Focus on Excellence
When you make your gift to the George A. Smathers
Libraries’ Books of Honor Fund, a letter of acknowledgement and a copy of the bookplate will be sent to you
and the honoree or his or her family.
The University of Florida George A. Smathers Libraries
ranks consistently in the top 40 research libraries in
the nation. This is a great achievement, but one that
is becoming more challenging to reach. Although the
UF Libraries depends on state funding to sustain its
operations, state dollars are proving to be increasingly
insufficient to provide for adequate collection growth. In
this environment, private support provides the “margin
of excellence” that helps keep the libraries among the
nation’s best. The generosity of parents, alumni, faculty
and friends has been essential in enabling the libraries
to continue to offer the wealth of resources needed by
students and scholars in the community.
In order for the UF Libraries to be able to continue to
offer a scholarly research environment that will foster
excellence, it must continue to acquire new and timely
materials in all disciplines to the greatest extent possible.
UF’s success depends in large measure on the excellence
and accessibility of its library resources.
Books of Honor Fund
In response to these concerns, the Books of Honor Fund
was created to ensure that students and faculty have the
library resources that are crucial to their studies and
teaching. The fund was established to guarantee the UF
community the essential resources needed to maintain
the quality of education, learning and creativity that it has
come to expect.
You are invited to participate in the program by providing
the libraries with the gift of new books in the subject area
of your choosing (Panama Canal Museum Collection,
Latin American Collection, arts, humanities, science
and engineering or social sciences). A bookplate will be
