In April 2015, Remontowa Shipbuilding, member of Remontowa Holding capital group, saw launching of
two hulls of arctic supply vessels under construction for Royal Arctic Line. On April 22, the yard no. B 203/2
with a capacity of 108 TEU was launched, while on April 30 - the newbuilding B 202/2, to be capable of
carrying 36 TEU, touched the water.
The launch ceremony of April 22 was a celebratory event, attended by representatives of the Owners - RAL,
Remontowa Shipbuilding yard, mother-company Remontowa Holding, numerous members of the media from
Poland and abroad and hundreds of shipyard employees. The delegation from Denmark, counting several
honourable guests, was led by Jens Andersen, CEO, Royal Arctic Line A/S. The other April launching was a
„technical” event without festivities, just a milestone in production schedule.

Let us recall October 2013, when the contract was sealed for the construction of five ice-classed container
and supply ships in three various sizes and designs, destined for Greenland’s Royal Arctic Line (RAL). The
ships launched in April represent the smallest and middle-size classes of these three designs contracted.
What all the ships will have in common is that they will comply with requirements of the newest high ice
class PC5 and PC6 (Polar Class), featuring strengthened hull structure and safe operations down to 35 deg
Celsius below zero.
According to the contract, Remontowa Shipbuilding SA is to build one 606 TEU vessel for RAL’s international
services, as well as two approximately 100 TEU ships and two 30/36 TEU ships for the carrier’s Greenland
coastal routes.
The 606 TEU unit will be basically a slightly modified sister to Mary Arctica, delivered by REMONTOWA
Holding back in 2005 (the ship was then awarded with „Significant Ship of the Year” title by Royal Institution
of Naval Architects), highly valued by the Owners, and is about to replace the 1984-built Arina Arctica.
The ship will be deployed in Atlantic route, as a feeder ship for Greenland (connecting mainly Aalborg and
Greenland’s Nuuk in regular service), and - similarly to its predecessor Arina and sister Mary - will be used
for special tasks such as East Coast, US Thule Air Base and Antarctica research bases supply.
Two medium-size ships within RAL - Remontowa contract scope will feature 108 TEU capacity each. The
ships will replace Pajuttaat and an annually chartered vessel and will mainly engage in the supply of North
Greenland. The first of the two ships of this design (yard no. B 203/1) was launched on November 25, 2014.
The two smallest ships, featuring 36 TEU capacity each and some passenger capacity, are destined to replace
the old „village vessels” and will be busy in the settlements supply year round. The first of these smallest
ships (yard no. B 202/1) was the one launched on February 20, 2015.
In fact all the five ships are kind of a crossover between supply ships, geared containerships and icebreakers.
They will have to meet the demands of harsh climate conditions including temperatures falling to as low as
minus 40 degrees C.
The new arctic supply container-ships (of RMDC 2880 ACV 36 TEU design) have been designed at Remontowa
Marine Design & Consulting, member of Remontowa Holding.
The Nuuk-headquartered (capital city of Greenland) Royal Arctic Line was founded in 1993 and is fullyowned by the Greenland Home Rule Government. The government controlled transport contracts provide
stable and quality logistics and supply services for all Greenland ports, even the small, remote settlements.
RAL operates a regular ocean service between ports of Aalborg in Denmark, Reykjavík in Iceland and Nuuk,
Aasiaat and Sisimiut in Greenland.

The construction of second Canadian ferry commenced

2 On Friday, April 10, 2015, the construction of the
second of three ferries contracted by BC Ferries, the
largest North American ferry operator, took place at
Remontowa Shipbuilding, belonging to Remontowa
Holding capital group.
The humble celebration of first steel cutting for the
newbuilding yard no. B 615/2, was attended by
Daniel Riis - project manager and Sergiy Vazyansky
as well as Zbigniew Ćwikliński representing BCF
and by the representatives of the Yard’s management.
Daniel Riis was the one to start the plasma steel plate
cutting machine with a push of a button.
This is the second of the sister car and passenger
ferries being built for BC Ferries. On March 6, 2015,
the keel was laid for the first unit in a series of three
(covered in one of the previous issues of the Forum
Okrętowe Newsletter), for which the first steel was
cut on January 16.

