welcomes
new arts and
cultural hub
SOUTH Hobart locals
are celebrating confirmation of state and federal
government funding for
the transformation of the
former Macquarie Street
primary school building
into a community, arts
and cultural hub.
The $2.3 million innovative arts and cultural
centre will provide an affordable space for artists,
groups and organisations
and serve as a place for
locals to meet, make new
connections and undertake activities.
The Speaker of
Tasmania’s House of Assembly, Elise Archer MP,
and Tasmanian Liberal
Senator Eric Abetz joined
members of the South
Hobart Progress Association for the announcement last month.
The historic property, which dates back
to 1895, was a school
until 1964 and for the
following 40 years predominantly served as an
adult education facility
owned by the Tasmanian
Government.
The South Hobart
Progress Association
president, Dr Rosemary
Sandford, said the group
was overjoyed with the
news of the redevelopment
“We have got a little
way to go to translate
these financial rewards
into practice, but really,
we could not have done
it without the help of
government,” she said.
Senator Abetz said he
was pleased the infrastructure investment was
moving forward.
“Not only will the
construction work create
jobs, the organisations
that will use these facilities will contribute to
employment locally, and
jobs are expected to be
created as their activities
expand in the new facility,” he said.
“Further, Tasmanian
artists and performers
will have an affordable
space to hold events and
display their works showcasing the best Tasmania
has to offer.”
Tenants expected to
benefit from the new

she said.
“We know that most

facility once improvements are completed
include the Festival of
Voices, the Tasmanian
Writer’s Centre, Mature
Age Dance Experience
(MADE) and the Australian Wooden Boat Festival.
Ms Archer, who first
started lobbying for the
restoration in 2009 as a
candidate prior to being
elected in 2010, said she
was thrilled the muchloved local asset would
finally be utilised.
“I have no doubt the
hub will be a welcome
addition to the South
Hobart area for current
residents, the broader
community and future
generations,” she said.
In 2011 Ms Archer
presented a petition with
more than 700 signatures
to the Tasmanian Parliament calling for the site to
be used as a community
hub after it failed to sell
on the open market.
The Tasmanian
Liberal Government has
now provided a grant
of $600,000 from the
proceeds of sale for
much-needed renovations
required for occupancy.
The Federal Government has provided $1.65
million for the purchase
price.
The site will be
owned and operated
by an entity with the assistance of the Hobart City
Council.
MORE than 8000
Hobart residents and businesses passed copper cutoff deadlines in February
and March, which meant
their phone and Internet
lines would be cut off
shortly.
The disconnection
of copper telephone
lines for these premises
is occurring as part of a
compulsory migration to
the National Broadband
Network (NBN).
A deadline of 20
February affected more
than 4500 homes and
businesses in Sandy Bay,
Dynnyrne, Hobart and
Battery Point while a 20
March deadline involved
3500 premises in Hobart,
Kingston and Blackmans
Bay.
However, Internet
service provider iiNet,
which already has more
than 60,000 customers
using the NBN, confirms
that some people may
not have placed an order
for the NBN to replace
their phone and Internet
services.
iiNet NBN product
manager Rachel McIntyre
said people who had not
yet ordered the NBN to
act immediately.
“While phone and
Internet services may not
have stopped working on
the deadline dates, they
were scheduled to stop
within 10 business days,”
she said.
“The urgent step is
to get your order into
the system through your
preferred supplier.
“To do that, you need
to review the available
NBN services and select
a phone and/or Internet
service that meets your
needs and your budget. If
you have difficulty choosing, ask your neighbours
what they’ve done … and
you can also look online.”
Ms McIntyre said the
move to the NBN was
not automatic.
“With the copper
cut-off deadline passed,
phone and Internet
services will stop working
shortly, if they haven’t
already,” she said.
“Consumers must
either switch to the NBN
or make do with mobile
solutions.
“People need to
recognise that the copper
cut-off is definitely happening.”

New jewel in the crown of Hobart hospitality sector
THE Hobart tourism
industry is abuzz with
excitement following the
announcement that a
187-room Crowne Plaza
hotel will be up and
running in the heart of
the CBD in 2017.
InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG), one of
the world’s leading hotel
companies, has signed a
management agreement
with Tasmania-based
hospitality company
The Kalis Group for the
proposed Crowne Plaza
Hobart.
Marking IHG’s
entry into Tasmania, the
hotel will be part of the
Liverpool Street ICON
Complex - a mixed-use
development by The
Kalis Group which is
expected to become
Tasmania’s premier retail
destination.
Kalis Group chief
executive officer Alexia
Kalis said Hobart was
growing in popularity as
a meetings and tourism
destination, and improvements in air access were
leading to increased
visitor arrivals every year.
“This has been reflected in room rates and
occupancy steadily rising
in the city over the last
few years,” she said.
“Now is a great time
to be developing an
internationally-branded
upscale hotel, as this is
where the biggest opportunity is in the market
right now.
“Crowne Plaza is
globally recognised
as a leading business
hotel brand and we are
confident this is what the
locale needs to meet the
expected tourism boom
in the coming years.
“We are pleased to be

