Hallam Primary School’s learning and teaching programs support and promote the principles and practice of Australian democracy, including

As part of our school’s self-evaluation process
the School Council will be gathering some
community feedback. Members of our Council
will be holding informal discussions with small
groups or individual parents, and some of you
may be asked to complete a short survey. It is
a great opportunity to be part of our school’s
development and we will certainly value your
input.
As you can imagine it would not be possible
for councillors to approach every parent, however if you are not lucky enough to be contacted directly, and would like to contribute,
please feel free to obtain a copy of the survey
from the Office.

chool Photo Day
A reminder that school photos will be
taken on Monday (18.05.2015). All students are required to wear approved Hallam
Primary School uniform.
This year a NAPLAN Observer attended
Hallam PS. Observers are allocated to schools
on a 3-4 year cycle to ensure compliance with
the NAPLAN guidelines. Feedback from the
Observer was complimentary of Hallam PS’s
compliance, which is overseen by Ms Melissa
Gurtler and the Years 3 and 5 teachers.
NAPLAN reports will be distributed later in the
year, and data will be reported in the 2015
Hallam PS Annual Report, and on the
MySchool website in 2016.

anberra Camp
The recent Canberra Camp was
again very successful. The chance to
visit so many interesting places, and learn so
much about Australia’s capital city and government, is a fantastic opportunity for students.
Unfortunately, significantly increasing costs
may have made this our last Canberra Camp.
Thank you to those parents who provided their
children with this wonderful experience. Camps
are a fantastic way to develop students’ independence and self-reliance, to get to know their
teachers and peers under different circumstances, and to see and learn new things.

Students from our school recently visited Canberra on an educational tour of the national capital. Students were given the opportunity to participate in a variety of educational programs with
a focus on Australia’s history, culture, heritage
and democracy.
The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to
visit the national capital as part of their Civics
and Citizenship education. To assist families in
meeting the cost of the excursion the Australian
Government has contributed funding of $30 per
student under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate program towards those costs. This
rebate was taken into account when determining the final costing of the Canberra Trip, and is
paid directly to the school upon completion of
the excursion.
Hallam PS staff and students had a wonderful
trip. We were very proud of the behaviour of
our students, and appreciated their respect for
the many culturally sensitive venues we visited.
We trust that the participants learnt a great deal
about our very picturesque capital city and have
shared that learning and fun with their families.

I really enjoyed visiting the AIS because there was
lots of things to see and hear about Sports. Our
guide was a sprinter and her name was Sarah. She
showed us the swimming pool, the gym, the volleyball court and the area for training gymnastics.

My favourite place I visited in Canberra was the
Royal Australian Mint because I learnt about the
history of coins and was able to see how they are made. I also got to mint my own $1
coin to take home! Joshua
We visited New Parliament House during our trip to Canberra. It was really good because we got to do a role play of Parliament. I had to count how many 'Yes' votes for
our side which the Opposition. We were debating whether houses should have a water
tank. The government side won. Sean
At the Australian War Memorial, we got to look through the museum and learnt lots
about people who fought in wars. We also saw the names of all the soldiers who had
died in wars on the memorial walls. At the end of the day we went to The Last Post Ceremony. We heard about a soldier in the First World War and heard The Last Post play.

At Questcon, we were able to see what Earthquakes were like. We
also went to a show that taught us about illusions and perception.
There was also a robot that talked! Rubie
I enjoyed visiting the High Court of Australia because we got to see
where the judges sit and learn about how it runs. One of our
guides named Cecil taught us about the Constitution. Samir
We visited the Australian Electoral Office. They taught us how democracy works in Australia and we were able to have our own election. We got to vote on favourite fruits and I was one of the people
who counted votes. Apples won! Also, at Parliament House, we had
a role play and I was the Speaker. My job was to keep everyone in
order which was lots of fun. Christian

Our school is conducting a survey to find out
what your child thinks of our school. The Attitudes to School survey is an annual survey for
Years 5 to 12 students offered by the Department of Education. It is designed to assist
schools in gaining an understanding of students'
perceptions and experience of school. Our
school will use the survey
results to plan programs
and activities to improve
your child's experience at
school.
Students in Year 5 and 6 have participated in this
year’s survey. All responses to the survey are
anonymous. This year the Attitudes to School
survey will be conducted at our
school in early May, due to our
Canberra trip. The survey only
takes 20-30 minutes to complete
and occurs during your child's class
time.
The survey results will be reported back to the
school at the end of July. Please speak to your
child’s teacher if you would like more information.

It has been terrific to see so many students wearing their SunSmart hats during
our warmer sunny days. The UV rating is
now low, so it is recommended that students enjoy the sunshine to absorb vitamin D.
Hats do not need to be worn during
term 2 and 3… although on sunny days
in September, UV alerts will be out.
Hattslotto will start again in term 4.

Hattslotto this year.
All students are able to choose a piece of fruit
on alternate Fridays, provided free by our Parent
Group, and coordinated by Mrs Gupta. Our
trusty aides sort, and fruit monitors distribute.
This is amazingly popular … with NO fruit left to
go to waste.
Hello everyone!!
We hope everyone is having an amazing Term so far! Last week at OSHClub we had an
animal theme where we made rabbits, elephants and butterflies. The children enjoyed
the different crafts and different mediums they were exposed to. This week we have
some more fun activities including bead work, paper mache and some cool street art to
finish off the week!
The children are really enjoying playing soccer at OSHClub this Term and are still in
the spirit of active April! As a result, this week we are trying out chair soccer! The
children always have a lot of fun playing games that get everyone involved. We have
further been setting up relays for the children which they have loved!
We are hoping to have more children join us! If you work early or finish late than OSHClub is the place for your children!
Please feel free to come and check out our program or ask any questions you may have
involving Before School Care or After School Care from the OSH Club coordinator.

DEXTER THE COURAGEOUS KOALA
POLY CONFERENCE
On Wednesday 13th May the 3/4 module took part in a Video Conference
about the book, ‘Dexter the Courageous Koala’. Author Jesse Blackadder
discussed her novel, ‘Dexter the Courageous Koala’, and spoke about the
characters, events and settings. The 3/4 students participated in discussions
with Jesse Blackadder and students from other schools across Australia.
The 3/4 students then got the chance to create their own story based on the
animals that live in nearby ecosystems.
Through this great experience we got to learn about the importance of environments to animals and people, and different ways they can be protected
and how living things, including plants and animals, depend on each other
and the environment to survive.

The Cadbury Chocolate Drive is going well, and a big THANK YOU to you those of you
who have sold your chocolates and brought back your money.
I will be drawing out some more prizes in assembly this FRIDAY with our MAJOR PRIZES being drawn on May 28th at the conclusion of the Chocolate Drive.

Don’t forget, if you have any preloved clothing that you no longer
need, please bring them to school for our SIDS and Kids clothing
collection. We take clothing, linen, towels, anything that can be
used again.
