
Read articles on issues related to corruption and Black Money. Based on the information you gather and
your own information, design a cartoon to be published in your school magazine highlighting the corruption
in India Today.
How to draw a political cartoon.
Read the articles and news stories. Take into account what seems to be the general opinion reflected by the
journalists.
Ask yourself whether or not you agree with the journalists or the politicians in the newspaper. If something
strikes you as funny, then write it down.
Write down every word that comes to your mind regarding the issues you’ve read about.
Sketch down the images that come to your mind.
Draw a line between any similarities of words and pictures that you doodle down on the page.
Eventually you will have a map for your big idea. Try to read into what everyone is talking about in the news.
Take the ideas you generated from your notebook map of ideas and twist them around into something
funny.
Draw your final draft of your political cartoon.

2. Writing

An interesting/shocking/frightening occurrence happened in your locality. Write a letter to the editor of the
Hindustan Times telling her/him of your incredible news scoop.
 Look at the movies listed in the paper. See a film and write a review. Remember, to write a review:
1. First, write a PLOT SYNOPSIS. A good rule to follow is never to reveal much more than you might see in a film
preview commercial, or “trailer”, or what might be printed on the back of a video box. Actor’s names, the
parts they play, the director and screenwriter, and the general gistof the story will suffice for Plot Synopsis.
2. Second, offer your OPINION about the film on why you recommend the film- or perhaps why you do not
recommend it. Often, the best and most memorable film reviews are either glowingly positive, or completely
dismissive and negative. Avoid giving a ‘middling’ or ‘mixed’ review. So, it is probably best to to stick to films
about which you have a strong opinion, pro or con.
3. News Coverage
Critically evaluate the news coverage of different events, looking particularly at:





Which events are valued as front page news?
What scientific information is deemed newsworthy?
How coverage varies for different events (i.e. some events get more coverage than others).
How the coverage varies for men and women.
Under what conditions do the different mass media have better news coverage than one another- the
TV coverage is better than the radio, the newspaper is better than the TV and vice versa.
4. Vocabulary


List at least 10 phrases/ idioms from the paper. Find out and write their meanings.
Newspaper headlines often use a play on words along with idioms or puns. Write 10 newspaper
headlines with pictures.