The ferries are being built according to the contract, signed in 2014, covering the design (RMDC 2990 Double
Ended Ferry 145 AEQ, from Remontowa Marine Design & Consulting, member of Remontowa Holding),
construction, outfitting, sea trials programme and turn-key delivery at home port Victoria in Canada.
The ferries will be able to carry up to 150 personal cars and 600 passengers will be the first in BC Ferries
fleet to be gas (LNG) fueled with dual fuel engines also capable of burning oil.
Currently the production programme of Remontowa Shipbuilding includes 18 ships: five car and passenger
ferries, five arctic supply and container carrying vessels, four PSV’s, a power cable laying vessel, arctic
AHTS, minehunter for Polish Navy and a sailing vessel for foreign customer. In 2015 the Yard celebrates
70th anniversary and its 1000th launching will take place.

The assembly of the first ferry for Estonia started at Remontowa Shipbuilding
Remontowa Shipbuilding marked commencing the
construction of the first of two double-ended car and
passenger ferries for Estonian customer Port of Tallin
with keel laying on April, 30. The first steel for this
newbuilding was cut on February 20, attended by
the Estonian minister of economy and infrastructure,
Ms. Urve Palo, who started the plasma steel cutting
machine herself.
In result of a tender won by Port of Tallin, the ferry
operator was contracted to run ferry routes linking
mainland Estonia with Saaremaa and Hiiumaa islands
for ten years commencing on October 1, 2016. The
ferries will call at the ports of Kuivastu, Rohuküla,
Virtsu i Heltermaa.

operation will be their competitive edge. Hull lines,
optimized for operation in harsh ice conditions, will contribute to reduced fuel consumption and harmful
emissions. High level of automation will allow vessel operations with a crew reduced to minimum.

3 Aluship Technology, renowned manufacturer of
aluminium ship and offshore structures, operating
in the area of former Gdansk Shipyard, has been
recently occupied with contracts from Dutch Oceanco
shipyard.
The first one regards the superstructure, weighing
some 187 tonnes, to be installed on the megayacht,
Oceanco yard no. Y715. This component will be
shipped to the Netherlands on May 9, 2015, to be
installed on May 21 at Oceanco, according to Krzysztof
Krajewski, Project Manager at Aluship Technology.
The superyacht is expected to be delivered late 2016.
Oceanco is a long-time customer of Aluship
Technology. The most recent structure supplied to
Oceanco was the superstructure installed on a 110 m
long, Y714 megayacht, launched a month ago.

SHIPREPAIRS AND CONVERSIONS
PSV upgraded for ROV support and subsea construction work in Petrobras charter
Platform Supply Vessel (PSV) Up Coral, 87.07 m
in overall length and 18.80 m wide, has arrived to
Remontowa Shiprepair Yard SA to undergo upgrade
through installation of new specialist equipment
leading to expanding of the vessel’s capabilities and
operational functionality. The vessel arrived at the
Yard early March with special deck cargo and its stay
lasted for over a month.
It is probably worth mentioning, the ship itself is
an example of Polish naval architecture and marine
engineering applied in a yard abroad, as the Polish
designed PSV was built in a Chinese yard. The MMC

