Hydroplaning on wet or contaminate runway
Reason
As we aware that the rainy season has just started in Indonesia and leads us to be more
concerned about a hydroplaning phenomenon during landing on wet or contaminated runway. A
statistic data of serious accident as well as accident in Indonesia showed a significant accident
rate.
INACA Operation and Technique, therefore would like to issue a “Safety Notice” as part of our
awareness in promoting a safety among INACA member as well as to alert all Indonesia operators
to the following recommendations.
INACA Recommendation
Airport
- Airport must inform the cockpit crew concerning the 3 (three) categories of “Breaking
Action” that published by ICAO i.e. Good, Medium and Poor in conjunction with landing
on wet or contaminated runway, while in extreme condition with a standing water above 3
(three) millimeter, it shall be declared as “Runway Contaminated”.
Airline
Operation
- Before landing on wet or contaminated runway, pilot must request a breaking action to the
controller in order to determine a landing distance in accordance with Aircraft Flight Manual.
- The cockpit crews have to optimize the usage of the engine thrust reverser system to
maximize aircraft deceleration.
- The cockpit crews have to ensure that reported weather condition and visibility at
destination airport meet their minimum requirement.
- The cockpit crew shall fully comply with manufacture recommendation for landing in wet or
contaminated runway
Technical
- During the rainy season the aircraft shall always be operated with the serviceable antiskid
system
- The remaining tire groves shall be at least 2 mm depth as to minimize the possible of
hydroplaning during landing on wet or contaminated runway
- The tire pressure shall be properly maintained and periodically check as recommended by
aircraft manufacture
