ABOUT THE WORKSHOP
ABOUT THE FACULTY
It is estimated that between 1 and 4 million Americans over the
age of 60 are lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender (LGBT). It
has been well documented that the number of older Americans
will increase and that by 2030 one in five Americans will be 65
or older. This means an increasing number of LGBT individuals
will be among the older population as they are estimated to
comprise 2-3% of the general aged population. LGBT older
adults have many of the same health concerns that straight older adults have but they also have unique issues and concerns
that can complicate their ability to receive health and mental
health treatment and have positive health outcomes.
Paige Averett, MSW, PhD, is an Associate Professor of Social
Work at East Carolina University. Her main research focus is on
LGBT issues. Specifically she has published numerous articles
and chapters, as well as presented nationally, statewide, and
locally on topics related to LGBT aging and health. She currently has the largest existing study on older lesbians in the United
States and is a known expert on the present generation of LGBT
elders.
This workshop will enable the participant to increase their
knowledge of the unique health and social disparities of older
lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender adults. The content will
explore the health issues and disparities in older LGBT adults,
the biopsychosocial needs of LGBT individuals as they age, and
the legal and ethical issues that LGBT individuals face in the
health care system. Through the use of case studies and small
group discussion, participants will apply knowledge learned
specific to their role on the interprofessional team.
OBJECTIVES
Upon completion of this workshop, participants will be able to:
 Identify LGBT health issues and health disparities
 Describe 3 biopsychosocial needs specific to aging in gay,
lesbian and transgender individuals
 Discuss legal and ethical issues that LGBT individuals face
in the health care system
 Discuss LGBT health disparities relative to the knowledge
and expertise of interprofessional team members
TARGET AUDIENCE
This workshop will benefit those who work with older lesbian,
gay, bisexual, or transgender individuals including registered
nurses, nurse practitioners, social workers, psychologists, counselors, marriage and family therapists, nursing home administrators, substance abuse professionals, those working in senior
care facilities, agencies that focus on aging, and all interested
others.
PROGRAM LOCATION
This program is being held at the Edwin W. Monroe AHEC Conference Center (adjacent to the Eastern AHEC Office BuildingVenture Tower) located on Venture Tower Drive in Greenville,
NC. Parking is available in the lots marked Monroe Conference
Center Parking Only (two rows in front of the building and in
the lot located to the right of the building).

Mineko Holloway, BA, is the Executive Director of the Lenoir
County Council on Aging, a non-profit agency providing aging
services out of Kinston, NC. She has worked in the Aging Services Network since 2004, providing services such as older
worker assistance, caregiver support, respite care, public education, regional program management, and service monitoring.
She has been a board member of the NC Association on Aging
since 2007. Ms. Holloway is currently a graduate student in the
East Carolina University School of Social Work.
Kelley Reinsmith-Jones, PhD, is an Assistant Professor at East
Carolina University in the School of Social Work. She received
her Master of Social Work from Eastern Washington University,
and her Doctorate of Leadership Studies from Gonzaga University in Spokane, Washington. She has been the recipient of four
East Carolina University BB&T Leadership Enhancement grant
awards that allowed her to develop and teach leadership classes to undergraduates. She worked within the field of social
services more than 20 years. She has held positions in a variety
of specialty areas such as juvenile justice, substance abuse and
addictions treatment management, school-based social services
design and delivery, gerontology service planning, mental
health administration, mental health residential services development and evaluation, and managed care.
Justin Smith, BA, is a second-degree seeking student in the Accelerated Bachelors of Science Nursing program at East Carolina
University. His first degree is in psychology, with a background
in clinical health psychology and clinical-community social
work. He currently serves as a student representative on ECU’s
Health Science’s LGBT Workgroup committee, ECU’s college of
nursing research committee, and as an officer in the Multicultural Student Nurses Association.

Category A-NC Psychology Credit: This program will provide
5.25 hours of (Category A) continuing education for North Carolina psychologists. No partial credit will be given.
Contact Hours: Certificates reflecting 5.25 contact hours of education will be awarded at the completion of the program.
National Board for Certified Counselors (NBCC): Eastern AHEC
is an NBCC-Approved Continuing Education Provider
(ACEP TM) and may offer NBCC-approved clock hours
for events that meet NBCC requirements. The ACEP
solely is responsible for all aspects of the program.

Eastern AHEC Department of Nursing and Allied Health Education is an approved provider of continuing nursing education by
the North Carolina Nurses Association, an accredited approver

Attendance of the entire program is required before credit is
awarded. Participation will be verified by check-in at the start
of the program and initial-out at the conclusion of the program. Certificates will be awarded after the participant completes the evaluation.
NC State Board of Examiners for Nursing Home
Administrators Credit (NHA): Application has been made to
the NC Board of Examiners for Nursing Home Administrators for
5.25 contact hours of continuing education.
Substance Abuse Counselor Certification (SAC): Application
has been made to the North Carolina Substance Abuse Professional Practice Board for 5.25 hours of Substance Abuse General
Skill Building hours.
