Teaching life lessons
ON and OFF the court
From The President
Sarah L. Pernell
CTTA-Central Texas Tennis Association
was established in 1997. I started
working with tennis when my youngest
son, Tommie, began playing at the age of
7. I had to entertain him while my 2
oldest children were involved in several
other activities. Tennis seemed to fit.
He went to St. Steven's for 2.5 years,
graduated from Bowie H.S. and went to
college on a tennis scholarship from
Southern University, a Division 1 school,
and did very well. As he continued
playing and moving up the ranks for
Texas top players, I learned more about
the sport, and even picked it up as a
hobby. Now, my entire family plays. In
fact, Tommie has now joined me in
providing lessons to the children and
adults in our program as our Head Pro.
Membership Opportunity
CTTA started with only a hand full of kids and
after some years, have grown to over 1200.
CTTA is a not for profit organization and has no
paid staff. We don't have a "real" tennis site to
call our home, but make use of city parks,
schools, and recreation centers. Our programs
are year round, with an after school program
during the school year and NJTL (National
Junior Tennis League) during the summer, which
has nearly 500 kids. Through the years, we’ve
added Team Tennis, Spring/Winter Break
Clinics, Ladies Group, Senior class, and Private
Lessons to our list.
CTTA, in conjunction with another not for profit
organization called Project Helping Hand, we are
able to provide tutoring, mentoring, counseling,
clothing, food, housing and utility assistance to
many of our participants with the help of various
individuals and businesses throughout the city.
Volunteer Opportunity
There are various ways to support CTTA; one is
by becoming a volunteer. CTTA is always
seeking volunteers to assist with our year-round
programs and activities and tennis programs.
We also have a need in our education area
offering tutoring and mentoring to our youth.
We also host an annual tournament, junior play
dates, adult mixers, and other special events
throughout the year.
Volunteers are vital to our program and your
commitment to participate whenever possible
will help to ensure a successful year for CTTA.
Besides we have too much fun to keep it all to
our selves!
Join Our Family
CTTA is always looking to add more
members to our growing family. Since we
are non-profit, our membership is based on
the relationships we build with those in our
community. We hope you take an interest
and join us for some tennis fun!