working with IHG and
look forward to welcoming guests to Crowne Plaza Hobart when it opens
in a couple of years.”
Crowne Hobart’s
close proximity to major
government and commercial offices will be a
drawcard for business
guests, with Salamanca
Place and Constitution
Dock also a “stone’s
throw” away.
Crowne Plaza Hobart
will feature a range of
business and meetings
facilities including a
ballroom, meeting rooms,
boardroom and 24-hour
business centre.
Guests will also be
able to enjoy the hotel’s
all-day dining restaurant
and bar, or they could
choose to work out at
the fully-equipped fitness
centre.
IHG’s Australasia,
Japan, Korea & Asia,
Middle East and Africa
(AMEA) chief operating
officer Karin Sheppard
said when expanding
into new markets, the
company chose to work
with owners who understood its brands and were
familiar with the city it
was entering.
“We are delighted to
be establishing our presence in yet another key
Australian city with The
Kalis Group,” she said.
“Hobart is thriving
and tourism is a key part
of that. The location
and facilities of the new
Crowne Plaza Hobart
will make it a great
choice for both business
and leisure guests when
it opens in 2017.”
Crowne Plaza is one
of the fastest growing
hotel brands in the world
with more than 400

1,400km charity walk Work health and safety
has a new home
across Tasmania
HOBART residents are
encouraged to support
a 1,400km charity walk
around Tasmania to raise
awareness about mental
health.
Tasmanian father and
son team Christopher
and Kelvyn Linton are
undertaking an unsupported long-distance
charity walk around the
perimeter of Tasmania.
The walk is estimated to be approximately
1,400km, taking 300plus hours or around 45
days to complete.
Mr Linton said the
purpose of the walk
was to raise funds, bring
awareness to and combat
the stigma associated
with mental illness, particularly depression and
bipolar disorder.
“I am a life-long
sufferer of bipolar disorder, managing the best
I could with the limited
resources available to
me,” he said.
“The walk is to
acknowledge my journey
and make an attempt to
help others who need a
voice.
“We aim to raise
$100,000 to assist the
Black Dog Institute, a
not-for-profit organisation and world leader in
the diagnosis, treatment
and prevention of mood
disorders.
“We want to create
awareness and positive
change by doing something really spectacular.”
Mr Linton said donations would be collected
on the way and via the
website.
“Chris’s Earth Walk
for Hope” started in Port
Arthur on 1 April and
will culminate at the
Bruny Island Cheese
Company on 16 May.
It is projected that 25
to 50kms will be walked
each day with the exception of a recovery period
and resupply stop.
Kelvyn Linton’s
portion of the walk will
be 19 days, concluding at
Latrobe High School on
Monday 20 April.
Mr Linton will continue walking solo for the
remaining 800kms.
Three world records
will be attempted: the
youngest person to walk
across Tasmania, the first
father/son team to walk
across Tasmania and
the first person to walk
around the perimeter of
Tasmania.
“I hope as many
people can come and
say hello to me as I walk
through the towns on
the route schedule,” Mr
Linton said.
“But more importantly, to be at Bruny
Island to welcome me as
I complete this historical
walk.”
Mr Linton will be
blogging daily on www.

TASMANIA’S leading
work health and safety
team IPM Safety has a
new home, making the
bold move to a larger
modern facility in the
industrial hub at Mornington.
Starting from humble
beginnings, IPM Safety
has grown over the past
17 years to become a
leader in the industry,
providing the best work
health and safety services in Tasmania as well as
across Australia.
IPM Safety founder
and director Martyn
Bradfield said the team
was geared up to celebrate the business’ new
chapter, with Treasurer
and Workplace Relations
Minister Peter Gutwein
set to take a tour of the
new facility at an official
opening ceremony later
this month.
“It is of great significance for IPM Safety
to have Treasurer Peter
Gutwein attend the
opening ceremony for
our new facility,” he
said.
“Our new space
is fitted with modern
resources specifically
designed for business
operations in the digital
age, so it is a great
privilege for us to show
the treasurer how much
our business has grown
and what we hope to
achieve for the future of
work health and safety
in Tasmania.
“Consistent with our
motto ‘Work Safe - Enjoy Life’, our new premises have allowed us
to create a better team
environment for our
18 staff members, and
the facility’s open-plan
design allows the easy
delivery of all our services, from work health
and safety consultation
and auditing, through to
injury management and
ergonomics, to asbestos
risk management and
occupational hygiene.”
Working in a paint
factory from a young
age, Mr Bradfield saw
the detrimental effects of unsatisfactory
work health and safety
practices and decided
he wanted to make a
difference.
“Seeing the longterm effects of solvent
exposure at the paint
factory I used to work at
was very disheartening,”
he said.
“I took an opportunity to make a difference,
which is what I love
most about what we
do – identifying ways
of making workplaces
safe environments for all
Tasmanians.”
Now looking to the
future, Mr Bradfield said
IPM Safety was eager to
support the next generation of working professionals in Tasmania.
“We are continually looking for young
graduates who specialise
in areas such as science,
engineering and health
science,” he said.
“At IPM Safety, we
recognise that the youth
are the future of our industry and we are proud
to support young people
to become qualified professional Tasmanians.
“Since 1998, IPM
Safety has assisted
hundreds of Tasmanian
businesses to become
safer and more compliant with WHS laws with
the aim of ensuring that
all Tasmanians return
home safely at the end
of their working day to
their loved ones.”

