I was hungry and you formed a humanities club and you discussed my hunger. Thank you.
I was imprisoned and you crept off quietly to your chapel in the cellar to pray for my release.
I was naked and in your mind you debated the morality of my appearance.
I was sick and you knelt and thanked God for your health.
I was homeless and you preached to me of the spiritual shelter of the love of God.
I was lonely and you left me alone to pray for me. You seem so holy; so close to God.
But I'm still very hungry and lonely and cold. So where have your prayers gone?
What have they done? What does it profit a man to page through his book of prayers when
the rest of the world is CRYING for HELP?
Please SUPPORT your local mission or someone in NEED.

4-H News
Rinker 4-H Club
Briana Becker,
Rinker 4-H Club Reporter
The May meeting of
Rinker 4-H was held at
Jack’s Shack. Wyatt Bolen
called the meeting to
order and the Flag Salute
and 4-H Pledge was lead
by Jacob Wheeler. For
roll call members responded to the questions,
“What is your favorite
smell?” There were six
members, two leaders,
and four parents present.
The minutes were read by
Isaac Cushenbery. Annette Karjala announced that on May
26 there is going to be a
dog meeting. The Ikerd family is working
on setting up the club
exchange meeting. 4-H
Discovery Days will be
on May 26-29 at Kansas
State University. We were
provided with several
other upcoming events
and dates.
Jacob Wheeler led
the club in a repeat after
me song, “Boom Chicka
Boom.” It was suggested
that we use the Tupperware Fundraiser proceeds
for the Rinker anniversary party and meeting.
Also we would like to
prepare a 4-H banner for
the fair competition.
Since we did not have
enough members present to vote, the club will
vote in June on the 4-H
banner participation and
about making a donation to support the Lyon
County BB-Gun team
going to the National
Competition in Arkansas. Kaitlyn Karjala is on
the team and Karalyn
Karjala is attending as an
alternate.
Our next meeting
will be held on Monday,
June 15, 5:30 p.m., at
Pizza Ranch. We will
first discuss and work
on officer books and
review previous banners
to form ideas for the fair
entry. Then we will have
a meeting afterwards.
Members and families
are to e-mail their project
pictures in advance of the
June meeting to our club
leader, Theresa McFarland, and bring copies of
anything they would like
in our Historian Book.
She will give this to the
Simons family to prepare.
Members and families are
asked to RSVP to Theresa
for a total to make the
restaurant reservation.
Jacob Wheeler gave a
talk about Go-Carting.
There were no May birthdays to celebrate. Briana
Becker made a motion
to adjourn the meeting and Karalyn Karjala
seconded.
THE PIANOS ARE HERE!
Emporia’s annual
Pianos on the Pavement
project is running now
through Sunday June 14.
The event sponsor Emporia Celebrates the Flint
Hills is featuring twelve
decorated pianos on the
sidewalks of Commercial
Street downtown.
This event is planned
to coincide with other
events such as Emporia’s
Dirty Kanza bike race
(May 30), the Flint Hills
Rodeo in Strong City
(June 4-6) and the Symphony in the Flint Hills at
nearby Tallgrass Prairie
Preserve (June 13).
Pianos on the Pavement was originally
conceived as a downtown
attraction for residents
and visitors alike, but the
pianos are meant to be
played as well as viewed.
The public, children and
adults, are encouraged to
“tickle the ivories.”
Emporia Celebrates
the Flint Hills is a volunteer committee (the
“Celebration Committee”) which works with
Emporia Main Street and
Emporia’s Convention
and Visitors Bureau to
plan activities and events
that attract the public’s
attention. Emphasis is on
the city’s important link
to the Flint Hills.
Stormy weather forecasts have complicated
the 2015 piano event,
forcing the pianos to
be covered at different
times. The public is encouraged to cover pianos
if rain begins downtown.
A tarp and rope is provided at each piano.
For more information,
contact George or Gail
Milton, (620) 342-8806.

OLD NEWS IS
FUN NEWS
Provided by the North Lyon County Historical Society and Museum at Admire, Kansas
NORTHERN LYON COUNTY JOURNAL (AT ALLEN, RIVAL OF THE ADMIRE NEWS), JUNE 5,
1903
The Reading Recorder questions, “We fail to
understand why the Admire News is not whooping it up for the proposed incorporation of that
town. All local papers are supposed to be for
anything that will benefit the town or community.” That’s easily explained. In the first place,
the News man hasn’t any nerve – he is afraid he
will offend somebody. In the second place, his
sheet has no influence – is always on the fence
– causing the people to have but very little confidence in the editor or his paper so far as public
affairs are concerned. In the third place, the
News is evidently muzzled by the “High Lord
Executioners” of that town, who are blocking
every effort of the people to incorporate, yet the
News fails to “Throw Out the Life Line,” and
assist to “Rescue the Perishing,” which are sure
follow in the wake of a city with no government, no law and no order, particularly when a
majority of the people demand it.
There is urgent need of a bridge across Duck
Creek at the Appleby Ford. This is a bad ford
at best and in times of high waters is impassable. Saturday, Will Cowden, carrier on route 1,
could not make the ford and turned back north
to the east and west road, and on that first mile
east the approach of a small bridge was washed
out on the opposite side from the side on which
Will drove. The opening was about two feet and
the horses got into it and into a general mixup
in which his team was crippled some, but not
seriously.

