the well-known lock at Ternaaien, where the difference in water
level is no less than 15m. The boat trip to the historic inner harbour
of ‚t Bassin, on the cruise boat MPS ‚Jekervallei‘ is a nostalgic cruise
experience, and the one-hour long cruise on the Meuse is a comfortable
way to become acquainted with the lively city of Maastricht.

A city which is exuberant by nature;
made all the more so by its international
students and visitors. A city where
impressive historic highlights intermingle
with modern innovative concepts. A city
with a prime position on the knowledge
axis which is becoming increasingly
important for business visitors. A city
which seems to keep growing in size
thanks to the countless possibilities
of the surrounding hill country and
of neighbouring cities in Belgium and
Germany. Which, thanks to its mix of
nature, culture, and architecture, makes
every visit unforgettable. In short, a city
just waiting to be discovered!

MAASTRICHT
THE
NETHERLANDS’
MOST EUROPEAN
CITY
INTERNATIONAL, ORIGINAL,
DYNAMIC, HOSPITABLE, AND AUTHENTIC
Maastricht is one of the Netherlands’ most European and international cities. You can feel
it, see it, and taste it. It’s a place with an authentic energy and dynamism that you won’t
experience anywhere else in the Netherlands. Its mix of cultures, languages, and flavours
makes the city burst with creativity, research, enterprise, and culinary delights. Discover
all these things together with your friends, family, colleagues, or business contacts. During
a wine tasting session, a guided tour of the caves, a Restaurant Crawl through the city,
an active cycling tour of the surrounding countryside, or a business meeting in one of our
historic hotspots. Simply choose the activity to suit your group and the purpose of your
visit. It makes no difference when or why you are visiting Maastricht and with whom
– in Maastricht, you can always be assured of an unforgettable stay.
6 — Maastricht — THE NETHERLANDS’ MOST EUROPEAN CITY
7 — Maastricht — THE NETHERLANDS’ MOST EUROPEAN CITY
MUST DO!
Maastricht is a compact city. All its
hotspots are a short stroll away, are
easy to find, and easy to get to, even
for large groups.
From snow-covered slopes, hikes
through hill country, and wine tasting
sessions to caves. There are plenty
of opportunities, in both the city and
surrounding area.
Maastricht’s location in the heart of
Europe means it is very easy to get
to - by car or train, or by plane from
various international airports forming
a ring around Maastricht.
INTERNATIONAL
ALLURE
For years, Maastricht has been
labelled the ‘Gastronomic capital’ of
the Netherlands. You’re in the right
place for a relaxed and mouth-watering
dining experience. But Maastricht is
so much more than this. The arrival
of the university, some 40 years ago,
gave the city its international charm.
Whereas you’d previously hear mainly
Flemish and German being spoken
around you, it’s no longer surprising
to hear four or five different languages
on any given day. International students,
business visitors, and tourists alike
add colour and an energetic mix to
the city. Furthermore, the university’s
various faculties are housed in mag
nificent historic buildings which are
carefully maintained in tiptop condition
and are open for viewing during the
Arts & Heritage tour. You can book a
Dutch or foreign student or graduate
to give you a guided tour of the city,
looking at it through their eyes. Would
you prefer a little more history? Then
opt for a highlights tour, a tour of
buildings which have been converted
for other purposes, or an architectural
walk accompanied by a local guide.
They will be happy to regale you with
all their tales.
FROM INDUSTRIAL
CITY TO CENTRE OF
EXPERTISE
Not only has the university given Maastricht international allure, it has also
transformed it from an industrial city
to a centre of expertise. There is good
reason why Maastricht is becoming
increasingly popular as a conference
city and attracting a greater number of
business visitors. The venues that can
accommodate these business gatherings
are capitalizing on this trend by offering
groups, large or small, a tailor-made
welcome. From the official conference
and exhibition centre MECC Maastricht
to compact châteaux, country houses,
wine cellars, and everything in between.
MAASTRICHT REGION
Spend the morning in Liège, the
afternoon in Aachen, and the evening
in Maastricht. You can do it all in a day.
Similarly, you can swap the pistes of
SnowWorld for a tour of Maastricht’s
underground passageways and a
wine tasting session on an estate in
Limburg’s hill country. That, too, is
possible. And all in a single day. Not
only is Maastricht a city with plenty
of activities and accommodation, it
is also a region offering countless
possibilities. Both in the Netherlands,
against the backdrop of the South
Limburg hills, and in the rest of the
Euregion. The possibilities are boundless.
After Amsterdam, Maastricht has the
most monuments of any city in the
Netherlands.
Thanks to its rich history and remnants
of its industrial heritage, Maastricht
has plenty of unusually charming venues
where you can surprise your guests.
From castles and country estates to
caves and old industrial buildings.
As it is the city with the greatest density
of Michelin-starred restaurants, where
culinary delights and local artisan
producers are more than amply
represented, you won’t have a problem
finding a great place to eat.