Hobart celebrates

ONE hundred is a very
special number for Hobart Legacy.
This year, not only
will the organisation
commemorate the Centenary of ANZAC but
three of its widows will
turn 100 years old.
To celebrate the
milestone birthdays of
Doreen Hodgman, Dot
Shields and Effie Matthews, Hobart Legacy
held a special morning
tea in March.
President Peter
Hodge hosted the event
which honoured the
women and their unique
stories.
“On behalf of Hobart
Legacy and Legacy
Australia, we wish these
ladies a very happy birthday,” he said.
Born on 21 October
1915, Ms Shields met
her husband, John, at the
start of World War II.
“Shortly after their
wedding, John was
posted to Darwin in the

Dot, that was ‘separation’.
“Dot has been a
Legacy widow since
1994 and at 99 years-ofage, she lives in her own
home, which her daughter tells me is spotless.”
Ms Matthews was
born on 4 September
1915 and met “the love
of her life”, Laurie, at
Hobart’s old Belvedere
dancing studio when
he was in the Navy
Reserves.
“When the war came
Laurie went to Point
Cook for a year’s training
as a radio operator,” Mr
Hodges said.
“He was placed at
Geraldton until 1945 but
Effie, who was engaged,
waited for him and
they married in January
1946.”
Ms Hodgman was
born on 16 October
1915 and met her husband, Jeffery, in 1939.
“Dot and Jeff married
before he went to the
Middle East as a member
of the Second Eighth
Field Regiment in 1940,”
Mr Hodge said.
“Doreen and Jeff’s
first child, Michael, was
born in 1941 and Jeff
did not see him for three
years.
“After returning from
the desert Jeff went on
to serve in Borneo and
Doreen went to work as
a governess and then a
nurse.”

National pies
heading to every
state and territory
NATIONAL pastry products will soon be available
in all states and territories
thanks to a relationship it
has struck with Countrywide Food Service Distributors.
Tasmanian Bakeries’
CEO Shaun Hancock said
the Countrywide distribution network comprised
128 distribution centres
around Australia, servicing
cafes and restaurants,
clubs and pubs, hotels
and motels, schools, takeaway outlets and caterers.
“Initially, 28 of our
pastry products will be
available through the
Countrywide network,
including our National
Pie,” he said.
“In addition we also
have a hugely exciting
range in development
that we will introduce
Australia wide later this
year.
“We estimate we
will start with 10 pallets
a week, growing to 30
pallets a week within 12
to 18 months, in a deal
that potentially is worth
more than $4 million to
the company, our team
and, really importantly,
our local suppliers.
“As a company we
believe wholeheartedly in
Tasmania and are thrilled
to have secured this avenue to deliver our ‘simple
way’ of enjoying the best
of Tasmania, to the rest of
the country.”
Mr Hancock said that
over the past three years
the company had made
inroads into the Victorian
market and had also been
working with customers
in South Australia and
Queensland.
“Through Countrywide we are targeting a
significant increase in our
‘off-island’ sales and are
very positive about the
likely follow-on benefits
for all of our Tasmanian
stakeholders,” he said.
“While we have
started to send some
product interstate via the
Countrywide network,
we expect it will increase
substantially after our
team introduced National
Pies to Countrywide
members at their annual
conference at the end of
February.
“In fact, we have already taken our first order
to send pies to Western
Australia.”
Mr Hancock said
production at its Hobart
bakery would increase
significantly over the next
12 to 18 months.
“We have always
supported Tasmanian
farmers and suppliers and
will continue to do so as
our business expands into
new interstate markets,”
he said.

TasTAFE helps students Star ratings
system
pursue tourism passion
TasTAFE Drysdale graduate Brigitte Shelton, of Sandy Bay, completed an Advanced Diploma in
Tourism/Travel and Hospitality in 2014.
THE achievements of
almost 6000 TasTAFE
students who received
a qualification in 2014
were celebrated at graduation ceremonies last
month.
The graduation
ceremony held at Wrest
Point Casino on 5 March
celebrated the achievements of 2700 students
in southern Tasmania
who received a certification through TasTAFE
in 2014, ranging from
Certificate I to Advanced
Diploma qualifications.
Sandy Bay’s Brigitte
Shelton was among the
graduates.
Ms Shelton completed an Advanced Diploma in Tourism/Travel and
Hospitality with TasTAFE
Drysdale in 2014 and
Advanced Diploma in
Event Management in
Sydney.
She is now studying a
Bachelor of Business majoring in Tourism at the
University of Tasmania
(UTAS).
Due to a unique
partnership between
TasTAFE and UTAS, Advanced Diploma in Travel
and Tourism students
can accelerate to the
university and complete
the Bachelor of Business
degree within two years.
During 2014, Ms
Shelton was named Skal
International Hobart
Club Student of the Year
at the Tasmanian Tourism
Awards.
As part of her prize
she will participate in the
Skal International Hobart
Club student exchange,
travelling to Denmark
later this year to experience the diversity of
the international tourism
industry.
“Winning the award
was the most exciting
moment in my life, to
know that the hard work
and dedication I have
put into my studies and
these industries has been
recognised,” Ms Shelton
said.
“It is so exciting
to think that at such a
young age someone can
achieve so much.
“I hope that I can be
a role model for those
coming through the same
pathway as me to study
tourism.
“I am so excited for
the journey to Europe
and cannot wait to create
new experiences and
learn new aspects of the
industry.”
Ms Shelton completed a Certificate III in
Events, Certificate III in
Tourism and Certificate
IV in Tourism before undertaking her Advanced
Diploma.
She said the practical
nature of the courses was
a real highlight of her
TasTAFE experience.
“It was the best,” she
said. “Everything is really
hands-on and that sort of
practical approach gives
you such a valuable experience along the way.”
As part of the Drysdale Advanced Diploma
course, students had the
opportunity to organise
their own events from
start to finish including
planning, marketing and
running the event on the
day.
Ms Shelton took on
the task of organising the
Tasmanian MicroBrew
Fest, which showcased
the products of 11 local
beer and cider producers
at Hobart’s Princes Wharf
No.1 (PW1).
“It was a big task,”
Ms Shelton said. “I feel
as though if I had come
straight out of university
and had to organise that
I wouldn’t have known
what to do, but because
of the practical nature
of the Drysdale courses
I had studied I knew
exactly what I needed
to do.
“All of the teachers
and staff were there to
support me – it was like
a big family.”
Ms Shelton said after
completing her university
degree she hoped to travel and gain experience
abroad.
“With this I want to
implement the skills into
the Tasmanian industry
to improve our tourism
across the state,” she said.
“I hope to be able to
teach others and provide
my experience and
knowledge to those who
are equally as passionate
about tourism.”

