Pozzi & Babe On The Chase Capture LG Pro Classic Slot Race
By Tanya Randall
Two-time WPRA World Champion Brittany Pozzi is now a
two-time $100,000-slot race winner with a futurity horse. At the
9th Annual LG Pro Classic in Kinder, La., Pozzi and her homebred 4-year-old mare Babe On The Chase (“Birdie”) captured the
$115,000 Invitational Slot Race Championship with a 14.220.
The Victoria, Texas, barrel racer used her years of experience in
high-pressure situations to make a business run rather than go for
broke.
“I told myself I need to play this smart,” she said. “I just need to
make a smooth clean run because there were a lot of hit barrels. It
was like a demolition derby. I thought I just need to keep the barrels
up and see what they pay me. I don’t need to go in there and try to
blow everyone’s doors off and end up not getting a check. In a way
I feel like I played it safe, but then she really clocked.”
Prior to Kinder, Birdie had only made eight competitive runs—
two at the BFA Juvenile in Oklahoma City, a jackpot in Stockdale,
Texas, a jackpot in Colorado and two-runs at Blackmon Quarter
Horses Futurity in Gonzales, Texas, where they finished sixth in
the average. All of those runs were vastly different from the small
setup at Kinder with its short run to a blind first barrel.
“I’ve been running her in all these pens where it’s a long run to
the first barrel like Oklahoma City and Stockdale,” said Pozzi. She
and Birdie were the 13th fastest in the Qualifying Round with a
14.495. “I think I shocked her in the first round of the slot race.
The first round of the futurity, I thought I’m going to let her cruise
to it and let her nail it and then go on. I used my futurity run like
an exhibition—though not really—and she goes and wins the first
round. I was shocked. I had no idea that she was this nice. It was
a total shock to me—which it usually is when I do go at Lance’s
because I don’t have that many runs on them.”
Pozzi and Birdie posted their fastest run of the event, a 14.129, in
the open round of the futurity on Friday. They came back Sunday
with a 14.548 to win fifth in the BFA Futurity for $4,989 and earn
$2,668 on their carryover times in the open. Their total haul was
$122,657.
“I really don’t know that much about her,” laughed Pozzi. “I
raised her and trained her, but as far as running her in competition,
I don’t know that much about her. I was really impressed when she
came in made another good run on Sunday. That made me really
happy. She’s barely had four runs, much less four runs in one weekend. Well, actually more than that, because I cruised her through
pretty good in exhibitions. She’s never had that much pressure put
on her.”
Birdie is by leading sire Chasin Firewater, who just happens to be
a three-quarter brother to Alive N Firen, the sire of Pozzi’s World

Champion Yeah Hes Firen (“Duke”). The mare is out of Streakin
Six Babe, a daughter of Streakin Six that Pozzi purchased from
Charmayne James. Both James and Pozzi won WPRA World Championships aboard Streakin Six geldings—James on Cruisin On Six
and Pozzi on Sixth Vision (“Stitch”).
Streakin Six Babe has been a strong producer for Pozzi’s program. Her first foal for Pozzi was 2012 Diamonds & Dirt Futurity
Champion Ima Super Fly Guy, by Frenchmans Guy. She’s also produced multiple futurity finalist and pro rodeo money earner Smoke
N The Babes, a 6-year-old gelding by Smoke N Sparks.
Pozzi also has Streakin Is Easy, a 5-year-old mare by Dashin Is
Easy. Streakin Is Easy has had some injuries, but Pozzi has her well
and has started her back. Pozzi also has a Dash Ta Fame 2-year-old,
a Be A Magnolia Runner yearling, a Firewaterontherocks filly on the
ground and is awaiting two Frenchmans Guys later this spring out
of Streakin Six Babe.
“All that mare’s babies have had a motor,” said Pozzi. “I’ve excited about Birdie and her future for sure.”
Like all of Pozzi’s prospects, Birdie spent a year with Paul Bass
in Florida getting broke, but the spooky mare quickly showed Pozzi
she was going to need more riding than some of her other futurity