„Not to be missed…Maastricht is synonymous with the caves. At least,
that’s what we non-locals think. Our guide Bram told us all about the

Limburg cave network. Experienced
guides from Maastricht Underground
will accompany you and your group
and regale you with their stories. Full
of passion, excitement, and interesting
facts you’ve probably never heard
before. Stories that you and your guests
will not quickly forget and which may
even change your view of history.
The activities of Maastricht Underground do not rely on the latest
technology. Everything you see is
authentic and natural, created over
the years and remaining the same as
always. And this is what makes the past
so beautiful, so real, and so tangible.
FAVOURITE ATTRACTION
For children and adults alike. For
adventure-seekers, sports enthusiasts,
historians, and culture lovers, Maastricht
Underground offers something for
everyone. Many who have been before
you still talk about their wonderful
experience to this day. It’s no surprise
that in 2015 the caves beneath
St. Pietersberg hill were awarded
TripAdvisor’s Certificate of Excellence
for the second year in a row. This
certificate was also awarded to Fort
Sint Pieter. This Certificate of Excellence
is awarded to accommodations,
attractions, and restaurants that
consistently receive high praise from
travellers on the TripAdvisor website.
NATURE RESERVE
When you hear about Maastricht
Underground, the caves and its
passageways are probably what first
spring to mind. However, it offers
more, not only in the way of culture
but also nature. With St. Pietersberg
hill as icon and the ENCI quarry a true
gem, there is still a hive of activity
and environmental development taking
place in and around the cement
factory. This is where marl quarrying
will cease in its entirety in 2018, after
almost 100 years. Until that time, the
area is slowly being developed into a
remarkable nature reserve. However,
it’s already worth a visit. Over the
years, the area has proven to be of
great historical significance. Large
numbers of fossils (including the
Mosasaurus) have been found in the
quarry that give a glimpse of life in
this area millions of years ago. Find
out more during a special tour, which
is often given by former employees of
the ENCI factory. By the end of 2015,
a viewing platform and downward
steps will have been completed to
transport you a million years into the
past with every step you take!
The underground region entices you
to take part in team building activities,
treasure hunts, cycling and kick
scooter tours, walks, or however else
you’d like to explore this hidden world
that is unique in the Netherlands.
From bare to richly coloured caves,
from open quarries to forts, and to the
Kazematten tunnels beneath the city.

