Local Baseball Champ
Principals Message
I trust all parents had an opportunity to
meet with teachers and talk about their
child’s progress and any changes that may
need to happen for the rest of the year.
While this is the last formal reporting period
you are always welcome to contact your
child’s teacher if you have any concerns.
E-mail is the most effective way to contact
teachers at CVC.
Our average attendance rates are still at about 90%. While this
may sound good it actually means that on average students
are away one day per fortnight. While many students have a
better attendance rate, many have worse. Unsurprisingly there
is a direct correlation between attendance rates and academic
success. Students, who miss one day a fortnight or, more
likely one day a week, are at risk of failing. Some absences
such as sickness can’t be avoided but others can. Please
try to schedule appointments during the school breaks and
please avoid taking holidays during the term. I understand that
vacations during the term cost less but it does come at the cost
of education of your child. Vacations are not a valid excuse for
absence and the school will not support this.
We are still waiting for the Local Councils of Gosnells and
Canning to build the crosswalk infrastructure across Nicholson
Road near Livingston markets. The crosswalk is approved, it is
now a matter of getting railings and markings in place. I hope
that both councils can fund the project sooner rather than later.
In the meantime, I advise parents to talk to your child about how
to safely navigate busy roads. Some of the behaviour that has
been reported is extremely dangerous. Dumbarton road is still a
pedestrian issue and we are trying to get a crosswalk approved.
I hope that CVC has been a good experience for you and your
family this term. I encourage you to provide us with feedback,
both positive and constructive. Feedback lets us know what we
are doing well and what we need to improve on.
I hope all families enjoy the two week school holiday break.
Congratulations to Year 9 student Luke
Houston who along with his baseball team
mates, the Perth Metro Central Firebirds,
will be representing Western Australia at the
2015 National Championships for baseball
being held in Surfers Paradise in
Queensland over the Easter period. No
stranger to State, National or even World
Championship Competitions, Luke has played for this team
before in 2013 at a Little League level. In 2013, the team won
the State Championship as well as the National Championship,
and then went on to compete in the Little League World Series
which was held in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, USA. This was
the first Australian Little League team to compete in the Little
League World Series in the past 67 years. Well done Luke!
City of Gosnells Art Exhibition
The City of Gosnells Community Art
Exhibition and Awards is an annual exhibit
open to all emerging and professional
artists. The exhibition is a great
opportunity for students to have their
artwork on public display and get
recognition for their hard work and talent
in the Visual Arts. This year some of our
young talented artists have been successful in exhibiting in the
community exhibition. Congratulations to the following

Year 12 student Rachel Law who will be
doing the World’s Greatest Shave on the

This show is literally bigger than Ben Hur ( instead of the
Chariot Race, we have a string quartet!) This is an amazing
show that the students have put together in less than 9 weeks
and showcases their incredible music talent. All songs are by
Australian artists and there are beautiful arrangements to suit
everyone's tastes. There is going to be glitter, chimes and
mirror ball action to boot! However! The kids need your support
- please if you can make it, buy a ticket and relax for a night of
true entertainment.

National Day against Bullying Friday 20th
March - Safety Rail Talk with Jonathan

Ambassador, visited Canning Vale College
this term to chat with our Year 7 and 9
students about risk-taking and the
consequences of choices. Part of a wider
education program and endorsed by the School Curriculum
and Standards Authority (SCSA), this incursion was offered free
of charge and presented through the Right Track education
program. The Right Track program brings Jonathan over to
Perth twice a year to visit lots of schools and youth
organisations and tell his story in the hopes of saving people
from making dangerous choices and ending up a double
amputee like him, or worse. His interesting, funny, and at times
gruesome tale covers things like the difference between a good
friend who tells you not to do crazy things and a bad friend who
might egg you on; how it feels to look like him and have to ask a
girl out; and how his injury has affected his family, friends, and
the people who responded first such as the Train Driver and
Transit Officers.
This talk was organised to coincide with National Day against
Bullying and students were encouraged to Take a Stand
Together to reduce bullying. For more information on what to

The CVC Coffee Club
The CVC Coffee Club is up and running again this year as part
of the Year 12 Certificate II in Hospitality. Our Year 12 hospitality
students have been busy running a coffee shop for all staff
to enjoy freshly made espresso coffee, while gaining practical
experience. Home Economics Teacher, Ms Kasey Harris said,
“the realistic coffee shop allowed students to gain valuable
industry experience with a ‘hands on’ approach in making all
kinds of coffees, teas and hot chocolates, also dealing with
customers and working in a friendly but busy environment”.

