
Juno’s quirky best friend, Leah
(Olivia Thirlby), spots Mark and
Vanessa Loring (Bateman and Garner), a picture-perfect couple desperate for a baby.
The strength of the film stems
from the acting of Halifax native
Page, who nails Juno’s understated
and naïve personality. Page’s quickwitted humour comes across as
sincere and unassuming instead of
blunt and hostile, which helps
make her character relatable.
Page seems eerily normal; the
circumstances of her pregnancy
(having unprotected sex with a
track nerd) are more believable
than typical movie teen pregnancies.
Juno rings true with the audience and touches on several
themes that affect young people
today including teenage pregnancy, abortion, divorce, self-confidence issues and relationship
struggles.

People watching is an art form.
After living in New York for most
of my life, people watching has not
only become a hobby but an art.
There are too many people in the
city to miss imagining their
lifestyles and guessing the music
they’re listening to based on their
style. It’s not a power trip to judge
random people; it’s just fascinating. Children do it all the time so
why not engage ourselves in the
innocent activity we’re all nostalgic
for?
Over the break, I took time to reengage in this popular activity. A
few friends and I would head to
downtown Toronto (a perfect spot
for ultimate people watching)
choose a bench and watch the
passersby.
You don’t just watch people,

though — you point out their mannerisms, guess their ambitions,
even look at the way they walk their
dogs. Sometimes you catch yourself prolonging your gaze at a hipster’s neon shades or wondering
how someone can walk so casually
in gold stilettos in the snow.
Real people watching is harder
than it looks. There’s a fine line
between perverted staring and the
simple observation of pedestrians.
One must let go of their stalker tendencies and people-watch simply
for personal enjoyment.
It’s about combining subtlety
and timing in order to maximize
one’s people watching experience.
Add your knowledge of pop culture references and the perfect
locale and you can make a day of
it.
For example, scoping out doppelgangers (a “double” or lookalike) is a more rewarding sub-category of people watching, especially for the pop culture-savvy.

district. For peak people watching,
we ate by large windows, maintaining a lookout for doppelgangers.
The final results were satisfying. We
saw “Desmond” from Lost in a
green cargo jacket, a Dwight lookalike from The Office (although not
as tall), and our favourite find, a
David Caruso doppelganger, sunglasses and all.
But don’t make the mistake of
calling out a doppelganger — he or
she may be the actual person.
Embarrassingly, I’ve sat next to a
Dallas Green doppelganger at a
restaurant and talked to a Sean
Lennon look-alike after a concert,
only to find out it was actually Dallas Green and Sean Lennon after
the fact. Nevertheless, debating
the resemblance of a doppelganger with friends is always fun,
whether he or she is or isn’t the real
deal.
You don’t have to be in a big city
to enjoy this wondrous sport. Concrete Beach is the downtown
Toronto of Western in terms of
people watching. On sunny days,
students line the benches in front
of the UCC and watch students
pass by through their massive
shades. You’d be surprised how
many people you begin to recognize — there’s the crush you had in
Saugeen three years ago, the cocky
bastard you met at The Frog and
the extremely tall girl in your class.
Other topnotch people watching places nearby include the family-friendly Victoria Park, Prince
Albert’s Diner at the corner of Richmond and Albert streets and any
Starbucks with large windows.
So take some time out of your
frantic schedules to just sit back
and watch your fellow human
beings. It beats going on Facebook.

Innovation, dexterity keep hip-hop alive

cutter, one-hit wonder nonsense
like Soulja Boy and T-Pain souring
the airwaves with their blend of
monotonous beats and weak
lyrics, the status of hip-hop isn’t as
bleak as it appears to be.
Dr. Norma Coates, professor in
the Faculty of Information and
Media Studies, reveals there is a
lot more substance and culture
behind hip-hop than it’s credited
for.
“It boils down to several figures
who become the focal point of
hip-hop and you don’t get a real
picture of what’s really out there,”
Coates explains. “Rappers like
Snoop Dogg and 50 Cent are iconic, and consequently, their lyrics
share the same status; it blurs
everything else going on in the
genre.”
The MCs and DJs who occupy
the periphery of hip-hop use the
latest technology to propel its
vibrant, dynamic sound and sample older records as a way to innovate their craft, not sell records.
“Hip-hop is a ‘digging’ culture.
Many DJs and producers go to the
record store and look for old vinyls
to experiment with,” Coates says.
“Hip-hop isn’t concerned with
hiding the origins of its beats. The
culture is built on returning to
past artists. There’s also a lot of
expertise in hip-hop because of
the role of sampling, not to mention the required dexterity of the
MC.”
Canadian rapper and London
native Shad agrees hip-hop is
rooted in other categories of
music.
“That’s an essential characteristic of hip-hop because it directly
references the past,” Shad says.
Sometimes an artist releases an
original composition that garners
massive amounts of attention,
however, there is the threat by
other artists to imitate rather than
innovate.
“The record industry doesn’t
care as long as the artist is selling
records,” Coates contends. “If
Gnarls Barkley is selling, the executives would say ‘Let’s get three
more bands out there that sound
the same.’ It’s nothing new; it’s
been around since the ’50s.”
Hip-hop’s fixation with sampling also suggests a younger generation of music listeners will
grow without recognizing the original works, subsequently crediting
the artist for work that isn’t theirs
in a cyclical pattern of ignorance.
Really, by these
standards it wouldn’t
be that hard.