A birthday month to remember Introducing
NORTH Hobart Veterinary Hospital (NHVH)
is celebrating birthday
number two in its new
premises by dubbing
April its “birthday
month”.
Originally located
in Tasma Street since
its establishment in the
1950s, NHVH moved
to a new location to
accommodate expansion
and a growing client
base.
“After several renovations there was just no
more room to expand
and with our evolving
client base and our ever
expanding services it was
obvious that we needed
a new building,” NHVH
director Dr Maree Richards said.
“After an extensive
search, some land was
purchased near our previous home and in 2012,
building of the new
NHVH commenced.”
NHVH’s new home
opened on 28 April
2013 and the extra
room has allowed the
business to extend its
services further, including a cat only waiting

Jennifer Cormack said a

allowed them to provide
surgical services of the
highest standard.
“We have more consult rooms which means
that stressed animals can
spend some quiet time
before their appoint-

“I also really love the
couches in the consulting rooms as they

Are there flaws in
your pelvic floor?
By Jo Cordell Cooper*
THE pelvic floor is not
something everyone feels
comfortable talking about.
We know it is there
and we assume like any
other muscle if it is not
strong there will be consequences.
The pelvic floor is a
sling of muscles in the
base of your pelvis that
holds your organs in
place.
Pelvic floor issues affect one in three women.
Weakness in the pelvic
floor area is often linked
to pregnancy and childbirth, but men can have
pelvic floor problems too
- one in four men, in fact.
Here are a few symptoms that might leave you
wondering if your pelvic
floor is less healthy than it
could be:
• Leaking urine unexpectedly or sneeze then
leak, cough then leak
(stress incontinence).
• Passing wind unexpectedly.
• Feeling the urge “to go”
when you have just
been (urge incontinence).
• Feeling a saggy sensation in the pelvic floor.
• Lower back pain.
• Pelvic instability issues.
If you have any or
several of these symptoms you may have a
weak pelvic floor.
One way you can
improve your pelvic floor
is to do some pelvic floor
exercises.
Firstly, you can close
off the sphincter muscles
around the anus and
bladder (and the birth
canal if you are female),
and then lift the sling of
muscles around them
forward and toward the
heart.
Then you can elevate
the pelvic floor and hold
for three seconds, and
rest for three seconds.
Repeat eight to 10 times.
Lifts for longer periods
may also be suitable.
You should feel the
pelvic floor muscles lift
and lower at the start and
end of the exercise.
It is important not
to tense or lift eyebrows
or shoulders, and do
not squeeze your “glute”
muscles.
Abdominal bracing
is commonly used in
fitness circles as a way of
protecting the back, however, you may be pushing
down through the pelvic
floor to achieve this.
If you have pelvic
floor weakness then
abdominal bracing could
be making it worse, as the
weakest place will flex
and give.
There are physiotherapists who specialise in
pelvic floor training. If
you are concerned, this
might be a good option.
Ask your fitness professional if they are Pelvic
Floor First trained before
asking for their opinion.
Visit www.pelvicfloorfirst.
org.au/ for a range of
useful information. This
website also has a link to
download a Pelvic Floor
First app.
Many people believe
that the symptoms they
have are permanent and
the result of birthing
or ageing. While these
symptoms might be
common, you can always
improve your pelvic floor
health.

Heart Foundation gets
‘red-y’ to raise awareness
THE next few months
will be an extremely busy
time for the Heart Foundation, which is hosting
a variety of events and
activities to raise awareness about heart disease
- starting with National
Heart Week in May.
Heart Week - 3-9 May
The key message for
National Heart Week
2015 is “get active” encouraging everyone
to “move more” and “sit
less”.
Heart Week is a
timely reminder that
heart disease can often
be prevented through
lifestyle changes.
Being active every
day is a great way to help
reduce the risk of it.
In Tasmania 69 per
cent of adults do not do
enough physical activity.
Walking for just
30 minutes a day can
help maintain a healthy
weight, increase fitness
and strength, improve
self esteem and mental
health, and cut the risk of
heart disease by as much
as 30 per cent.
Hobart residents are
invited to join a Heart
Foundation walking
group in their area or
start their own, with
close to 100 groups
across the state already
formed.