Remontowa SA has installed ROV service and launching equipment as well as a knuckle boom crane from
Dutch manufacturer Concordia TMS. The crane, with 25 tonne SWL and maximum outreach of 35 m is capable
of operation on the waters up to 3000 m deep. With own diesel power pack of 862 kW and active heave
compensation system, the ship is able to operate in waves up to 2.5 m high and in wind speed up to 20 m/s.
Interestingly, the Brazilian, UP Offshore Ltd. owned and operated Up Coral brought the crane destined to
be installed at Remontowa SA as its own deck cargo right from the manufacturer’s quay. The crane was
loaded onto the PSV at Concordia Group’s quay in Werkendam, the Netherlands. The main particulars of the
specialist offshore crane installed (TMS Offshore Knuckle Boom Active Heave Crane) are as follows: max.
load - 25 tons WLL, max. reach - 35 meters, max. AHC conditions - Hs 2,5 m / 25 t / 15 m, max. working
depth - 3000 m, runner winch - 5 tonnes WLL, max. reach runner - 37 m, man riding - 1 tonne WLL, class
- Lloyds’ Register of Shipping, installed power - 862 kW.
Besides the ROV equipment and 164 tonne offshore knuckle boom crane installation, Remontowa SA has
also performed 3.5 m high mezzanine deck installation (the new deck, weighing 67 tonnes in total and
installed in three sections, is spread over half of the PSV’s work deck area) and some other works. Under this
new deck, containers with equipment will be stored among other items. All in all some 107 tonnes of steel
has been installed, covering also crane foundations, modifications in tanks, some minor piping works, etc.
With new equipment on place, the ship was expected to commence Petrobras charter off Brazilian shores,
where it was about to arrive in the first half of May.
Omalius - the Multi-Purpose Drilling Vessel converted from AHTS
Recently Remontowa Shiprepair Yard SA has been occupied with an interesting conversion and upgrade.
The 83.45 m long, 18.00 m wide, drafting 5,55 m, multipurpose offshore support vessel (OSV) / AHTS
Normand Draupne, has arrived to Remontowa still in its old livery of one of the leading Norwegian offshore
support fleet operators - Solstad Offshore. The ship had plied the Norwegian flag, until quite recently, with
picturesque Skudeneshavn as its homeport (at the same time - the Owners’ headquarters location).
Now the ship is owned and operated by Belgian Owners G-tec SA, which specializes in providing geotechnical
engineering services, as well as marine geophysical surveys and marine environmental surveys. In particular,
the company’s services are targeted to customers active in dredging, offshore renewable energy, ports &
coastal development, infrastructure & civil engineering, pipelines & cables, and mining & quarries.
Normand Draupne arrived to Gdansk based yard on March 5, 2015. The ship represents the Ulstein’s UT 718
design. The AHTS is not young (built in 1985 in Ulstein Hatlo yard, Ulsteinvik), but well maintained and well worth
investment in upgrade, to serve its owners well and perform even most difficult tasks for many years to come.
Extensive range of works has been ordered at Remontowa. These include repair job and conversion resulting
in upgrading and widening the ship’s capabilities. The upgrade mainly meant installation of new crucial
equipment on deck.

After completion of works at Remontowa, the ship has become a drill ship. Not a typical oil and gas exploration
drill ship though, but a geological survey and coring / sampling one.
Current Belgian owners expect employing the ship mainly in offshore wind sector. As such, the ship was
first presented during EWEA Offshore event held in Copenhagen in March 2015. Among the tasks entrusted
to the ship will be the surveying and preparing the seabed for installations of offshore wind farms.
After the conversion and upgrade the Multi-Purpose Drilling Vessel is capable of performing the following
tasks and works: offshore geotechnical site investigation works; offshore drilling works; ROV inspection
works; UXO (unexploded ordnance) clearance works; offshore support; anchor handling and towage and
grouting supply.
At Remontowa, the G-tec Offshore ’s drill rig GT 30, specially designed to work safely in challenging
environmental offshore conditions in high tidal waters (up to 13 m tide), has been installed. The rig is built
on a mezzanine deck, allowing storage of both SBF and SB CPT below the drill floor. A dedicated launching
mechanism offers a quick, smooth and safe switch between drilling mode and seabed CPT mode through
the large moonpool.
The GT 30 rig is fitted with a complete sampling and testing package.
Ex Normand Draupne, now Omalius, during its stay at Remontowa, received, besides the mentioned mezzazine
deck and a drilling derrick, also the moonpool (prefabricated on shore and installed in one piece into a „well”
cut off from the hull).
One of the two large AHTS winches has been dismantled.
The employees of Remontowa SA, supported by teams of Famos and PBUCh (also members of Remontowa
Holding) have refurbished and upgraded accommodation spaces onboard Omalius (refurbishing and outfitting
of cabins on main deck, modernization of the HVAC system). In Gdansk, the G-tec’s drilling vessel received
also new sanitary and sewage water system, electrical system and had its main engine repaired (including
overhaul of shaft lines, propellers, fore and aft thrusters, maintenance of tanks and chain lockers), as well
as the hull maintenance performed in addition to some steelwork (such as repairing indents on bulwark,
replacement of over 100 sacrificial anodes, repairs to the deck crane, etc.). Bio-block has been also installed.
The ship’s stay was scheduled for approx. one and a half month, of which almost a month in dock.

