There are some things that are so fundamental to understand and learn that it would be
impossible to proceed in life successfully without first learning them. If you want to be a
mathematician—performing advanced trigonometry, calculus and statistical analysis—you
had better first learn to count, add and memorize your multiplication tables. To try to do
advanced math functions without first learning the fundamentals might sometimes yield
success, but ultimately it will lead to confusion, frustration and ultimately failure.
In the human moral existence, there are some things that are fundamental we understand
before advancing. One such fundamental is coming to fear and reverence our Creator.
Consider John Calvin’s comments:
“men are never duly touched and impressed with a conviction of their insignificance,
until they have contrasted themselves with the majesty of God. Frequent examples of
this consternation occur both in the Book of Judges and the Prophetical Writings; so
much so, that it was a common expression among the people of God, “We shall die, for
we have seen the Lord…[Additionally] we see Abraham the readier to acknowledge
himself but dust and ashes the nearer he approaches to behold the glory of the Lord,
and Elijah unable to wait with unveiled face for His approach; so dreadful is the sight.
And what can [feeble] man do…when even the Cherubim themselves must veil their
faces in very terror?” (Institutes, 1.1.3)
Only when we come to truly see God for who HE really is, can we ever begin to see
ourselves for who WE really are. This is THE starting place for human moral living before
God. The brightness of his glory melts away and exposes all illusions of our self-deceptions.
Indeed “God is light and in Him is no darkness at all” (1 Jn. 1:5). The penetrating light
exposes even the most inward and remote crevices of the soul. Humans who are living sinful
lives naturally want to avoid being exposed: “For everyone practicing evil hates the light and
does not come to the light, lest his deeds should be exposed” (Jn. 3:20). However, there is
great blessing for those who come into the light: But he who does the truth comes to the
light, that his deeds may be clearly seen, that they have been done in God” (Jn. 3:21; cf. 1
Jn. 1:7).
Truly encountering the God of heaven in this way can be nothing less than revolutionary and
transformational. Just like Isaiah was an eternally changed man after witnessing the glory of
God (Isa. 6:1-5), all who truly see the “brightness of His glory” through the Christ will also
be eternally changed (Heb. 1:3; 2 Cor. 4:4-6; 7:10ff). We are changed because we strive to
no longer allow ourselves to be deceived by (1) comparing ourselves to others, (2) thinking
more highly of ourselves than we ought, (3) thinking we do not stand in need of God’s grace
and mercy, (4) idols that vie for our devotion. Being broken over our own sinfulness should
cause us to pursue God and His righteousness above all else (Mt. 6:33).
I read a quote this week that says, “Mature Christians don’t look horizontally for acceptance.
They look vertically.” May God help us all to see HIM for who He is and bring our entire
lives into submission to His will through the Christ in fear and awe.
Elders/Deacons Meeting: Saturday, April 25, at 8:30 AM.
Work Visitation Team Meeting: Work visitation team 3 will meet in the fellowship
room between services.
Potter Children’s Home: The pantry item for the month of April is grape jelly.
Primetimers/Sunshiners Meeting: Saturday, May 2 at 11 AM.
Bible Bowl: The next Bible Bowl will be at Olive Branch on Monday, April 27. It will
cover 2 Samuel 9-11.
Bible Studies: We will be meeting each Thursday at 10 AM here at the building for
Bible study. Also we will be having a Bible Study at Emeritus every Thursday at 2
PM.
N.C.I.S.: Noble Christians In Scripture: The N.C.I.S. reading list for this week is on
the table in the foyer. There is also a sign up sheet on the board next to the office
for those who would like to host a meeting.
Youth Devo’s: Our plan for 2015 is to have youth devo’s throughout the year.
We need our members to host these meetings. If you are willing to host, please
see the sign up sheet on the youth board.
Prom Alternative: This is scheduled for May 9th. We will be eating somewhere at
8 P.M. and taking pictures beforehand. More details are coming. We need
commitments from 7-12 grade.
Collierville Youth Rally: Saturday, May 16, starting at 9:00 AM.