Go Red for Women
cocktail event - 12 May
Hobart residents are
invited to help launch
the Go Red for Women
campaign with a special
cocktail event and fashion parade at the Henry
Jones IXL Atrium.
The Go Red campaign helps to raise
awareness about heart
disease, which is the
single biggest killer of
Australian women.
Three times as many
women die from heart
disease than breast
cancer, claiming 25 lives
every day.
“There is no single
cause of heart disease,
but risk factors like high
blood pressure, high cholesterol, being a smoker
and being physically inactive increase your chance
of developing it,” Heart
Foundation cardiovascular health director Gillian
Mangan said.
“While we are making great progress with
raising awareness of heart
disease, there is still quite
a way to go.
“We need funds to
continue our work and
research into prevention,
management and treatment of heart disease.”
Go Red for Women
Day will be held on 11
June.

Free forum to discuss palliative
care options in twilight years
IT’S something none of
us like to think about let
alone talk about and plan
for, but imagine if as you
approached the end of
your life, you couldn’t
speak for yourself. Would
your loved ones know
what your wishes were
for your remaining days
or upon your passing?
These are the big
questions to consider
towards the twilight of
your life - things like
life-prolonging treatments
and accommodation and
organ donation upon
your passing.
And there are the
little things that make
you individual that would
be good for carers to
know were you unable
to communicate. For
instance, you have three
sugars in your coffee;
you always wake at 5am;
the dog always sleeps on
your bed. If you couldn’t
sleep for yourself, who
would?
Sue Leitch, chief
executive of Tasmania’s
Council On The Ageing
(COTA), said many people have strong opinions
about their end-of-life
care, but they fail to
share their wishes with
their loved ones while
they are able to.
“In the past 12
months we have heard
many stories from family
members struggling to
come to terms with
the death of an elderly
parent because of a lack
of understanding of the
palliative care system and
process,” she said.
To avoid this heartache and uncertainty,
Mrs Leitch suggests
that families broach this
subject while their parent
has the mental capacity
to advise their preferences.
COTA Tas with the
support of the Tasmanian
Association for Hospice
and Palliative Care (TAHPC) is holding a forum in
April to discuss palliative
care and end-of-life
issues.
The meeting will
feature short presentations from palliative care
specialists followed by
dinner table discussions.
The session will be
held at Elizabeth Street
Food and Wine Co on
Wednesday 22 April
from 5.30pm to 7.30pm.
COTA encourages people aged 50 and over to
attend and bring along a
family member or friend
who might assist them
to achieve their wishes
when the time comes.
A light dinner will
be served at no cost to
attendees. Places are

New multi-disciplinary
‘health hub’ now open
From left, Bellerive Quay Health Hub managing director/nurse practitioner Lisa Sproule, executive assistant Kate Stanwix and practice manager Ros Luck.
TASMANIA’s first multi-disciplinary multi-dimensional “health hub”
is now open on Hobart’s
Eastern Shore.
The new Bellerive
Quay Health Hub,
located in the Bellerive
Quay building, has been
developed by nurse practitioner Lisa Sproule who
has more than 30 years’
experience in private and
public health, both locally
and interstate.
Over time Ms
Sproule found that
patient care, particularly
in the area of chronic disease was reactive rather
than proactive.
She said the importance of caring for her
patients holistically - as
opposed to managing a
disease reactively - grew
apparent when she
transitioned into general
practice.
“Fragmentation of
health care services and
a lack of communication
between each of these
providers leaves the
patient feeling both bewildered and confused.
“Patients have an understanding of the health
care providers they may
need to see on a regular
basis to stay healthy, but
accessing those services
means tracking them
down and then driving all
over the city.
“Identifying and coordinating the health care
priorities for their health
are also often beyond the
consumer’s reach.
“Patients knew what
they ‘should do’ and yet
seemed unable to do it.
While medical and lifestyle advice is obviously
an essential component
of any illness prevention
management program, it
was clear that more was
needed.
“So I developed

seamless one-stop multi-disciplinary health care

Ms Sproule said the
health hub, which comprises a team of diverse
health professionals,
was a marriage between
conventional medicine
and complementary
medicine.
“There is not one
perfect fit for one patient,
and health care programs
must be designed to

Ms Sproule said.

