Mayor Don Iveson to turn on Solar System at - Eco
For Immediate Release
May 29 Ribbon Cutting
Mayor Don Iveson to turn on Solar System at
groundbreaking Net Zero Energy Project.
May 21, 2015 – Edmonton, Alberta. On May 29th Mayor Don Iveson will fire up the solar power system at a new
milestone in net zero energy housing. The McKernan Net Zero Energy (NZE) home is a state-of-the-art
demonstration of practical and proven technology that is making NZE housing accessible to a broad market.
Mayor Iveson will use the occasion to promote the Eco Solar Home Tour. The projects on the tour are key examples
of the kinds of buildings prescribed by Edmonton’s recently adopted Energy Transition Strategy. The McKernan
NZE home and other NZE and high performance homes and buildings will be open to Edmontonians on May 30 and
31. (http://www.ecosolar.ca/)
There are now almost forty NZE buildings in the Edmonton area. With continuous refinement and the decline in the
cost of solar panels, the extra cost to get to NZE has been cut in half. NZE housing is fast becoming the most
economical housing you can build. Along the way a new generation of housing has emerged; houses that live better,
work better and last better. They are healthier, more comfortable, more durable, and much cheaper to operate. The
fact that you can look your kids in the eye knowing you have done what you can for the planet isn’t bad either.
Bard Golightly, past president of the Canadian Home Builders’ Association (CHBA) will present the homeowners
with verification from National Resources Canada that the house has been designed and built to meet the new NZE
standard. Through its Net Zero Energy Housing Council, the CHBA is leading the way to this new generation of
housing. The Council is connecting member builders with Canada’s best building science professionals, working on
the marketing and financing of NZE homes and helping develop third party standards to ensure that homeowners get
the full benefit of tomorrow’s housing, today.
In addition to being able to get comments from Mayor Iveson, and Bard Golightly of the CHBA, it will be possible
to get perspectives from Peter Amerongen of Habitat Studio and the homeowners, designers, and builders of several
of the projects featured in the Eco Solar Home Tour. Being a Friday afternoon, there will also be the opportunity to
enjoy some light refreshments while conversing with Edmonton’s most forward thinking home building
professionals.