and the music industry is aware of
this. The creation of variety television programs that showcase
artists is an attempt to mimic hiphop’s powerful influence.
“Television is one of the last
places where you can get a large
amount of people together, like
American Idol, who will hear this
music and go buy it,” Coates
explains. “We are a world of niches. How many people have picked
up songs off of The O.C. or Grey’s
Anatomy that aren’t on major
labels?”
For many hip-hop fans, it’s difficult to stomach the garbage frequently churned out, but they can
take solace in the fact it accounts
for a small margin of the scene.
Past the cheesy underbelly of
commercial hip-hop, there’s a
more stimulating world — sometimes you just have to dig a little
deeper.

person that doesn’t listen to techno and is strictly hip-hop might go
check out some more Daft Punk
[which Kanye West sampled in
‘Stronger’].”
Like Chedo, Shad sees hip-hop
as a platform to expose listeners to
different musical forms.
“A kid is going to enjoy music
whether or not he knows what the
driving force behind it is. Hip-hop
has turned people on to older
music. Sooner or later some
inquiring mind is going to find out
where that sample came from.
That’s the power of hip-hop. It
exposes a wide variety of genres.”
With a seemingly limitless
amount of musical vitality, hiphop is one of the few genres where
the driving force of the music isn’t
singular, but rather a plurality —

American Gladiators
finds perfect blend of
drama, game show
and sporting contest
Awk-Ward
Dave Ward
News Editor
American Gladiators has returned
and all of a sudden I’m a giddy 10year- old again.
I definitely have a huge bias
when it comes to this tacky TV reincarnation. I loved American Gladiators when I was a kid. Like any
childhood favourite returning from
the dead, I would love the new one
even if it sucked.
I’m no purist either. I’m obviously upset the original theme song
is gone, and my favourite event
involving contestants in giant hamster balls is missing too. I choose to
focus on the similarities to the original.
The emotional background
information on contestants still
gives us a reason to cheer someone
on. The ridiculous names and costumes for gladiators are more
ostentatious than ever and it’s fantastic.
Last year’s biggest sports headlines were dominated by negative
stories featuring drug use and criminal charges.
American Gladiators is a breath
of fresh air even as a pseudo sport,
if only because the steroid use is so
obvious no one would bother to
deny it. Plus, hairy and unwashed
gladiator Wolf is more likely to be in
a dog fight than run one.
The show has crossed the gulf
between TV drama, game show and
sporting event. I’ve cleverly dubbed
this genre sport-o-tainment.
The XFL tried to span this
bridge. It was too much sport for
drama junkies, and too much of a
joke for sports fans. Average Joes
took a shot at reality sports as well,
but it lacks the over-the-top sensationalism of Gladiators.
When the announcer, following
the face wash of a contestant by a
gladiator named Justice, drops
gems like, “Justice was served
facially!” I promptly forget the
Writer’s Guild strike.
Unlike pompous windbags like
John Madden and Pierre McGuire,
the hosts and announcers on Gladiators know they aren’t worthy of
being taken seriously. Or at least no
one else believes they should be
taken seriously.
American Gladiators is a return
to ’80s pro wrestling in all its glory.
Remember the good ol’ days when
Hulk Hogan and the Ultimate Warrior battled it out in colourful duds
and we could never be sure if it was
scripted or not?
Hogan, trying valiantly to revive
his career, is the perfect fit as host.
His ridiculous voice and his habit of
making a statement and then shoving the microphone in a contestant’s face as if it had been a question is priceless.
This show is what wrestling can
no longer be since people gave up
claiming it was real.
For those put off by wrestling’s
cheesiness, or TV drama, Gladiators offers something new. By
adding the reality game show element, the obvious cheesiness is
appropriate.
Until American Gladiators is
proven to be scripted, I’m in. [I quietly believe it is scripted — the way
the first red female contestant of
the season hilariously flailed on a
conveyor belt while the blue contestant came back from a huge
deficit is too amazing to be real].
American Gladiators is TV at its
most effective: mindless, oversexed
and mostly a waste of my time. I
love every second of it.

IF THIS SHOW IS TRASHY, THEN I’M OSCAR THE GROUCH. Although the
old American Gladiators and its recent new incarnation are very cheesy,
they represent the type of entertainment television is famous for.

