Corporate Engagement Forum is a patient focused forum designed to address challenging issues faced by patients. There
are a series of topics in this session.
Topic 1: Understanding Blood Products, Araba Afenyi-Annan, MD, MPH, Adjunct Assistant Clinical Professor, Blood Banking/Transfusion Medicine, Department of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine, University of North Carolina Hospitals
Goal: Increase patient knowledge and understanding of the blood they are receiving to advocate for their own medical care when
seen at a hospital other than a sickle cell center.
Focus: Knowledge and understanding of transfusions for patients and parents about the blood products they receive. Understanding matched blood, the long term risks of chronic transfusions, logistics required by the blood center/hospital to obtain matched
blood, and the cost to patients.