DFDS opts for scrubber on Ark Dania
ME Production subsidiary Marine Exhaust Technology has completed the basic stage of a scrubber retrofit
onboard DFDS vessel Ark Dania, the first of two of the operator’s vessels to install ME scrubbers.
The main part of installation of the hybrid scrubber (with both closed- and open-loop modes) started at
the shipyard Remontowa in Poland at the end of February. Remaining fittings have been completed during
operation.

In open-loop mode, seawater is used in a specially
designed spray system to reduce SOx in the exhaust
gas. With continuous measurements ensuring that the
water has the required alkalinity. In closed-loop mode,
sodium carbonate is added in a closed system by a
newly developed dosing system, enabling operators
to avoid using more expensive and unwieldy caustic
soda. Water discharged overboard complies with all
applicable regulations (MEPC.184 (159)). In closedloop mode, the recirculated water is purified before
it is discharged. Washwater residues are collected in
tanks and are delivered in the respective ports of call.

and was installed without major changes to the ship’s
construction.
By the end of May 2015, Remontowa Shiprepair Yard SA will have completed installations of scrubbers on
29 ships.
Ship repairs at Naval Shipyard in Gdynia
On 25th of March, on the basis of the consortium
agreement, the Naval Shipyard and the Armament
Inspectorate of Polish Navy have signed the agreement
for docking and intermediate repairs of the rescue
vessel ORP Piast. The scope of works contained
repairs of supportive devices, decompression
chamber, the lifting device of a diving bell, the hull and maintenance of the vessel’s tanks. Moreover repairs
have been provided to the line shaft, the steering
gear, general ship supplies, navigation equipment
and communication devices, military equipment in
addition to changing of accommodation facilities.
The overhaul is was scheduled to start before mid
April 2015.

mainly the hull high pressure washing, painting of an underwater part of a ship, as well as measurements of
rudder plate and the shaft.
On Tuesday, 7th of April 2015 at Naval Shipyard the class survey of a Polish owners’ tugboat Tytan commenced.
The main scope of works included: propeller repair, HP washing of a hull and a superstructure of a vessel,
sandblasting and painting, overhaul of bottom and board valves, bow fenders parts exchange and fender’s
modification with its new installation, bow hawse-hole replacement, overhaul, cleaning, maintenance and
painting of anchor chains. Inspection of anodes and its replacement has also been foreseen.
On April 20, 2015, the multipurpose cargo / container ship Zeus of German shipowner Reederei M. Lauteriung
Gmblt & Co. KG has started the class survey at Naval Shipyard in Gdynia. The scope of works included:
docking, hull maintenance, replacement of sacrificial anodes, general overhauling of steering unit and pipe
works on the hydraulic pipes on deck. Besides the repair included general overhauling of fire fighting pump,
cleaning and repair of chain and anchors. There has also been general overhauling of ME Dentz SBV type
with T/C coolers and water and oil pumps carried out, along with small steelwork on the hull. The repairs
also included loading test of rescue boat davit. The completion of repairs has been scheduled for the turn of
first and second decade of May.

Aluship Technology builds topsides components for Gina Krog platform
Aluship Technology is nearing completion of the
200-tonne block for living quarters module of the
Gina Krog platform. The structure is being built
for Norwegian group Apply Leirvik, subcontractor
to Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering
(DSME) of Korea.
The main owner and operator of the Gina Krog
platform (and developer of the offshore oil field)
is Statoil, but there is also Polish company PGNiG
among the project shareholders. The aluminium
module under construction at Alutech Technology is

and 029B in the North Sea, Norway. Gina Krog is
located some 30km away from the Sleipner platform
in approximately 110 m water depth. The field is currently in development, with approximately USD 5 bn
being invested, and first production is scheduled for early 2017. The gross recoverable reserves are estimated
at 225 million barrels of oil equivalent.
Gina Krog will be developed via a new, standalone, 20 well, 70 bed jacket platform, which has a designed
production capacity of 10,000 Sm3/d of oil and 9,000,000 Sm3/d of gas. Stabilised oil will be stored in an
FSO and shipped to refineries by shuttle tankers. Rich gas will be processed at the Sleipner A platform, and
sales gas will be sent to the UK and EU markets via Gassled. Condensate will be routed via the Sleipner R
platform, and then processed at Kårstø into NGL products.
Licenses include Statoil (58,7 %), Total (30,0 %), PGNiG Upstream Int. (8,0 %) and Det Norske (3,0 %).
Aluship Technology owns the 4 ha ground and 10,000 m² production hall with modern, robotized flat
panels production line for panels up to 12.5 m in width, allowing for single sided full penetration welding
of aluminum plates which is a unique capability in an European scale. The company’s crew comprises 170
employees.