I WISH I COULD BEND THE RULES LIKE THIS DUDE BENDS THE GRAPHITE. The Mustangs’ hockey teams
can fire the biscuit like a frustrated Keebler elf. The men’s team proved this decisively in Germany and the
Netherlands over the break, introducing the Euros to a rough brand of Canadian hockey.
Euro-trip introduces hockey
team to competition abroad

While many students reconnected
with friends over the holiday season with hot chocolate and turkey,
Western’s men’s hockey team opted
to bond with schnitzels and steins
of fine lager.
Between Dec. 27 and Jan. 7, the
team traveled to Europe to take on
five teams from the Netherlands
and Germany (four of which were
professional squads) and do a little
sightseeing around both countries.
The 12-day trip has been over a
year in the making, according to
Western forward Sal Peralta.
“Last year [head coach Clarke
Singer] was interested [in going]
and we basically put some
fundraising stuff together,” he said.
“We got interest from the team
and it was a good opportunity for
the young guys to see what kind of
hockey is out there for later on and
for the older guys who are looking
to play pro and play there the following year. It was a good eyeopener for opportunities outside of
where we are now.”
Overall, the team finished with
four wins and one loss during the
trip and had a chance to see the
nuances of the European game.
“The funny thing is they don’t hit
a lot over there ... we were way more
physical than them,” Peralta said.
“The refs and the coaches on the
other team told us to stop hitting or
they were going to call penalties. I
guess it was a little rough for them.
It is a big ice surface and we have a
lot of quick guys on the team so you
can really do well.”
Singer agreed the European
game is much less physical and the
competition was not quite up to par
with what they were hoping.
“The Canadian style is very
physical ... [and] there is little to no
contact in the European game,” he
said. “I wish the competition had
been a bit better for us.”
The atmosphere of the games
was also something unique for
many of Western’s players, Peralta
said.
“It was nice to see some of the
rinks. Some were half indoor half
outdoor, which was really good.
The fans over there are pretty into
it, too. They got right into it with
some celebrations with our team. It
was a good experience altogether.”
Besides becoming acquainted
with the European brand of hockey, the players also showed their talents to local scouts.
“There were a few sports agents
there who came and talked to the
guys and said there are opportunities for guys to come over there in
the future,” Western goalie Brad
Topping said. “Most of the guys
should be able to go to Germany
and play in division three.”
Three former Western stalwarts,
Mike Rice, Steve Benedetti, and
Jamie Chamberlain, currently play
for various pro teams in Europe
and met up with the team during its
trip.
“They love playing there ... anytime you get to play hockey and get
paid for it — it is a bonus.”
Beyond the differences in playing style, the team had a chance to
take part in some unique experi-
ences.
“There was one game we were
playing where after the game the
whole team gets up and does a
cheer together with the fans and
they included us in there too,” Peralta said. “Our team all got together
and did a cheer with the fans and it
was pretty cool.”
Being from Canada, the team
also drew some extra attention
from spectators.
“You had people coming up asking for autographs and wanting a
hat or something. It makes you
appreciate where you’re at. Some of
us might be done soon ... and you
wonder when the last time is going
to be that you get to sign an autograph. So it was nice to see the
attention you were getting,” Peralta
said.
Although the training was a little slack in comparison to their regular routine, the players had the
opportunity to bond with each
other and experiment with the
usual lines.
“The time we spent together got
us a lot closer,” Peralta said. “It gave
us a better idea of who we are
around.
“Some guys played with different people, which gives the coaches a different look on what is going
on, too.”
For the team, this extended road
trip was not just about playing
hockey but about the experience
together.
“When you head to a place like
that ... it was all new for them,”
Singer said. “It was as much about
experiencing European culture as it
was about hockey.”

Basketball, hockey
on campus Saturday
By Stephanie Ramsay

Coming off last week’s win over the
Brock Badgers, the men’s basketball team (4-5) will face the Waterloo Warriors (4-6) this Saturday at
Alumni Hall.
Be sure to watch the trio of
Matthew Curtis, Brad Smith and
Colin LaForme. In the squad’s victory over Brock, Curtis led the Mustangs with a game-high 23 points
and Smith notched another 21
points. In his home debut as a Mustang, LaForme recorded a doubledouble with 10 points and 13
boards. Tip-off is at 2 p.m.
The women’s ballers (9-2) follow
the men’s team on Saturday, looking to beat the visiting Warriors (65). The women’s squad currently
occupies second place in the
Ontario University Athletics West
division, just four points behind the
McMaster Marauders. The women’s
game begins at 4 p.m.
Also, the women’s hockey team
(6-8-4) is playing at 4 p.m. The
squad faces the visiting York Lions
(7-8-3) at Thompson Arena.
Presently, Western trails the Lions
by one point in the OUA standings.
Prior to the break, the women’s
team strung together two consecutive victories, defeating the Queen’s
Golden Gaels 4-1 and the UOIT
Ridgebacks 7-3. Rookie forward
Holly Ouellette had a hat trick in
the win over the Ridgebacks. The
team needs to continue its winning
ways in order to remain in the postseason hunt.
On Saturday night, the men’s
hockey team (12-2-0) will take to
the ice to battle the Toronto Varsity
Blues (9-8-0). Western currently sits
atop the OUA Far West division with
27 points; the Varsity Blues hold
second place in the Mid East division with 19 points. The puck drops
at 7:05 p.m.
On Sunday afternoon, the
women’s hockey team is back in
action, facing the Varsity Blues (133-0) in a 4 p.m. game at Thompson