The Amazing ASEN Team
CVC is a recognised Department of Education Distinctive
School in the provision of quality education for students with
Autism Spectrum Disorder. Coordinated by Jodie Norwell, the
ASEN team provides a highly individualised curriculum delivered
through the Autism Support Program classes.
Further support for students with a range of special education
needs is provided by up to 20 experienced, Level 3 Special
Needs Education Assistants who work closely with the
classroom teachers across the college. Our Education
Assistants provide teaching and learning adjustments for
students across all subject areas and support students to learn
and demonstrate their knowledge and skills.
Dodge ball Tournament
On the Thursday 5th and Friday 6th March CVC students had
the opportunity to compete in the annual Dodge ball
tournament run by Perth Christian Life Centre (PCLC). The
competition took place at recess and lunch time on both of
these days. Students eagerly put together teams of 6 and
played off against each other in the fight to get through to the
grand final where a $600 prize was up for grabs. Two teams
were successful in making it through to the grand final held
on the Friday night at Firebrand Youth. Unfortunately Southern
River College took home the grand prize.
Congratulations to all CVC students for getting involved and
having some fun and a big thank you to PCLC for running such
a great event.

Yr 7 & Yr 8 Boys & Girls Night In
Yr 7 & Yr 8 Boys Night In
On Wednesday 18th February and Thursday 19th February,
we held two very successful “Boys Night In”. The boys were
kept busy with Inflatable soccer, Sumo Suits, Skateboarding,
DJ Equipment and Basketball. It was a great opportunity for
staff and students to bond outside of school and the staff in
attendance were very impressed by the behaviour of all the
students. A great night was had by all and we have been asked
by many of the boys when we are having another “Night In”
again.
I have returned from Italy and settled into
my current routine of attending Year 12. In
Italy, I improved my Italian and also picked
up one of the dialects, Friulano. I learned
more about the local heritage and culture
and also picked up a few pointers in making typical Italian food.
I have broadened my social circle by making some new friends
and I am amazed that Italians are very affectionate and friendly.
The trip to Italy as an exchange student has been an eye opener
for me. The experience has helped me by not only improving
my language skills and general knowledge, but the most
significant improvement has been becoming more independent
and being able to solve whatever problem that comes up on my
own.

Year 12 Perspectives Excursion
Yr 7 & Yr 8 Girls Night In
On Wednesday 25th February and Thursday 26th February, we
were once again kept busy, this time with the Girls Night In. The
girls had fun with Sumo Suits, a Photo booth, DJ Equipment;
Sing Star, Henna Art, Face Painting and Hair and Beauty. We
were entertained by some very talented young ladies on both
nights who were very keen to show off their singing and acting
skills. A good laugh was had by all and staff and students alike
had a great night!

Italian Exchange Trip 2014-2015
My experience going on exchange to Italy
can be summed up as two of the best
months of my life. Being able to
experience the Italian language and
culture first hand really helped develop my
Italian. My host family were very wonderful; they treated me as a
part of their family so I wasn’t constantly homesick. I met so
many amazing people, learned so much and got to see places
like the mountains and Venice that I thought I would never get
to see. I would highly recommend the 2-month exchange trip
for anyone who loves Italian, it helps you learn so much being
Year 12 Perspectives is an exhibition of the best, brightest and
most talented graduating high school artists in the State. This
exhibition is always delightful to attend, to have an insight of
the current talent and creative thinking of our young artists. Our
current Year 12 Stage 3 Visual Art students and our Year 11
Stage 2 students attended the exhibition to inform and inspire
their own art making practice. Students were in astonishment
of the detailed paintings, and challenged by the interesting
installations on display. Students felt eager to try new ideas in
their own artworks, so look out for their creations coming to
life in the CVC Gallery. Perhaps our Year 12 work will be in
Perspectives next year…

Year 12 Ball
The Year 12s truly had a great time on Friday 6th March at the
Year 12 Ball held at Fremantle Esplanade Hotel. The Boys all
looked very dapper and smart, and the girls all looked stunning.
Belle of the Ball was presented to Nicola John and Blake
Johnson was crowned Beau of the Ball.
There were some other special awards too, Teal Bowden won
the 'Best Hairdo' award, Jamie Butcher was the most uniquely
dressed, and Dermott Barnard got the dance floor award,
although Rifqi and Joseph gave us all a very special moment
to remember!! The dance floor rocked, stomped, jiggered, and
grooved all night long!
The staff really enjoyed sharing the evening with the students
and felt very proud of how wonderful they looked, how well they

behaved and what wonderful young adults they have grown
into. It was a very special night enjoyed by students and staff
equally.
Bully Busters
On Friday 20th February, Class Act
Theatre visited our school to perform their
popular Bully Busters play. The play
explored all facets of bullying, including:

• Peer Pressure

• Racism
• Judging Others
• Tolerance
• Family Problems
• Electronic forms of bullying
• Resilience
The show was a huge success and the students that attended
the performance enjoyed it and hopefully walked away learning
something new about how bullying makes people feel.
