UMCG is one of the largest public healthcare institutions in the Netherlands.
With more than 10,000 employees, UMCG is constantly building on the future
of health, based on bringing together clear ideas, brilliant people and excellent infrastructure. UMCG aims to be an internationally leading University
Medical Center, where knowledge about health, disease and healthcare is
generated, tested, shared and applied. UMCG’s core activities are to carry
out cutting-edge scientific research from ‘bench to bedside’ and to provide
state-of-the-art healthcare. In addition, UMCG is leading in the educational
training of students, medical and biomedical researchers, doctors and other
academic professionals. Breaking new ground, sharing knowledge and caring
for people are the core values that reflect UMCG’s strategic choices with
respect to investment, collaboration and innovation.

Healthy Ageing is the central theme of all UMCG’s core activities. Healthy
ageing is a lifelong process that starts before conception, with parents who
pass on their genes and with these the risks and opportunities for either a
healthy life course or the occurrence of various illnesses. In addition, lifestyle
and various other, environmental factors have a major influence on the balance between health and illness. The UMCG’s multidisciplinary research teams
extend from fundamental biological and (pre)clinical research through applied
research into social-societal effects of disease and health. In this way results
can be translated rapidly into adequate and/or improved prevention and treatment methods, leading to new insights, know-how and products.