Sanders Silet Auction
A well known barrel racer, Tahnee Sanders, of Lebanon, Nebraska was recently involved in a bad ATV accident, leaving her paralyzed. She is starting to have some movement and the family would
like to continue her rehabilitation at Craig Hospital in Colorado to
give her the opportunity to regain her normal life and activities. To
help, we have set up an online silent auction on Facebook at “Benefit Silent Auction for Tahnee Sanders.” Over 65 items have been
offered at this point ranging from stallion breedings to many nice
custom items including tack and metal art. National barrel racing
organizations including Better Barrel Racing, Future Fortunes and
Bonus Race Finals have also donated general packages and support. People have been very generous and it shows how tight knit
and supportive the barrel racing community is. The auction ends
Wednesday February 25th at 7:00 PM CST. For more information
contact Deb Christy, 785.543.7829.
Formation of the ERA Announced
The Elite Rodeo Association (ERA), an innovative new rodeo
corporation created and owned by the top rodeo athletes in the
world, is proud to announce its formation.
The ERA plans to work in cooperation with existing rodeo venues and sports arenas across North America to create an exciting
and sought after tour. In addition, ERA is focused on the future
generations of top rodeo athletes with a mission of ensuring the
integrity of the sport of rodeo and providing additional opportunities for professional rodeo cowboys, cowgirls and industry partners
for years to come.
The ERA is owned by the top 55 rodeo athletes, 42 of which are
World Champion Rodeo Cowboys & Cowgirls. While the current
ownership includes existing top competitors, the progressive model
allows for aspiring elite rodeo athletes to participate and earn ownership in the ERA.
Governed by a seven-member board that will consist of three
rough stock representatives, three timed event representatives and
one administrative official, the athlete-owned organization will
showcase the best cowboys and cowgirls, whose eligibility to compete will be determined by the ERA qualification system. In 2016,
the ERA will produce a 15-event regular-season tour, all broadcast
on national network television, culminating with a 5-day World
Championship event. “We are excited about building and releasing
our 2016 season and plan to increase the number of tour stops in
the years to come.
Exciting announcements about the 2016 tour will be coming
soon. More information will be released through erarodeo.com and
our Facebook page, ERA Rodeo. Media Contacts: Holly DeLaune,

prospects.
“When I got her back from Paul and started riding her, she was
scared of everything,” said Pozzi. “I was riding her one time and
I my text alert went off in my back pocket, and I thought I was a
goner. She ran off. It freaked her out. She freaked me out. I knew
I was going to have to get some more rides on her. Basically, the
two that were behind went with me to Colorado. I turned her and
another 3-year-old I took out in a 100 acre pasture. Basically, I rode
and worked her when I had time.”
Birdie had just three exhibition trips and they were all at Gonzales, Texas, before going to the BFA World Championships for the
Juvenile.
“She won 10th in the (Future Fortunes) Sire’s Slots at BFA and
was right out of placing in the average,” said Pozzi. “I could tell she
was going to be nice. Did I think she was going to win the slot race
at Lance’s? Heck no!”
The $115,000 couldn’t have come at a better time for Pozzi, who
is currently rebuilding her rodeo string since the retirement of
Duke, and for JB Quarter Horses’ Chasin Firewater, who will miss
the 2015 breeding season due to complications from an old injury
to his stifle.
“It’s what we all needed,” said Pozzi. “From JB Quarter Horses
to my deal, we all needed a little pick-me-up. I’d like to thank Dee
and Joe (Braman) of JB Quarter Horses. They’ve been amazing,
helping me out whenever I needed it. They’ve been very supportive.
And, it awesome that Birdie gets to run at all that extra incentive
money.”
In the meanwhile, Pozzi has pro rodeos in San Antonio, San Angelo and Tucson. Her two mounts for the time being are pro rodeo
winner Shes Free To Flame (“Teddy”) and 2014 Diamonds & Dirt
Slot Race Champion Kisskiss Bangbang (“Mona”).
“Mona clocked fabulous at the winter rodeos, but has hit barrels.”
lamented Pozzi. “She’s rating off the barrels really bad and I’m hav-
Barrel Racing Report
ing trouble getting around them inside. I rode Teddy at San Angelo
and she did really well there, so I’m probably just going to run
Teddy at San Antonio. (Her boyfriend Garrett Tonozzi suggested
Birdie get the call.) I’m going to run Mona at Diamonds & Dirt and
then take her to California and run her outside. I may run her at
Tucson.”
Balancing her rodeo schedule and her futurity horses has always
been challenging. She usually goes to most of the early futurities
that fit in her with rodeo schedule, but LG Pro Classic has always
been one of her favorites.
“I’ve always enjoyed Lance’s futurity,” she said. “I’ve always
done good there. I like the format. I like how you get two chances.
They’ve just treated me so good. Everyone in the office has been so
helpful. I just really enjoy going to Kinder. It’s one of my favorite
places to go. That always helps when you are some place you want
to be.”
Pozzi ran six futurity horses at Kinder and said she was pleased
with all of them.
“They all worked good,” she said. “I was happy with all of them.
Some are further behind than others, which is the case in any
trainer’s barn. I have a stud that I’m really excited about – A Guy
With Proof. He’s by Frenchmans Guy out of French Covergirl’s
mother so he’s a three-quarter brother to French Covergirl. The tiny
pen wasn’t his thing, but I’m excited about him.”
Her next major futurity is Diamonds & Dirt, an event she’s won
twice. Then it’s back to focusing on the rodeo horses again.
“Once I get done with Diamonds & Dirt, I’m really going to start
focusing on (Smoke N The Babes) and that 5-year-old sister,” she
said. “Also, I have a 6-year-old World Speed that I really like that I
bought from a friend. I think he’s going to make a rodeo horses. I’m
going to try to get these futurity horses out of the way and focus on
the other ones. It’s hard to do it all. I’ve got to prioritize.

