WHAT IS MENTAL HEALTH COUNSELING?
Mental health counseling is a licensed profession with national standards for graduate
education, training, and clinical practice. Mental health counselors are highly-skilled
professionals who combine traditional psychotherapy with a practical, problemsolving approach that creates a dynamic and efficient path for change and problem

WHAT DO MENTAL
HEALTH COUNSELORS DO?
Mental health counselors help people
improve their lives. They provide
ongoing psychological care to clients
dealing with depression, substance
abuse, unhealthy relationships, and
other psychological and interpersonal
issues. In addition to working directly
with clients, mental health counselors
consult with professionals in education,
medicine, and related fields to gain
a complete understanding of each
client’s unique needs. Common
specialties are substance abuse
counseling, rehabilitation counseling,
school counseling, career counseling,
marriage counseling, and family
counseling. Mental health counselors
may choose to specialize in working
with a particular population, such
as children, adolescents, adults, the
elderly, couples, or families.
WHO SHOULD APPLY?

We encourage applications from those employed in counseling or a related profession who wish to increase their knowledge of the field and
advance in their careers. The program fulfills the educational portion of
the requirements for licensure and provides many opportunities for personal growth, including working with populations that have long been under-served and under-represented.

Prospective students are encouraged to review the New York State regulations governing licensure, available online through the NYSED’s Office
of the Professions at www.op.nysed.gov. Licensure requirements include
a master’s degree in counseling, 3000 hours of post-graduate clinical
experience, and a passing grade on the New York State licensing exam.
ABOUT THE PROGRAM
MENTAL HEALTH COUNSELING MS AT TOURO COLLEGE
The Master of Science in Mental Health Counseling program
is designed to train students to
work with diverse populations
in a variety of mental health
settings including clinics, counseling centers, rehabilitation
facilities, outreach programs, aftercare centers, and private practices. Our experienced faculty
members help students gain the
qualifications and critical-thinking skills needed to obtain state
licensure. Graduates of the program who have completed the
requisite post-graduate clinical
experience and passed the New
York State licensing examination
are eligible to apply for licensure as a Licensed Mental Health
Counselor (LMHC) in New York
State.
COURSE OF STUDY
The Master of Science degree in Mental Health Counseling is
typically earned within three years, during which the student
completes 60 credits of coursework (of which 6 credits are allocated
to a 700-hour clinical internship). Courses are offered on-site at
our Manhattan location weekday evenings and during the day on
Sundays, and online.

Bachelor’s degree or its equivalent from an accredited institution
A minimum undergraduate and graduate GPA of 3.0 (on a
4.0 scale)
Graduate Record Examination (GRE) strongly recommended
Written statement discussing your motivation, interests, and
goals in pursuing graduate study in Mental Health Counseling
Two letters of recommendation
Interview
A brief spontaneous writing sample completed at the time of
the interview
If applicable, TOEFL English Language Proficiency Test
