best Mom in the world. But
she got sick and died. I miss
her so much. Lucky for me
the Fannin County Animal
Control team found me, but
they do not have a place for
kitty cats so they called the
Humane Society of Blue
Ridge. Now I am living at
the Humane Society’s Cat
Haven and have made new
friends. I still miss my Mom,

Gardening class
focuses on success

Feed Fannin’s class on
Saturday was a two-pronged
approach
to
successful gardening. Raised Bed
Gardening presented by Walt
George, soil consultant and
designer/builder of raised
bed gardens, taught the class
how to construct a raised
bed.
Raised bed gardening
allows you to control the
quality of the soil, providing
the perfect balance of nutrients, density and drainage.
Good old Georgia clay lacks
all of those elements, making raised bed gardening the
choice among home gardeners. George even provided a
raised bed soil recipe.
One of the best benefits to
raised bed gardening is the
early warming of the plot.
Elevating the soil above the
ground lets the sun warm the
soil so you can plant earlier.

ing compost piles, presented
“Composting.” If you want
to go organic or natural in
feeding your plants, compost
is the way to go.
Compost pile are a great
way to recycle plant based
waste. For example: peeling
potatoes results in a pile of
skin that normally goes into
the garbage disposal or the
trash. Dumping them into
the compost pile is so much
better. Mother Nature goes
to work breaking the potato
skins down and in several
months you are rewarded
with crumbly, nutrient-rich
compost that your plants will
love.
Feed Fannin does a great
service for the community
with classes like this. Those
who are unfamiliar with gardening are armed with the
knowledge to get out there
and grow their own vegetables.
