PLUMgrid Open Networking
Suite for OpenStack
PLUMgrid provides secure virtual network
infrastructure for private and public clouds.
The PLUMgrid Open Networking Suite (ONS)
enables customers building large-scale,
production-grade OpenStack clouds to offer
a broad array of advanced services to their
users. It provides a comprehensive suite of
production-grade, fully resilient, distributed
virtual network functions ranging from L2 to
L3 services, NAT, security policies, and DHCP/
DNS services. Built on PLUMgrid Platform®
and IO Visor® technology, the software suite
lets users create private Virtual Domains
to provide isolation, security, and policy
enforcement across tenants.

VXLAN-BASED OVERLAY NETWORK
Cumulus Linux, the Networking Operating System for Open Networking
With over one million ports in service, Cumulus Networks technology helps organizations of all sizes realize the
promise of the software-defined data center by enabling high-capacity networks that are easy to deploy and
affordable. Many organizations today are limited by complex infrastructure and long feature development cycles on
closed networking platforms.
The open networking ecosystem provides an alternative. Disaggregation of networking hardware and software combined
with a robust ecosystem including PLUMgrid provide automation, accelerated innovation, consistent tools across the data
center, and cost savings spanning both CapEx and OpEx. Cumulus Linux unleashes the power of open networking with
hardware-accelerated Linux networking that supports layer 2, layer 3 and overlay network architectures.
When deployed as the operating system for a hardware gateway (VTEP), Cumulus Linux enables physical workloads
to be seamlessly connected into any overlay solution, extending the reach of the solution.
Integrated Solution
PLUMgrid ONS for OpenStack and Cumulus Linux deliver a best in class solution for OpenStack clouds with integrated support
for wire-rate connectivity for bare metal workloads and seamless configuration via the OpenStack API and dashboard.
PLUMgrid ONS provides cloud users with the ability to create feature-rich, multi-tenant environments (Virtual Domains)
that can be deployed seamlessly without any requirement or configuration changes in the underlying physical network
infrastructure, thanks to the use of overlay technologies.
Cumulus Linux enables the overlay solution to extend to bare metal workloads with support for VXLAN gateways. By
implementing layer 2 hardware VTEP features, Cumulus Linux can terminate a VXLAN tunnel in hardware, thus enabling
both bare metal workloads to be integrated into the overlay solution as well as generic north-south gateway functionality
(interconnecting the cloud with external networks such as the Internet) to be offloaded to hardware.

When deployed in conjunction with PLUMgrid ONS, each Cumulus Linux layer 2 hardware VTEP
automatically registers with the PLUMgrid Director for simplified, single-click configuration.
Once configured, users can then select entities such as physical ports, VLANs, or a combination
of both to become part of a tenant network. PLUMgrid ONS automatically learns the presence
of such entities and handles all broadcast traffic without any requirement for multicast to be
enabled in the fabric while Cumulus Linux automatically handles the termination in hardware of
the VXLAN tunnels.

Challenges Addressed
Software-only consumption models have become more and more predominant in
the cloud world now that the majority of resources such as compute, storage and
network are simpler, faster and on demand. But many cloud solutions need to satisfy
the requirements of existing applications, running on bare metal servers and requiring
hardware-accelerated performance. The reach of overlay networking thus needs to
be extended to satisfy these requirements with integrated support for bare metal
switches and VxLAN termination offloading for the best possible performance.
Conclusion
PLUMgrid and Cumulus Networks deliver increased efficiency and simplified deployment for
large-scale customers. With Cumulus Linux and PLUMgrid Open Networking Suite for OpenStack,
enterprises and service providers have a powerful solution combining breakthrough physical
and virtual networking with security, scalability, and programmability to support any workload,
application, and service.

About Cumulus Networks ®
Cumulus Networks unleashes the power of open networking and accelerates its adoption with Cumulus Linux, the operating system for open
networking. Founded by veteran networking engineers from Cisco and VMware, Cumulus Networks makes the first Linux operating system
for networking hardware and fills a critical gap in realizing the true promise of the software-defined data center. Just as Linux completely
transformed the economics and innovation on the server side of the data center, Cumulus Linux is doing the same for the network. It is
radically reducing the costs and complexities of operating modern data center networks for service providers and businesses of all sizes.
Cumulus Networks has received venture funding from Andreessen Horowitz, Battery Ventures, Sequoia Capital, Peter Wagner and four of the
original VMware founders. For more information visit cumulusnetworks.com or follow @cumulusnetworks.