Jatzlau Pilots Imanonstop Fame to LG Pro Classic Futurity Championship
By Tanya Randall
Although her competitive career is long over, Imanonstop
Princess keeps winning through her offspring for Jackie Jatzlau of
Giddings, Texas. The most recent winner for the daughter of Letta
Hank Do It, Nonstop Jet mare is the 4-year-old Dash Ta Fame
gelding Imanonstop Fame (“Prince”), owned by Shelly Weaver,
Drumright, Okla.
At the 9th Annual LG Pro Classic in Kinder, La., Jatzlau guided
Prince to BFA Futurity Championship and total earnings of
$11,407.
“He’s extremely green,” said Jatzlau. “He’s not supposed to be
winning. Inexperience kind of got us in the slot races, but we reLG Pro Classic Slot Race Continued From Page 4
“I don’t out work anybody else. All the people in the futurity
business work really hard. It was just my day at Lance’s and I’m sure
at Diamonds & Dirt it will be somebody else’s. I’m just very thankful for my sponsors and the people I have in my life: my boyfriend
Garrett Tonozzi and his mother—she came down and helped me.
I couldn’t have done it without her. My friend Kaylon Rodriguez
helped me a bunch. It takes a team of people. I can’t do all of this
by myself, so having the help was nice.”

Ironically, Weaver had told Jatzlau to scratch Prince from the
second go of the Futurity if she thought four runs in a row would
be too much for the gelding. However, after hitting barrels in the
qualifying round of the slot race and its consolation, Jatzlau knew
she had to make her fourth run to prepare for the American Semifinals tomorrow morning.
“Four runs on those colts in four day is really hard,” said Jatzlau.
“Shelly told me I could scratch him, but he had to run Sunday for

me. I couldn’t go to the Semifinals like that. I needed to go on a
good note. I had failed him twice, so I had to get my stuff together-trust him and ride him good—and he’ll have a chance to win the
futurity.”
Prince and Jatzlau posted the fastest time of the event, a 14.029,
to win the second round of the futurity and the Open 1D with a
carryover.
“I backed off and sent him like a rodeo horse,” said Jatzlau, “and
he made a phenomenal run. Now we get to go to the Semifinals on
Wednesday with a lot of confidence.”
Prince’s road from prospect to futurity winner has been full of
sharp curves and detours. When Weaver sent the gelding to Jatzlau
last February, the gelding had a little more than a handful of rides
and had to be sent off for more foundation work.
“When I started back riding, I didn’t have a lot of strength in my
hand,” said Jatzlau, referring to the hand she broke at the 2013 BFA
World Championship Futurity and had to have surgically repaired.
“I had ridden him in the roundpen a couple of times and he didn’t
stop very good. I don’t have an arena, and I knew if he took off
with me in the pasture, it was going to be a disaster.”
To give Prince a better handle, Jatzlau sent the gelding to Stephan
Boutin in Montgomery, Texas, for three weeks. She got him back at
Diamonds & Dirt mid-March.
Unbeknownst to Jatzlau, she was pregnant when Prince arrived in
February. After her eight week ultrasound following Diamonds &
Dirt, Jatzlau called Weaver with the news.
“I knew what her expectations were and I offered to help her find
someone else to take him,” Jatzlau said. “After we kicked it around
for a few days and she made a few calls, she called me and asked me
what I was going to do with my two personal futurity horses. I said
I was going to get them as far along as I could, maybe send them
off or swim them a little bit and hope for the best.”
Weaver called back a few days later and decided to leave Prince
with Jatzlau, given her history of success with the horse’s family and
knowing that she could ride behind her when he was finished.
Jatzlau didn’t start Prince on the pattern until May 1 and contin-

ued to train until she was 30 weeks pregnant. Prince went to Teri
George’s in Dripping Springs, Texas, for a week before an injury
to George forced her to send him home. He then went to Liana
DeWeese in Claremore, Okla.
“When I took him up there, I cruised him through to show Shelly
and then cruised him through the next morning for Liana. August
26 was the last time I rode him,” explained Jatzlau.
DeWeese had Prince exactly one month when he got extremely
sick with a respiratory infection. He was in ICU for seven days and
was off for a full month. Prince got cleared to return to work two
days after Jatzlau had her daughter, Journey, on October 20.

