Harwood Weekly Update
Harwood Union Recognized for Tolerance Efforts
The Southern Poverty Law Center’s Teaching Tolerance program has named
Harwood Union as a Mix It Up Model School for its exemplary efforts to foster respect
and understanding among its students and throughout its campus during the 2014-15
school year. We are one of 104 schools to receive this National honor.
The Mix It Up Model Schools met five criteria: They each hosted a Mix it Up at
Lunch Day during the 2014-15 school year; they included different members of the
school’s community—cafeteria staff, aides, administrators, teachers and students—in
organizing the event; they followed up with at least two additional Mix It Up-related
programs or events on campus; they publicized Mix It Up at Lunch Day or celebrated
inclusiveness with posters, announcements and other media; and their event was seen
by students and school officials as a success.
Mix It Up at Lunch Day is a simple call to action. By asking students to move out
of their comfort zones and connect with someone new over lunch, the event encourages
students to identify, question and cross social boundaries.
The Southern Poverty Law Center is a nonprofit civil rights organization that combats
bigotry and discrimination through litigation, education and advocacy.

Excellence in the Classics: A Class Act
Harwood’s ultra-dedicated polyglot in cowboy boots, Tami Munford, has been our Latin
Teacher Extraordinaire for 21 years, and has inspired an impressive number of alumni to go
on in the Classics and in the study of others languages.
Tami attended Middlebury College as an undergraduate, where she studied Ancient Hebrew
and majored in Ancient Greek, German and Latin. If you ask her nicely, she may even sing
the opening lines of Homer’s Iliad – in the original.
Subsequently, she lived in Caracas, Venezuela for five years and became fluent in Spanish.
On her return to Vermont, she earned two Master’s Degrees from the Middlebury Language
Schools – one in German and the other in Spanish. She has also attended summer
programs there in Italian and Chinese.
Magistra Munford has led Harwood students to glory at UVM’s Latin Day for two decades. In
the last ten years, Harwood has returned home seven times in triumph bearing the coveted
Silver Bowl. Our accumulation of Blue Ribbons for student projects and Best in Show
trophies is of epic proportions.
Magistra lives with her husband, David, at their museum / library / armory Bed and Breakfast
home in Middlebury. She is a notable cook whose fish tempura is legendary. She is also a
fine watercolor painter, who has written and illustrated two yet unpublished children’s books.
Tami will be retiring at the end of the school year; however, her exemplary Latin program and
the love of learning the Classics she has instilled in her students will continue to be
legendary.

Harwood Union Building Project - Update
The Harwood Union Board of Directors have been in dialog for many years
regarding the state of the Harwood building and grounds. Last year money
was allocated in the budget to conduct a building study for the 2014/15
school year. After a comprehensive bid process, the Board voted to select
Truexcullins, a Burlington firm, to conduct the study.
On Wednesday, April 29th, representatives from Truexcullins presented a
brief overview of the project to the high school student body. Later this
month, Truexcullins will present to the Harwood Faculty and Staff and then
conduct several days of site visits in order to meet with teachers and
students and gather input about updating the building so that it meets the
needs of 21st Century teaching and learning.
The structural evaluation has been completed and the results will be
presented to the Harwood Union School Board’s Facilities Committee on
Wednesday, May 20th. In addition, the next steps in the building project
process will be identified.

ONLINE COURSES
VTVLC is the program through which Harwood students can
access a limited number of accredited online high school courses
for free. The courses run concurrently with school terms, and
therefore represent commitment over and above regularly
scheduled courses. Slots are limited, and will be available next
year only to members of the classes of 2016 and 2017 on a first
come, first serve basis. If interested, you should contact your
school counselor as soon as possible to complete the preapproval process.
