ANNUAL MEDIA CONVENTION 2015
CONCEPT NOTE
Theme: Media, ICTs and Development: The New Era of Productivity and
Transformation of Journalism and Communication.
INTRODUCTION
The Department of Journalism and Communication at Makerere University,
Kampala will host a two-day Annual Media Convention scheduled for 29th-30th
April 2015 at Makerere University Main Hall. The Department’s Annual Media
Conventions are aimed at discussing contemporary issues in media, journalism
and communication in Uganda and, to some extent, the East African region.
TARGET AUDIENCE
The convention is expected to attract practitioners, policymakers, and scholars
in media, journalism and communication in the East African region, as well as
institutions, civil society organizations, government regulatory bodies and
corporates that are actively engaged in this field. The convention shall provide
an opportunity for participants to share experience and lessons for improving
and advancing the media, journalism and communication in Uganda, with a
focus on new media and ICTs.
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE OF THE CONVENTION
The ICT and new media revolution has brought about significant progress in the
media,
business,
education,
governance,
health,
banking
and
telecommunication sectors, among others. This progress has registered
numerous positive outcomes, but has also had several challenges.
The purpose of the conference, therefore, is to provide a platform for the various
stakeholders to share knowledge, experience and lessons with regard to
harnessing new media and ICTs in journalism and communication.
The convention also seeks to discuss ways of embracing the opportunities that
new media and ICTs present for journalism and communication practice in the
region, with a view of strengthening this sector and making it more relevant to
society. Furthermore, the convention shall provide a forum for networking
among participants.