Activ now holds business license for special tasks
Effective from April 9, 2015, Activ Ltd. holds the special the business license issued by the of Polish Ministry
of the Interior. The license covers business activities in the scope of manufacturing and trade of explosives,
arms, munitions and dealing with the military and law enforcement related products and technology.
Vessel bridge panels lighting from Famor

and ship automation panels. As the manufacturer states the new
product features excellent luminancy parameters as well as compact,
robust, durable and ergonomic luminaire. The heart of the light is

On April 21, onboard the museum tall ship Dar Pomorza, moored permanently in Gdynia - the symbolic
“craddle of navigators” and the headquarters of Association of Deep Sea Masters Mariners, president of
Remontowa Holding SA, Piotr Soyka, was presented with a captain’s hat, which means he became a honorary
member of the Association.
The event was hosted by master mariner and president of the Association of Deep Sea Masters Mariners,
Andrzej Królikowski, who said: - As a shipbuilder, for many years, you have shown us how the ships may
sail safely, for what we salute you.
- The whole professional life of Piotr Soyka proves how to achieve success under difficult circumstances
the shipbuilding industry operates in. During stormy times, the role of the captain is essential. Piotr Soyka
swiftly navigated the shipyard boat through the reefs of Polish economy transition and under his command
Remontowa has become one of the world’s best shipyards - the Port of the Gdansk harbour captain Wiesław
Piotrzkowski added, speaking on behalf of the community of captains.
The main part of the event was the ceremony of presenting the captain’s hat to Piotr Soyka, who could not
hide emotions.
Later all the ceremony attendees saluted Polish flag on Dar Pomorza.
President of Remontowa Holding presented the Association with ship’s bell, specially crafted for this
occasion, rang “four bells” on it and thanked the master mariners for the privilege to become the member
of their community. He has also written down his commemorative verses and signature in Visitors’ Book of

the Association, which also has former president Lech Wałęsa and IMO Secretary General Koji Sekimizu

This corresponded to a total gross tonnage of 25,600
(down by 26.2 % from previous year). In terms of
compensated gross tonnage, Polish shipbuilding production, according to GUS, amounted to 47.100 CGT
and was down by 31.5 % year to year.
Other non-cargo carrying ships amounted to 62.5 % of total shipbuilding production. Similarly, in terms of
deadweight, non-cargo carrying vessels dominated the production output in 2014 as a single largest category
(46.8 %).
Orderbook at the end of 2014, according to GUS, was the same in ship numbers as the year before, however
the growth was seen in terms of gross tonnage (33.4 % up from the previous year) and CGT (up by 32.5 %).
Here, in orders, again, non-cargo carrying vessels prevailed (single largest category of 47.4 % in numbers
and in deadweight - 44.7 %).
The number of ships repaired in Polish yards increased by 12.6 percent from 2013 to the level of 599 units in
2014. These represented aggregated gross tonnage of 5.5 million (up bz 17.0 % from 2013).
In 2014 591 sailing sport and leisure boats were manufactured in Poland and 589 motor sea-going leisure boats.
During 2014 also 31 partially outfitted hulls were built in Poland.

In April 2015 the first edition of the Poland@ SEA magazine was issued. The magazine
is destined for the OTC Houston USA, the Norshipping Oslo Norway and the Offshore

The issue has been focused on the most interesting projects executed in shipyards and
other companies operating within the maritime industry in Poland. Vessels built and
being under construction, offshore oil & gas platforms and vessels conversions, repairs
and services executed in shipyards due to the enforcement of new emission control
areas, new designes of vessels and other floating objects made in Poland as well as
contribution of domestic companies building ship hulls and sections to the production
of innovative vessels in other European countries over the last year and ongoing projects
as well are presented in the magazine.
The Poland@SEA also promotes products and services of some ship equipment manufacturers and service
suppliers offered to the market. The magazine has been issued by the TEMAT Ltd. publishing house in
Gdansk, Poland.