A free back pain assessment
for Observer readers
By Alex Stevens
(Hobart Osteopathic
Clinic)
IT is more than likely
that you, or someone
you know, has experienced back pain.
Back pain is extremely common, yet it
receives little sympathy
from people until they
have experienced it
themselves.
It can range from the
occasional “niggle” to
incapacitating pain, and
while it will not kill you,
it can certainly torture
you.
Back pain can clear
up in a few days without
treatment, or it can drag
on for months or years
- even with treatment.
It can come on after a
traumatic event, such
as a fall or an accident,
after lifting something
that is too heavy or too
awkward, or it can be
triggered for no reason
at all.
It may be accompanied by neck pain, headaches and occasionally,
a pain shooting down
the leg.
However, no matter
what you do, you may
not be able to avoid a
“back attack”, but you
can prevent or minimise episodes of back
Ms Sproule said the
programs were designed
to work hand-in-hand
with general practitioners to help address the
underlying causes of
illness and as a result,
maintain patient wellness
while monitoring chronic
illnesses.
“The Bellerive Quay
Health Hub represents
a real change in care
delivery from the current
reactive medical model
to a proactive, preventative health oriented way
of delivering care to both
the local population and
rural and remote areas of
Tasmania,” she said.
pain by seeking regular,
non-traumatic exercise.
This can include walking,
swimming, cycling, yoga,
tai chi, pilates, golf or
tennis.
When you are affected by back pain, your
doctor will probably
prescribe you with either
a painkiller and/or an
anti-inflammatory tablet.
They might tell you
to rest or keep active
depending on how
the pain is. If you can,
you should still move
around.
Applying heat can
be helpful, but applying
alternate heat and cold
packs, one minute each,
is better as this will help
with both muscle spasm
and inflammation. Heat
alone can make inflammation worse even
though it feels good
while it is applied.
If back pain is not
going away, it is time to
see an osteopath, and
it could not come at a
more perfect time as
Osteopathy Awareness
Week will be held from
19 to 25 April.
Osteopaths are
“hands-on” practitioners
who treat all areas of the
musculoskeletal system
including shoulders,
elbows, hips, knees and
feet.
We also treat a
whole lot of people who
experience back pain.
Osteopaths seek
out the underlying
reason for your recurring
episodes of back pain
or the reason why your
back is just not clearing
up.
We help to resolve
these problems with a
variety of techniques,
as well as giving you
advice or exercises for
posture and address
home and work factors
that may be affecting
your back.
Because many
people have not heard
of osteopathy before
and might not be sure
whether osteopathy
could be helpful, the
Hobart Osteopathic

The assessments will

THE Return Services
League (RSL) ANZAC
Flame has made its symbolic journey across the
country in preparation
for Centenary of ANZAC commemorations.
The Tasmanian flame
has arrived in Hobart
ahead of the Dedication
of the Flame of Remembrance which will
take place at the Hobart
Cenotaph on Wednesday
25 April.
The RSL ANZAC
Flame was lit in Albany,
Western Australia in September 2014 by Corporal Daniel Keighran VC
where 11,410 soldiers
sailed for World War
One (WWI) and Gallipoli
a century ago.
It then travelled
to the Australian War
Memorial in Canberra
where it was passed onto
20 RSL representatives
from around the country
at a ceremony on 14
February.
The Dedication of
the Flame of Remembrance is just one of
seven special Hobart
events recognising the
Centenary of ANZAC.
For the first time, all
members of the community will be encouraged to participate in a
Centenary of ANZAC
event by recreating the
1915 “coo-ee” recruiting
march.
The march will
commence after the
main commemorations
at the cenotaph and will
progress to Waterman’s
Dock in Sullivans Cove.
At the dock,
marchers will throw a
poppy into the water in
memory of the nearly
2,500 Tasmanians who
left for WWI and never
returned.
“During the Centenary of ANZAC in
Hobart we will remember not only the original
ANZACs who served at
Gallipoli and the Western
Front but commemorate
more than a century of
service by Australian
servicemen and women,”
Hobart Deputy Lord
Mayor Ron Christie said.
“This year we are
especially focused on
community participation
in the commemorations
including the Community Gunfire breakfast
at Princes Wharf No. 1
(PW1) and the public
coo-ee march from the
cenotaph to Waterman’s
Dock at approximately
1pm, followed by war
memorabilia displays at
PW1.
“While the main
parade is a tribute to
veterans and their families, the coo-ee march is
something that everyone
can be a part of.”
Hobart ANZAC
Day Commemorative
Committee chair colonel
Mike Romalis said that
every Australian was a
living part of the nation’s
ANZAC heritage.
“On 25 April 2015
the RSL and Hobart
City Council are making
sure that everyone in
our community has the
chance to participate in
a Centenary of ANZAC
event,” he said.

AS autumn is now
upon us, offshore
fishing has never been
better and boy, has the
tuna been on the bite
statewide both late last
month and into April.
Catches have been
reported around Tasmania and while there
have been no major
“ripper” records, the
sizes and numbers have
been plentiful in both
striped and albacore,
with even the report
of kingfish off the east
coast of St Helens.
Hotspots are
located on the Tasman
Peninsula (Eaglehawk
Neck, Fortescue Bay,
Tasman Island and for
those after big trumpeter – the shelf), between
Schouten Island and
Taillefer Rocks, and
further north.
Great catches have
ben reported around
St Helens Island, with
the added bonus of a
possible kingfish hook
up as well.
Other great areas
to head off include
Adventure Bay Bruny
Island, where arrow and
calamari are reportedly
in some of the best
numbers seen for many
years. However, be
prepared to lose some
gear to the couta.
Bruny locals have
reported seeing the
couta in huge schools
from the foreshore and
roadside on the way in
to Adventure Bay. On
the flip side, if couta is
your target for some fun
for the kids, the sizes
are averaging between
1500 millimetres to
2000mm. It has been
several years since such
big couta has made an
appearance in large
schools.
Are your trailer
lights working?
This month’s safety tip
is about trailer lights not only for your boat
trailer but your caravan,
box trailer, car trailer or
anything that has lights
connecting to your car.
It is imperative you
regularly check your
trailer lights are working
as we approach the end
of daylight savings.
When heading
home from a great
fishing day, the last thing
you need is someone
running into the back
of you.
Boat trailers, especially as they are in and
out of saltwater and
have a higher chance
of corroded lights and
wiring or faulty plugs,
can be an endless task
to keep working.
LED lights are now
the preferred lighting
system as they are
brighter, sealed and use
less energy.
However, “cheap

