Hatchery Cohort 2015 - Getting Started
Congratulations on your acceptance into the Entrepreneurship Hatchery’s 2015 cohort!
At the Hatchery, we are invested in building a strong entrepreneurial community at the University of
Toronto. We believe there is an entrepreneurial seed in every UofT student, and this experiential learning
opportunity will provide the resources, mentorship, and community to turn your ideas into successful
start-ups.
During the summer, from May to the end of August, we expect focus and dedication from every one of
you to your start-up. Your relationship with your team members, and with the Hatchery’s connectors and
mentors, will evolve organically. We will be working hard to develop and maintain open, two-way
communication between the Hatchery team and your start-up, and we ask that you strive to do the same.
We share your passion for entrepreneurship and believe that the experience will be a valuable one. We
look forward to a transformative, productive, and fun summer!
Business Model Generation Canvas
This is the tool that you will use to formally develop and validate the hypothesis of your start-up over the
summer. Think of it as your business plan. You will be responsible for accessing this tool through your
team’s Hatchery Dashboard (available on the website: http://hatchery.engineering.utoronto.ca/login/ ) and
completing it as you flesh out the various aspects of your start-up.
We know that you may be unfamiliar with the canvas right now, but that’s what the Hatchery is here for.
You will find lectures on the different canvas sections titled “Udacity—How to Build A StartUp” on your
dashboard. We encourage you to familiarize yourself with this. We also have workshop sessions
scheduled to help you get a handle on the Business Model Canvas for in-person discussion. Details on
how to sign in to your Dashboard are in the “Hatchery Resources” document. That said, do not hesitate
to reach out to the Hatchery’s Connectors for support.

Calendar
The following table represents a high-level schedule for the summer.
Pitches are formal sessions where you will be presenting the status your starup to a group of your peers
and mentors.
Each team will be allotted 5 minutes to present, with 10 minutes for Q&A.
Idea Market will complement the Pitches, and will provide an open venue for peer-to-peer feedback
within the cohort. By bouncing ideas off your fellow cohort members, you will be able to refine your startup’s solution and build your Hatchery network.

Demo Day 2015 is the Hatchery’s annual showcase where you have the opportunity to pitch to
successful entrepreneurs from industry and the University of Toronto. You will compete for a total of
$42,500 worth of prizes. To earn your spot at Demo Day, your team will go through a nomination process
where 5 independent judges will select the teams that will pitch on the day.

Workspace Allocation
Each team will be assigned a workspace where they are expected to be meeting daily to work and
brainstorm. We have two locations—BA1120 and the Mining Building Penthouse. The office space in
Fields Institute (222 College Street) will be available for private meetings.
Although we understand some team members may be unable to be physically present on campus every
day, we strongly encourage all of you to use your space to the fullest and take ownership of it. These
workspaces are meant to serve as a collaborative hub where you can build your start-up alongside your
fellow teams. The spaces will be equipped with all-you-can-drink free coffee!
