Thisisthe8thAnnualSummerStudiosponsoredbyFireArtsInc.Thissummer
experienceisavailabletohighschoolstudents
whowillbeJuniorsorSeniorsinthecomingschoolyear(2015/16).2015
graduatesarealsoeligible.
SummerStudioismentoredbyYvonneDesrosiers,aFireArts
foundingpotterandsculptor.Alongwithbeingapracticingartist
foroverfourdecades,shehadtaughthighschoolartfor35years.
Yvonnestillremembers,asahighschoolstudent,theagonyof
havingtoleavethehighschoolstudioduringsummerbreak.Itis
herdesiretogivetalentedanddrivenart
studentstheopportunitytowork
independentlywithintheguidingshadowof
theFireArts’professionalartists.
SummerStudioformallymeetseach
WednesdayandFridayafternoonfrom
12:00‐2:00pm,beginningJune17thuntil
August12th.Additionalopenstudiotime
willbeavailableimmediatelyaftereach
sessionuntil4:00pm,aswellason
TuesdayandThursdayfrom12:00‐5:00pmandSaturdays
from12:00to4:00pm.IfyoumustmissaWednesdayorFridayclass,youareexpectedtomakeupthe
timeduringtheseopenstudiotimes.Wehavepotter’swheels,kilns,aclayextruder,slabrollerand
workingspacesthatfacilitatepotteryandsculptureproduction.Inthepast,wehaveoccasionallyoffered
theopportunitytodoasmallbronzecasting.Iftheopportunitypresentsitself,additionalfeeswillbe
requiredtomakeasmallbronzesculpture.
FireArtsInc.isa401c3federalnon‐profitwhosemissionincludesprovidingeducationalopportunitiesbaseduponthethree‐dimensionalartsforpeopleof
theMichianaarea.FireArtswasestablishedoversixyearsago.Ourbuildingwasontherosterfordemolitionbythecity.Wereachedanagreementwiththe
citytorehabilitatethebuildingandformastudiospaceandnon‐profit.Inthepastnineyears,wehavesteadilyimprovedourbuilding,equipmentand
offerings.Wehavebecomeahubforartisticactivitiesandhaveproudlytakenownershipoftheproperty.Thecombinedhelpofourmemberartists,public
donations,thecityofSouthBend,localentrepreneurDavidMatthewsandvariousgrantshavehelpedusgetthisfar.WearelocatedontheEastSideoftheSt.

SummerStudiowillformallymeeteachWednesdayandFridayfrom12:00pmto2:00pm.Thefirstday
ofSummerStudioisJune17thandthelastdayisAugust12th.Thereare16formalsessionswherethe
mentorwillbepresent.Participantsareencouragedtotakeadvantageoftheopportunitytoworkforan
extratwohoursdirectlyaftertheformal12‐2pmtimeand/orduringtheotheropenstudiotimeson
Tuesdays,ThursdaysandSaturdaysfrom12:00to4:00pm.Yourmentormayormaynotbepresent
duringtheextratimesbuttherearealwaysknowledgeableFireArts’artistsonthescene.Thisextra
workingtimehasbeeninstrumentalingivingtheparticipantthetimetofullyexplorenewideasorto
simplymakesuretheAugustshowdeadlineismet.

Eachparticipantwillbeexpectedtofinisheitherallorrepresentativesampleoftheirbestworkintime
fortheAugustshow.Thisexhibitwillhaveaformalopeningwithareception.Thedateforthisopeningis
tentativelysetforSaturdayAugust15that2:00pm.Youwillbeencouragedtoinvitefamily,friendsand
yourhighschoolteachertoattendandcelebrateyouraccomplishments.Typicallyartistsbringappetizers
andtreatstosharewiththepublicduringthereception.Youwillbeabletosellyourworkonthesame
termsasFireArtsmemberartists.Artistsreceive80%ofthepurchasepriceandFireArtsreceives20%.
Itisyourresponsibilitytopickupyourworkattheconclusionoftheshow.Oncetheshowhasclosed,if
yourworkisleftforovertwomonths,itwillbeconsideredabandonedandthereforeisrelinquishedto
FireArtsInc.todisposeaccordingly.
Whenworkinginthestudioyouwillbeexpectedtofollowrespectfulprotocols.Itisimperativethat,
aftereachworkingsessionyouwillneedtothoroughlycleanupyourworkingarea,storeyourwork
properlyandputawayallmaterialsandtools.Itgoeswithoutsayingthatyouareexpectedtomaintaina
respectfuldispositionthathelpsfosteranexcellentstudioenvironmentforallinvolved.Yourfocus
shouldbeuponbeingcreativeandintrinsicallydriven.Thisopportunityallowsyoutodangleyourfeetin
thewatersofbeingaprofessionalartist.Pleaserespectthefactthatyouaresharingastudiowith
professionalartists.StudentswhosuccessfullycompletetheSummerStudioexperienceandwho
demonstrateoverallmaturitywillbequalifiedtocontinueusageofthestudioatthesamerentalratesof