will not last long, so
ensure you purchase a
quality set which should

THE National Stroke
Foundation will host
Australia’s Biggest Blood
Pressure Check, delivering free health checks at
Elizabeth Street Mall in
Hobart.
On Wednesday 6
May the Foundation
aims to check the blood
pressure of 15,000
people around Australia
to increase the awareness of the link between
high blood pressure and
stroke.
Tasmanians are
among the Australians
at greatest risk of stroke.
“It is vital that we
understand our stroke
risk and what we can do
to reduce it,’’ National
Stroke Foundation Tas-
mania executive officer
Connie Digolis said.
“High blood pressure
is the most important
known risk factor for
stroke,” she said.
“Shockingly, more
than 101,000 Tasmanians are living with high
blood pressure putting
them at serious risk of
stroke and many don’t
know it.
“High blood pressure is one of the most
important known risk
factors for stroke that
you can change, which
is why Australia’s Biggest
Blood Pressure Check is
so important.
“Tasmanians suffered
more than 1,300 strokes
last year, making it one
of the worst affected
states by population.
“I encourage Hobart
locals to come down
to Elizabeth Mall on
Wednesday 6 May to
take a quick and easy
health check - it will
only take a couple of
minutes and it may save
your life.”
Australia’s Biggest
Blood Pressure health
checks will be carried
out by a health professional and will include
blood pressure and a
diabetes risk assessment.
Those at risk will be
referred to their doctor
for advice on how to
lower their risk and stay

Challenging the ‘me generation’ myth
VOLUNTEERING Tasmania and the University of Tasmania (UTAS)
are working together to
show the many ways
young people give back
to the community.
The organisations
are raising awareness
of youth community
participation through an
Instagram competition
called “Random Snaps
of Kindness” ahead
of this year’s National
Youth Week (10-19
April).
“Young volunteers
give an average of
12.5 hours a month to
benefit our community,”
Volunteering Tasmania
chief executive officer
Adrienne Picone said.
“Our goal is to give
those hard workers the
recognition they deserve
and break down the
myth that young people
don’t demonstrate care
for others or give their
time.
“Through working
with UTAS researcher
Dr Nicholas Hookway,
we know that young
people show kindness
every day in many
different ways including
volunteering.”
Tasmanians between
the ages of 13 and
25 years can submit
photographs on Instagram using the hashtag
#kindsnaps and tagging
@volunteeringtas to win
prizes.
The photos should
represent the donation
of time or another act of
kindness, and entrants
are reminded that they
must read the terms
and conditions found at
www.volunteeringtas.

Prizes include iPod
Nanos and gift vouchers.
The images will also
be displayed from 13
to 15 April at both the
Hobart and Launceston

A launch event will
be held for each region
during National Youth
Week.
Entrants from across
Tasmania are eligible to