PRAIRIE PASTTIMES FEATURES
TWO ARTISTS ON SYMPHONY DAY
Two artists with rich
backgrounds in their art
will be demonstrating
their craft on June 13.
They
are guest artist Bryan
Grove from Council
Grove and member artist
David Edwards from
Emporia.
Bryan Grove uses
quilting and fiber collage
techniques to represent
the very heart and life of
the prairie
and nature. He
meshes fabric and surface design elements to
create multidimensional
pictures .
His creative fiber
statements focus on
impressions and images
of his youth and on the
historic
relationships that we
have with the land on
which we live. His art is
a creative blend of earth
tone
fabrics and images that tell the story of
those relationships.

Tablets of Honor
Campaign Announced
Fundraising campaign for All Veterans
Memorial addition
receives matching funds
commitment from the
City of Emporia, founding city of Veterans Day
The All Veterans
Memorial Association
is pleased to announce
the launch of the Tablets of Honor initiative,
raising for an addition
to the All Veterans
Memorial, located in
Emporia, Kansas.
The Tablets of Honor
projects honors veterans of all wars with
unit/organizational
plaques and individual
military nameplates
engraved and placed on
the new All Veterans
Honor Tablet Walls.
The cost of the Tablets of Honor project is
estimated at $180,000,
which includes construction of the All
Veterans Honor Tablet
Walls as well as needed
repairs to the All Veterans Memorial. The City
of Emporia recently
voted to match funds
raised for the Tablets
of Honor project up to
$90,000.
“The city of Emporia has retained park
funds for several years
to upgrade valued and
important parts of our
community. The All
Veterans Memorial
Tablet of Honor project
is a perfect match. We
look forward to seeing
the project completed
and know the community will appreciate
the improvements and
opportunity to recognize local Veterans and
units.”
The campaign tablets, containing up to
80 names each, recognize a service member
by rank, name and
branch as well as up to
eight unit/organization
plaques per wall. Upon
completion of the tablet
of honor campaign,
plaques recognizing
units and organizations
will be moved from the
walkways to the Tablet
of Honor Walls.
“As the founding city
of Veterans Day, we
think it is appropriate
to provide opportunities for people to show
their love and respect
for their beloved veterans and this project will
allow that to happen,”
said Frank Lowery,
President of the All
Veterans Memorial Association.
unknown to grow new
skills.
David will be in the
alley next to Prairie PastTimes at 9 a.m. It will be
an old time demonstration
with coal forge, hammer and anvil work. He
will demonstrate common traditional techniques.
Both artists are inspirational in their skill,
dedication, and passion
they have for their art as
well as
fascinating to watch.
There work is on display
and for sale at Prairie
PastTimes.
We will also have face
painting and food in the
courtyard. Hours for
that day will be 9 a.m. to

Lyon County Historical Facts
Provided by Lyon County Historical Society
When Mr. and Mrs. Ambrose got to Wyoming
in 1910, it was so cold they couldn’t do much, way
down around zero. They just piled their furniture in
a shale bed and waited for the weather to abate. No
one ever harmed their possessions, even the piano
right out there in the open on a hill. The moisture
didn’t even damage it while they were building
their house. Actually, they built their barn first and
lived in it until they built their house.
The Tablets of Honor
fundraising campaign
runs from Memorial
Day through Veterans
Day 2015. Dedication
of the All Veterans
Honor Tablet Walls is
targeted for Memorial
Day 2016.
For more information, visit allveteransday.org or contact
Frank Lowery at (620)

Mr. and Mrs. J.L. Ambrose of Hartford told
about the dances they played for in Wyoming while
they were homesteading there. Jack played the
saxaphone, and Mrs. Ambrose played piano. During political years, politicians paid them for playing
as long as they would, usually until midnight, but
sometimes they were paid double for going past
midnight. One winter night a huge blizzard came
up so that they couldn’t get home. After staying in a
hotel for the night, they tried to get home the next
day, but they couldn’t even see the horses’ heads
ahead of them. Jack’s eyebrows froze so he could
hardly see. They drove over the tops of fences on
their way home, and finally they just turned the
horses/ mules loose. Those animals found their way
home, stopping at the gate for Jack to open it.

TREASURES
From PAGE 12
riod, Weller introduced
a line of wares known
as "Brighton," and this
kingfisher flower frog is a
member of that extensive
grouping.
The term "flower frog"
means the piece was
FLINT HILLS SHOPPER
designed to sit in the
middle of a bowl that
would hold water and be
used as an aid to flower
arranging. The stems of
flowers could be inserted
into the small holes in
the base of the piece and
worked into a (hopefully)
attractive design.
The Brighton group
consisted of such things
as representations of peacocks, bluebirds, ducks,
parrots, canaries, butterflies, what looks like
a bird of paradise to us
and a rare dodo bird. The
figures were covered with
bright, high gloss glazes
that generally differed at
least slightly from piece
to piece.
The Brighton figure of
a kingfisher is one of the
more common of Weller's
Brighton features, and
this particular bird is an
image that can be found
decorating other Weller
lines as well. Prior to
2008, this Weller kingfisher flower frog was
somewhat more valuable
than it is today, and for
insurance purposes, P. B.

should value this perfect
example in the range of
$300 to $500. The real
value, however, is in the
family sentiment, not in
the dollars.

Auctioneers Note: The first sellers are moving and selling what
they can't take with them. The second sellers have a lot of nice
collectibles and a lot of them are antiques. They took their own
pictures and when we uploaded them, there was a problem. Most
are ok, but some don't show. I can't tell from all the pictures what
the items are, so I have attempted to do my best to compile this
list. You will definitely want to take a look at the pictures on our
website. I am sure there are some things I missed or didn't quite
get the right description of. Nice quality items over all! You won't
want to miss this!
