Dear Friends and Supporters,
oung Horizons has the privilege of providing quality child care
to low-income families on a daily basis. Our programs offer a
friendly, caring environment for children to grow and thrive. We
know we are making a difference in our community, one child at a
time.
The recession and its effects on the State budget impacted us
greatly. But we know our mission is vital to the community we
serve. Our challenge was to bring our childcare services into
alignment with these reduced funds and yet maintain the high
quality of early care and education for which we are known.
Through adjustments in programs and curriculum , we are able to
reduce costs and report that our 2012-2013 financial position will
be in balance.
We are grateful for our continued supporters who believe in and
support the important work we do. Together we are making a
difference and look forward to a successful 2013-14

We Make Children’s Future Brighter
Building Solid Foundations
Overview of Young Horizons and our Programs
Our Services Create a Solid Foundation for a Bright Future
Founded in 1969, Young Horizons is a 501(c)(3) non-profit agency
licensed and funded by the State of California. We provide full day
early care and education and half day preschool programs to children
of low-income families in a caring, loving and learning environment.
Program for Low-income Families
Full-day care is available to parents who
are employed, looking for work or attending school. The half-day preschool
program focuses on preparing children
for kindergarten. Parents must meet
income requirements. Our goal is to
assist parents in ending the cycle of
poverty and give children a solid foundation upon which to build a bright future.
Age Appropriate Programs
Our programs are designed to enhance
the latest teaching methods and environment to stimulate and challenge the
children. These high-quality programs
develop the entire child. Our curriculum
concentrates on the growth and nurturing of their social, cognitive, creative,
emotional and physical attributes.
Ages Served
We serve children ages 6 months to 5
years of age. Many of our children are
enrolled for the entire early care and
education program we offer. It is gratifying to have this parental trust. Parents
know their child is in a safe, caring, loving and learning environment. We
graduated 247 children ready for Kindergarten this fiscal year.
Qualified Teachers
We make it a priority to have competent, certified staff whose life passion is
working with children. They implement
our programs in a relaxed, nurturing
environment that offers aspects of both
home and school. Our teachers attend
continuing education classes to be advised on the latest information and
techniques.
Healthy Meals and Snacks
Young Horizons provides 1028 delicious
meals and snacks daily. Our Food Program meets the federal nutrition guidelines for healthy living and is funded
through the California Child and Adult
Care Food Program. Children’s early
eating experiences affect future eating
habits.
Parent Involvement
To enhance communication between
parent and teacher, we have scheduled
parent/teacher conferences as well as a
parent advisory board called the Organization of Parents and Teachers (OPT).
These both help strengthen the parent/
teacher connection through mutual
support and involvement.
4
Our greatest reward is knowing that the programs and services at
Young Horizons have prepared our children to begin on the path of
growing and learning, to become productive and successful adults and
be a positive force in the future.

How Young Horizons Helped Me
Young Horizons Changed My Life
When I found out that my wife was sick, I did
not know what to do with my young son, Justin. I
thought I would have to quit my job and get on
welfare in order to take care of my son. I needed
child care, so I turned to Young Horizons for help.
They were able to enroll Justin in child care so I
could continue working and not lose my job.
I want to say, “Thank you” to all the eligibility
staff at Young Horizons for making it happen and to the teaching staff
for taking such good care of my son. I am so grateful!

Young Horizons celebrates our staff
At our annual staff development training day in August 2012, 19 staff were
recognized for their years of service
with Young Horizons. 13 staff received 5
year awards, 1 received her 10 year
award, 4 received 15 year awards and 1
staff member received her award for 20
years of service. Our diverse, multilingual staff is the backbone of Young
Horizons and the vital link between the
administration who creates the programs and curriculum and the children
who benefit from them. We are grateful
for our dedicated staff and the loving
and caring attention they give our children. Their long-term tenure is a reflection of our success in creating a quality
child care agency and working environment.

Our Curriculum
Recognizes that Children Develop and Grow Individually in each of these Areas:
Social: (family, friends, relationships) Children grow up as members of
families, cultures, and societies. Problem solving skills and opportunities to practice social skills are integrated throughout the day. We use
an anti-bias approach that empowers children to respect themselves
and others.
Physical: (for healthy development children need healthy bodies)
Nutrition, exercise, rest, and attention to health and safety are
all incorporated into our curriculum.
Cognitive: (thinking, problem solving, laying the groundwork
for later academic success) Young children process the world
differently than adults. Exposure to language and the printed
word, mathematical problem solving, development of the
skills that precede the more concrete learning of elementary
school are carefully planned.
Creative: (art, music, movement, building, storytelling) young children
express themselves in many ways. We provide opportunities and materials with which to create. Our focus is on the process and joy of
creation rather than the product.
Emotional: (feelings, expression, acknowledging self) At the heart of
the curriculum is the child’s unique personality and sense of self.
Children need to feel respected, competent, valued and worthwhile.
They look to the adults in their world to mirror this for them. We
work together with the parent to make every child know they are
important.
