1.Introduction
This handbook is a guide to the NQT Programme at Excelsior Academy.
Excelsior Academy is the first all through 4-18 Academy in the North East of England; we are
sponsored by Irving Laidlaw and opened in September 2008.
The unique structure consists of three 11-16 schools, one post 16 College and our very own Primary;
Rainbird which opened in 2013 which has Reception, Years 1&2.
Our last Ofsted in February 2013 Excelsior was graded as Good.
The NQT Programme will ensure all aspects of the teaching profession are addressed and training
given; all CPD is based on the Teaching Standards and is driven by these standards.
Every Friday evening the newsletter; ITTimes is published. This is written by the ITT Co-ordinator;
there will be opportunities for NQTs to contribute.
Formal observations will take place half termly and these will be in addition to School based
performance management observations. There is the opportunity for informal observations and for
NQTs to observe each other as well as specialists Academy-wide; there is an additional 10% noncontact per week and this should be used to observe colleagues or the enhancement of professional
development.

2. NQT Programme
Excelsior will provide both generic & bespoke CPD to all NQTs. This will take the form of weekly
mentor meetings with NQT Tutor and fortnightly NQT&L meetings with ITT Co-ordinator on
Tuesdays from 4.00-5.00.
Excelsior’s NQT programme is accredited by nipt; National Panel for the Induction of Teachers.
Both NQT Tutors and NQTs will be given all the procedures, expectations and paperwork in
September. Support is available from both ITT Co-ordinator and nipt.
All NQTs are expected to keep a record of all evidence of each Teaching Standard over the
assessment period and this will be referred to at the weekly mentor meetings. Proformas for lesson

At the end of each term the NQT Mentor will write a formal report which is based on lesson
observations and NQT Development Plan and is driven by the Teaching Standards. The NQT will have
an opportunity to contribute to this report.
To address TS8 all NQTs will present a T&L resource through the bi-annual ITTeachMeet in
December 2014 and June 2015.

3. NQT Personal and Professional
Conduct Policy
In line with Part 2 of the Teaching Standards NQTs are expected to maintain high standards of ethics
and behaviour at all times. This includes social networking sites; the recommendation is that the
security for personal sites is increased to maximum and each NQT reviews previous posts in line with
the professional standards.
All NQTs are expected to wear business dress with male colleagues wearing a shirt, tie and jacket.
No tattoos are to be visible and the only one pair of earrings to be worn.
Excelsior ID Cards are to be worn in full view at all times.

4. NQT Behaviour Management
Policy
All incidents of misbehaviour are to be issued a verbal warning followed by a cross (X) with the
initials of the child placed on the board
Three crosses will result in a detention given by teacher and this must be logged on ePortal and an e
mail forwarded to both Behaviour Manager and ITT Co-ordinator. The Behaviour Manager will
collect the child and the trainee will collect from room/office and complete the detention.
Under no circumstances can the crosses be removed for good behaviour or earned back. This is to
eradicate any confusion with either the learners or the NQT.
Role of the Behaviour Manager
Provide information about pupils and strategies to improve behaviour, to support with detentions.
To observe lessons alongside the ITT Co-ordinator and provide CPD on behaviour management
techniques
Ensure all ePortal incidents are logged and followed up appropriately
Role of the NQT
To plan all lessons thoroughly ensuring the individual needs of all learners are catered for TS4&5
To plan & implement appropriate intervention strategies TS4&5
To log all incidents on ePortal & follow Excelsior NQT Behaviour Policy TS7
Role of ITT Co-ordinator
To ensure CPD is delivered at an appropriate time and provide added support should it be required,
to provide support and liaise with appropriate colleagues, to monitor support and paperwork
Behaviour Folder
All NQTs to create a Behaviour Folder which will include the following

Records of negative behaviour incidents/detentions etc. TS 5&7

Profroma for letters home and copies of any communication with
parents/guardians. TS8

4. NQT Absence Policy
All NQTs must inform their NQT Tutor and school cover supervisor before 8.00am of the first day of
absence via e mail. All cover work must also be sent at this time.
The NQT must then inform the NQT Tutor and school cover supervisor by 4.00pm each day until
either the NQT returns to school or provides a sick note.
Should the NQT need any support throughout any part of the assessment period this is available
from ITT Co-ordinator and nipt.