TripAdvisor® Traveller Review
„In mid-August 2015 we took a guided
tour on kick scooter of the underground
passageways of St. Pietersberg hill.
Around fifteen of us started the tour
from the Slavante Country House,
which is also highly recommended! The
kick scooters with their large wheels
and hand brakes are ideal for travelling through the corridors, but it does
require some physical effort. As there is
no lighting in the corridors, everyone is
given a lamp to wear. The guide leads
the way and stops at interesting places
en route. Our guide had some great
stories to tell. Now and again, you can
go quite fast which is something the
kids enjoyed doing. During this one
and a half hour tour you come across
other groups on foot and just looking
at their astonished faces makes this
tour worthwhile!“

DOES ORGANIZING
AN OUTING REQUIRE
A LOT OF WORK?
There’s a lot you can see, do,
and experience in just a day in
the city, but it’s not for nothing
that Maastricht has the most
hotels per square metre in
the Netherlands. If you really
want to discover Maastricht,
you’ll need a few more days. In
addition, the city’s favourable
location means you can combine a stay in Maastricht with a
visit to the trendy city of Liège
in Wallonia, the German student
city Aachen, the beauty of the
hilly countryside, or SnowWorld
and GaiaZOO in Parkstad.
Any time at all! In Maastricht,
every season has its own
charms, flavours, events, and
activities. And don’t forget,
you can even sit outside on
the terraces in winter. Want to
avoid the busy periods? Then
come early in the year, making
sure, of course, to avoid Carnival
in February.
It depends on what you are
organizing and whether you
enjoy doing it. Organizing is an
art. It’s what we do best! We
have the right skills, ideas, and
contacts to help you and take
your worries off your hands. From
transport, hotel accommodation,
programmes, and parties, to
catering, participant registration,
scripts, and invitations.

THE LABYRINTH AT
DRIELANDENPUNT
(THREE-COUNTRY POINT)
Find your way in an exciting labyrinth
at the highest point of the Netherlands
where three countries meet! This is
a spectacular and active programme
for young and old! Before the game

the puzzle compass trip. Each team
needs to find the route to follow
with the aid of a compass. Along the
way there will be questions to answer
and you’ll be asked to complete
the following three assignments:
Air gun shooting, following a fun
trail by Segway, and building a
six-metre-high tower from bamboo
sticks. Once you’ve finished the
entire route, you’ll hopefully succeed
in finding and opening the safe!
Followed by prize ceremony.

‘Yesterday, the whole family
took part in the Operation Fort
St Pieter challenge. Marcel was our
guide. We would like to offer our
compliments once again! First,
Marcel told us a brief history of the
fort. He was very knowledgeable,
exuded great enthusiasm, and was
able to answer all our questions
in detail. A true professional! The
activity itself was also great fun.
It was well structured and really
exciting! It was also good that
we were given bottles of water,
as we needed them... We had a
great time in the fort, and I will
definitely be recommending this
activity to others! At the end of
the activity, Marcel took a group
photo of us, and we received it
by e-mail just a few hours later:
it’s a small detail, but it was the
icing on the cake! Thank you,
Marcel!’

‘Everything was absolutely
fantastic! Joyce was marvellous
in the run up to the groups
arrival with assisting us with all
the planning. The guides for
the tours were all excellent and
perfect for the group and the
dinners were equally excellent.
The quality of services is excellent.
The prices for the caves excursion
are fairly high, however this tour
was declared the groups favourite
of the whole trip - so I think it was
worth it!’

HEART
OF EUROPE
There are plenty of places in
Maastricht to sit down to a
complete dinner, taste a selection
of exclusive dishes from the
region, or explore international
cuisines. But if you really want
a taste of Maastricht, then you
must try ‘friet met zoervleis’
(sour meat stew with chips).
Many attempts have been made
to explain what ‘zoervleis’ is. It’s a
bit like stewed meat but different.
It’s best to judge for yourself.
What happens when you combine
knowledge – widely available in
Maastricht as a knowledge centre
with an international university
– with good food? That’s right,
a scientifically sound hamburger!
Cultivated in a laboratory
at Maastricht University by
Professor Mark Post, this piece
of meat reached global news
in 2013.
Whereas you’d previously hear
mainly Flemish and German
being spoken around you, it’s
no longer surprising to hear
four of five different languages
on any given day. Everything
points to Maastricht’s location
in the heart of Europe!

