Program Overview
Statins provide proven cardiovascular benefit in broad patient categories. Yet, even with guideline-mandated statin
management, substantial residual risk remains for many dyslipidemic patients. Fibrates, nicotinic acids, OM3s,
cholesterol absorption inhibitors? What is the biologic plausibility of each class for cardiovascular benefit? What
is the clinical evidence? Are there agents of choice for particular forms of dyslipidemia? How much might severity
of dyslipidemia or co-morbidities such as CAD, diabetes, or obesity factor into decision-making? This engaging
educational activity will provide a rigorous review of these questions with an emphasis on offering expert practical
commentary for clinicians who treat patients at high risk for CV events.
Target Audience
Physicians, NPs/PAs, pharmacists, RNs, Advance Practice Registered Nurses, and
registered dietitians with an interest in lipid management and CV disease risk reduction
Learning Objectives
After completing this activity, the participant should be better able to:
• Relate the key biologic pathways responsible for atherosclerotic disease and the
mechanisms of therapies that inhibit its development
• Discuss the current clinical trial evidence of therapies that have been used as add-on
therapy to statins to reduce CV events
• Incorporate risk assessment, guideline recommendations, and patient-centered
approaches for add-on therapeutic decision-making for patients at high risk for CV events
• For Registered Nurses and Nurse Practitioners only:
– Provide appropriate care and counsel for patients and their families
