DOING A JIGSAW PUZZLE 39
Look at all the pieces, they are
all different. Since the cutting
is done along the lines of the
illustrations, to make better
and more beautiful puzzles,
the pieces have therefore less
curves than a classic puzzle
and move a little more while
you are doing it. Set your
puzzle on a non-slippery surface, like a Tournepuzzles* or
a Jigboard*, or a paper sheet
covered in removable glu*.
Start off by ordering the borders and by flipping all the
pieces image side up.
Assemble the outlines. Observe the shape of the piece
that you are looking for, and
try to identify it among the
pieces that are aside. The
pieces will position themselves perfectly along each
other, there is no need to
force them in the position.
Don’t let the difficulty discourage you, sometimes
there can be ten minutes during which you feel stumped
and then you place 3 or 4 at
the same time !
To glu your puzzle in, you
can use the spray glu cans
seen on page 39, or also
use adhesive tape strips on
the back of it, and rub the
strips towards the center to
keep the pieces close to each
other.

NON-TOXIC SPRAY GLU
The light glu 505 can be sprayed onto a sheet that you then place
over the puzzle, in order to flip it. It’s a temporary glu, that evaporates with time. Once your puzzle is flipped over, you can stick it
together with adhesive tape strips. The 404 glu is used on a sheet
on which you are making the puzzle, so that the pieces don’t move.
You can also use it to place glu on a piece of paper that you will
place on the back of your puzzle once it was completed and undo
it later on. The 303 glu allows a definitive fixing of your puzzle.

THE CUTTING

Experts in manipulating the jigsaw, our skilled artisans move the pieces of wood expertly
in their hands to create one by one the pieces with shapes that are completely unique. The
artisan separates colors, isolates the elements of the drawings to create as much difficulty
as possible. Our puzzles are three times more difficult than regular puzzles ! Georges Perec
explains it very well in la Vie Mode d’emploi (Hachette editions) :
« The role of the jigsaw puzzle maker is difficult to define. In most cases - for all the cardboard puzzles especially - the puzzles are made by a machine and cutting them does not
answer a specific necessity : a cutting press adjusted along the same cutting pattern cuts
through the layers of cardboard, always in the same identical way ; the real jigsaw puzzler
rejects these puzzles, not only because they are made with cardboard instead of being
made with wood, not because a model is reproduces on the box that wraps it, but because
this type of cutting makes the very purpose of a puzzle disappear ; it doesn’t matter much,
unlike the deep-rooted idea strongly implanted in people’s minds, if the image is supposed
to be easy (a war scene in the style of Vermeer for example, or a color photograph of an
Austrian castle), or difficult (a Jackson Pollock, a Pissaro or - miserable paradox - a solid
color white puzzle), it is neither the subject of the painting not the technique of the painter
that makes a puzzle difficult, but the subtlety of the cutting, and a random cutting will produce a random difficulty, ranging from extreme simplicity on the borders, the details, the
spots of light, the well-defined objects, the lines, the transitions, and a tediousdifficulty for
the rest : the cloudless sky, the sand, the prairie, the labored field, the shadowy spots, etc.»
The cutting depends on the style of the pqinter, of the way the cutting artisan perceives
his brush strokes. The patterns play a part as well : the sea pieces will be undulating like
waves, the sky will have clouds and the stone will be cut in squarer pieces. It’s the respect
of the artwork that guides the cutting artisan.

The jigsaw puzzles were invented in Great Britain, in the 1760s. In order to teach children
geography, a British mapmaker built the first puzzleby sticking a map on a mahogany
plank, and cutting it along the geographic borders.
Children puzzles then develop with the printing of other educational subjects (religious),
and then leisure subjects (animals, nursery rhymes). The puzzles are then cut with a hand
saw.
At the end of the XIXth century, electric
fretsaws will be used, not so different from
the ones used today by Puzzle Michèle
Wilson.
Puzzles for adults start appearing around
1900 in the USA. They become fashionable in
the high society of Boston, then New-York.
Very difficult, they were cut precisely along
the lines of color and are also very expensive
at the time. Russian aristocrats are also
assiduously into puzzles, and implant them
in France during its exile from 1917, under
the «Vera» brand.
Michèle Wilson starts her activity in 1975, taking after Vera who thaught her the craft.
She develops the Puzzle Michèle Wilson until 1997. Passionate about puzzles and with
an enthusiast team, Sophie Ollé-Laprune pursued the artisan craft of art wooden puzzles
cutting.