“I told Shelly my doctor let me start riding three weeks after I had
(my son) Jagger, so I told her to start riding him,” said Jatzlau. “She
got to ride him about 10 times, just long trotting him. I got cleared
to start riding November 10, and she brought him to me November
8. So, from September 25 to November 10, he never saw a barrel.”
At the 2014 BFA World Championships, Prince exceeded Jatzlau’s
expectations, placing in a round of the Juvenile with a 15.6. It was
that performance that inspired Jatzlau to make a serious lifestyle
change.
“After we got home from Oklahoma City, I told (my husband)
Lane that this horse is phenomenal and I’m not,” said Jatzlau, 34.
“We’ve got to do something, so we started hitting the gym.
“Not only was I pregnant last year, but I started the year injured.
I wasn’t in the best shape when I got pregnant. I decided that I bust
my butt to make sure these horses are feeling good and are in shape,
and I’m not. How can I expect them to perform their best when
I’m not at mine? I’m stronger than I’ve ever been. I’m fitter than
I’ve ever been. I’m still not exactly where I want to be. I’ve lost all
my baby weight, but I still want to lose 10 more pounds.
“It’s become a lifestyle change. I’ve made it a part of my daily
routine. I made it part of my job to come to the gym daily. We don’t
diet, but we’ve been eating really clean and making healthy decisions, snacking on protein bars instead of chips in the afternoon.”
While Jatzlau was dedicating herself to getting in shape, Prince was
recovering from a relapse of the respiratory illness and got another
full month off.
“I didn’t start riding him again until January 15, and I knew I was
entered in the slot race, so I knew I was on a crunch. I took him to
the first STBRA in Magnolia after riding him a week, and he won
second behind Ashley Penland and VF Coup De Ville. I went to
Caldwell on Wednesday night and won it, and then went back to
Magnolia to another STBRA and won it.”
Jatzlau was entered in the American Qualifier in Glen Rose,
Barrel Racing Report
Texas, on Weaver’s rodeo horse Frenchmans High, but decided to
go with the colt based on his performances at the three jackpots.
“I told Shelly I’ve been running your rodeo horse and your colt, and
the colt’s been outrunning the rodeo horse by 2/10ths every time,”
she said. “The colt is just snappy and running out of the bridle;
I’m running the colt at the Qualifier. I’ll either be crazy for putting
a 4-year-old in it in February or I’ll look like a genius. She laughed
and said OK.”
Prince made his seventh competitive run that Friday and qualified
for the American on Saturday. His next four runs were at Kinder.
Looking back, Jatzlau said her lack of runs and timing caused her to
overthink her slot race runs in Kinder.
“Honestly, I overthought it,” said Jatzlau, who was on her way to
the gym on the Monday following Kinder. “He got a little nervous,
which he had never done before and I over rode him. I rode him
like a colt instead of backing off and riding him like I was confident. My timing is off and I’ve lost my competitive edge. I know
that I’m probably further behind than he is. To run with the best of
the best, you have to be the best. That’s why I’ve been in the gym
so much and riding so hard. I’ve been working my tail in the ground
because I’m at a competitive disadvantage. That’s why I’ve been
working so hard—I know what kind of colt he is.”

Headin’ For Home
I
want to say right here in the beginning of this article…I
KNOW NOTHING ABOUT MULES!
A few months back, Mike was invited to preach at Mule
Days in Ft. Davis, TX. That was a first for us. We’ve done rodeos,
barrel races, ranches and churches…..but no mules. After we
agreed, our friend dropped the bomb that he had entered us in the
team roping and barrel racing! CRIKEY! Let me say, I was VERY
ANXIOUS about it.
Upon arriving (me in a cold sweat) we walked all over looking at
mules. Big ones, little ones, spotted ones, brown ones, big heads,
long ears, big heads, long ears (oh, I said that). The rodeo started
off with the halter show, then the hide race, team roping, barrel race
and ended with the mule race. It was after the halter show that our
friend said he hadn’t really entered us. Thank you Jesus! (I will get
even some day).
After watching 25-35 second barrel runs on a small pattern, I noticed a few things. Most of them carried an over and under and wore
pretty large roweled spurs. LOTS of whipping and LOTS of spurring. Where did they see such a thing?! I know and so do you. They
had been watching, and were imitating, some of us barrel racers.
It’s the same in the Christian world. We get called hypocrites
because sometimes we are. Sometimes we don’t do the right thing
and people see it. It’s easy to judge that. If I’ve heard it once, I’ve
heard it a thousand times….”Look at that! And they are supposed
to be Christians!” Well, I would like to think that barrel racers are
horsemen. Not all of us are. But, like being a Christian, it’s a walk.
You start out believing Jesus is your savior and you go from there.
You read your Bible, you make adjustments, you listen to a teaching
tape, you make adjustments, you watch a faith preacher on tv and
you make adjustments.
Ephesians 5:1 in the Amplified Bible says, “Therefore, be imitators of God (copy Him and follow His example), as well-beloved
children (imitate their father.) When we watch such a good example, we are sure to follow in their footsteps.
M