NIGHTMARE
FOR HIGH HEELS
Maastricht’s cobblestones are a
charming sight to see. And they
are in perfect keeping with the
city’s historical character.
However, ladies wearing high
heels would be wise to heed
caution. You know what they
say...a little pain for beauty.
Or just make sure you have a
dashing gentleman by your side.
They are proud of their city
and are keen to show it off
(in a slightly chauvinistic
fashion). They cherish the city’s
rich history and know better
than anyone how to combine
business with pleasure. Who?
The ‘Sjengen’, of course (male
inhabitants of Maastricht).
One would think the Schengen
Agreement had been signed here.
Well, it wasn’t...but the Treaty
of Maastricht was. This was the
birth place of the European
Union and the Euro in 1992.
TEFAF IN
TOWN…
When the world’s biggest art and
antiques fair arrives in Maastricht
in March each year, the entire
city is full of commotion. Private
jets land and take off, limousines
come and go. When the streets
are filled with fur coats, pearls,
and designer handbags, there
are no more hotel beds available
(most guests book their room a
year in advance), and the restaurants are all fully booked... you
know it’s time for TEFAF!

47 — Maastricht — IT WILL LEAVE YOU WANTING MORE
MAASTRICHT
IT WILL
LEAVE YOU
WANTING
MORE
Luxurious dining in style or a more informal ambiance.
A tasting session or an extensive buffet. Dining in the caves,
enjoying a meal in a traditional pub, or sampling tasty treats
in a former fire service canteen. The culinary aspect of your
visit calls for special attention. After all, you’re in Maastricht
- the gastronomic capital of the Netherlands - where you don’t
have to worry about finding a great place to eat.
OLD VERSUS NEW
The best thing about eating out
in Maastricht is that you can mix
and match to your heart’s content
between authentic bistros serving
traditional regional dishes and trendy,
industrial-style restaurants with
innovative creations on the menu.
Get your morning off to a good start
with breakfast at a cosy coffee bar
in the trendy district of Wyck (using
freshly roasted coffee beans from
Blanche Dael), enjoy a lazy lunch in
the former fire service canteen which
has been converted into a trendy
hotspot with a lunch and evening menu
full of unexpected, long-forgotten,
and organic products. Or you could
choose a small selection of dishes
from the international cuisine offered
by Marres Kitchen (the homemade
humus is to die for!) Or go to the
Tapijnkazerne where they are happy
to serve large groups. And in the
evening you can visit one of the old
time favourites to enjoy an extensive
seafood banquet on freshly pressed
linen, or a game menu with wine or
asparagus as you’ll only ever find in
Limburg. Alternatively, opt for a more
informal setting where you can enjoy
a hearty portion of ‘Sjiek’ stewed
meat (at Café Sjiek, where else?),
Belgian-style prawn croquettes, or a
mouth-watering hamburger. And coffee
just wouldn’t be the same without
pralines from one of Maastricht’s
chocolatiers.
YOU CAN ARGUE
ABOUT TASTE
You can definitely argue about matters
of taste. Because when one city
offers you so many flavours, you’re
bound to change your mind. Want to
satisfy a sweet tooth? You can do so
anywhere. Every district has its own
favourite spots for sweet treats. From
afternoon tea, coffee with delicious
carrot cake or a slice of fresh tart
from the Bisschopsmolen in the Jeker
quarter. To real Maastricht grenache
cake at Coffeelovers in Wyck and
freshly-baked pastries and cupcakes
in the centre. Or do you prefer savoury? To try on the spot or to take
home with you to accompany drinks?
How about the sourdough and fig
bread from Le Salonard, where you can
also put together a cheese board for
home, including a slice of Maastricht’s
‘Rommedoe’ cheese. Or you may be
tempted by black pudding with apple
at ‘In den Ouden Vogelstruys’ (the
city’s oldest café) after a busy day
shopping or the increasingly popular
meatballs from Saveurs delicatessen.
We could go on and on, but we
secretly hope these suggestions have
already made your mouth water. We
did warn you: Maastricht leaves you
wanting more.