Blue Jays end season Tasmanian football in
a

own

Victory League players from left, Bobby Eaves, Alex Holmes, Hugh Ludford and Henry Fagg at
the Victory League 2015 season launch.
First-year player Roly Trustum hits out for the Hotel Soho Hobart Blue Jays against the Athletics. Photo credit: Naomi Searle
By David Searle
SINCE my last report,
the 2014/15 Hobart
Summer Baseball League
(HSBL) roster games
have concluded and the
Hotel Soho Hobart Blue
Jays were unfortunate to
narrowly miss out on the
finals.
After their tough loss
to the Dragons, the Blue
Jays took on the Eastern
Athletics and battled for
the last spot in the finals.
Initially this was
a pitchers’ duel with
Peter Hubble (Jays) and
Andrew “Sully” Sullivan
(Athletics) dominating
the opposing bats.
After the Athletics
had scored three runs in
the bottom of the fourth
innings to take a 3-1
lead, the Jays rallied with
four runs of their own in
the top of the fifth, with
Josh Byrne, Hubble, Ryan
Oakley and Roly Trustum
each scoring a run.
The Athletics responded with two runs
in the bottom of the
fifth to tie the scores, but
once again, the Jays’ bats
bounced back immediately to score three runs
in the top of the sixth
- walks and hit batters
not helping the Athletics’
cause.
A three-run home
run by the Athletics’
Stuart Robins tied things
up once again, but in the
top of the seventh, David
Wenban stole home to
score the go-ahead run
and the Blue Jays hung
on to win 9-8.
For the Jays, Shutt
had two hits from three
at bats and Steve Millington went two from two,
as did teenager Brendan
Wenban.
The following game
saw the Jays “at home” to
the Northern White Sox
and when they jumped
out to an early 9-3 lead,
the Jays looked to be
coasting.
The big innings had
been the second with six
runs crossing the plate,
first-year player Roly
Trustum and lead-off
batter Zac Shutt each
driving in two runs.
Slowly but surely,
the Sox reduced the lead
and when they scored
five runs in the top of the
fifth, they had amazingly
taken a 10-9 lead.
Peter Hubble stole
home to tie the game
up in the bottom of the
fifth, but after the Sox
regained the lead in
the top of the sixth, the
Jays were unable to put
together anything in the
bottom of that innings
and it was their turn to
lose a close one - 11-10.
For the Jays, Hubble
had two from three, and
along with Shutt and
Dave Coad, scored two
runs apiece
With a victory in
their next game against
the Dragons, the Jays
could go a long way to
clinching their spot in the
finals.
Despite a promising
start with two runs in the
top of the first innings,
the Jays soon found
themselves in a hole as
the Dragons led 6-2 after
two innings, the lead having blown out to 9-3 by
the end of five innings.
The Jays rallied somewhat with three runs in
the top of the sixth but
were unable to get any
closer and eventually lost
10-6.
For the Jays, Michael
Hegarty and Evan Toms
had two hits from three
at bats and Ian Wood
had two hits from two at
bats. Toms also drove in
three runs.
So it was that a place
in the finals came down
to the Jays’ last game of
the season against the
Eastern Athletics and
what a cracker of a game
it was.
The Athletics jumped
out to an early 2-0 lead,
but for the first four
innings, it was primarily
another pitchers’ duel
between Hubble and
Sully.
The Jays got on the
board in the third when
Hubble drove in Trustum
and took the lead in the
top of the fifth, courtesy of runs scored by
Brendan Wenban and
Brad Howlett.
The Jays loaded the
bases with one out in the
top of the sixth but were
unable to score any runs.
This would ultimately
prove fatal as the Athletics scored the tying run
in the bottom of that
innings and the winning
run in the bottom of the
eighth.
The Blue Jays are to
be commended on a
very good season highlighted by the “blooding”
of many new players, a
never-say-die attitude and
their team sponsorship
with Hotel Soho.
Its team members
were so dedicated that
rarely would they have
less than 12 players present, and it was a credit to
team manager Michael
Hegarty that he was able
to juggle these numbers
so that all players had a
fair go on the field.
On behalf of Baseball
Tasmania and the Hotel
Soho Hobart Blue Jays, I
would like to wish Jacob
Stump a speedy recovery
from his arm operation.

FOOTBALL Federation
Tasmania has officially
launched the 2015 Victory League season with
members from all eight
clubs and more than
100 guests in Hobart on
Sunday 15 March.
The Victory League,
which is the top tier
statewide competition
for soccer in Tasmania, is
entering its third season.
Football Federation
Tasmania chief executive
officer Mike Palmer said
the first two seasons of
the league had been “an
overwhelming success.”
“The competition has
produced some amazing
results on and off the
pitch,” he said.
“Soccer is in a really
strong position in Tasmania now and much of this
has to be put down to
the Victory League.”
The Speaker of
Tasmania’s House of
Assembly, Elise Archer
MP, was a guest speaker
at the launch.
The self-confessed
football fan said the
Victory League was really
gaining momentum in
Tasmania.
“This season promises
to be a thrilling one for
players and spectators,”
Ms Archer said.
“Since it was established in 2013, the competition has seen bumper
game attendances, a
strengthened standard of
play and increased pathways for players to go on
to elite football, and so
it is an exciting time for
football in Tasmania.”
South Hobart Football Club will be aiming
to secure a trifecta this
season after winning the
first two finals titles.

St Mary’s College represents on the pitch in 2015
From left, St Mary’s College students Claudia Mathewson, Chloe Cooper, Keely Hine-Haycock, Ella Berresford, Livinia Sproule and Julia Gunn will represent Tasmania in the under 15 state hockey squad.
THERE must be something in the water at St
Mary’s College (SMC)
with the school this year
celebrating its largest
number yet of state representatives for underage
hockey.
Four SMC students
have been selected in
the under 15 Tasmanian
hockey team for 2015
and an additional two
have been picked as
“train-ons”.
The talented St
Mary’s crew comprises
Livinia Sproule, Julia
Gunn, Chloe Cooper
and Claudia Matthewson, with train-ons Ella
Berresford and Keely
Hine-Haycock.
St Mary’s College
health and physical education coordinator Kate
Lakos said the school
had a wealth of talent in
hockey this year, as well
as across other sporting
codes.
“We are having a ‘hot
streak’ with hockey - last
year St Mary’s had five
girls selected in the under
14 state hockey team,
along with students in
the under 12, 15 and 18
state teams,” she said.
“We also had Annabelle Scutt selected in
the under 17 Australian
hockey team who is looking forward to playing an
international tournament
in Europe this May.”
A passion for hockey
runs in the family for
state representative Miss
Sproule. Her father, Dan-
iel Sproule, played for the
Australian Kookaburras
team previously, winning
dual Olympic medals.
Four of the six SMC
girls in the state squad
also play for OHA
Hockey Club, where Miss
Sproule occupies a key
role as a playing coach
for the men’s a-grade
team.
St Mary’s College
principal Tom Dorey said
the impressive tally of
state representatives in
sport was not just limited
to hockey.
“In 2014 more than
30 St Mary’s College
students played in
national tournaments for
everything from water
polo and basketball to
golf and outrigger canoeing,” he said.
“St Mary’s College
students are known for
going one pace beyond
in all endeavours and it
is certainly showing with
their efforts on the sports
field.”
