Why do we set off fireworks on the 4th of July?
Because it is what we have always done. In 1777, the first anniversary
of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, Philadelphia and
Boston held massive celebrations that featured fireworks.
The events had all of the elements
of typical future celebrations: the
discharge of cannon (one round for
each state in the union), the ringing
of bells, a dinner, the use of music,
the drinking of toasts, loud huzzas,
a parade, fireworks, and dressing
up of ships in the harbor in red,
white and blue.
The fireworks celebration that night
began and ended with 13 fireworks
being set off from the city’s
commons.

Celebrate safely with these tips from the Nat’l Council of Fireworks Safety
Use fireworks outdoors only
Obey local laws
Always have water handy (a hose or buckets of water)
Alcohol and fireworks do not mix. Have a “designated “shooter
Only use fireworks as intended - Do not alter them or combine them
Only persons over age 12 should be allowed to handle sparklers of any type.
Never re-light a “dud” firework (wait 20 minutes and then soak it in a bucket of water)
Use common sense when using fireworks. Spectators should keep a safe distance from
the shooter. And the shooter should wear safety glasses.
Do not ever use homemade fireworks or illegal explosives; they can kill you! Report
illegal explosives to the fire or police department in your community.

1 (8 ounce) container frozen whipped topping, thawed
1 pint blueberries, rinsed and drained
2 pints fresh strawberries, rinsed and sliced
Prepare cake according to package directions and bake in a 9x13 inch pan. Cool
completely.
Frost cake with whipped topping. Place blueberries in a square in the corner, and
arrange sliced strawberries as stripes to make an American flag. Chill until
serving.

The Story of the Fourth of July
We celebrate American Independence Day on the Fourth of July every year. We
think of July 4, 1776, as a day that represents the Declaration of Independence and
the birth of the United States of America as an independent nation. But July 4,
1776 wasn't the day that the Continental Congress decided to declare
independence (they did that on July 2, 1776). It wasn’t the day we started the
American Revolution either (that had happened back in April 1775). And it wasn't
the day Thomas Jefferson wrote the first draft of the Declaration of Independence
(that was in June 1776). Or the date on which the Declaration was delivered to
Great Britain (that didn't happen until November 1776). Or the date it was signed
(that was August 2, 1776).

question:
What year did Congress declare the
Fourth of July a national holiday?
A. 1777
B. 1870
C. 1826
D. 1776
So what did happen on July 4, 1776? The Continental Congress approved the final
wording of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776. They'd been working
on it for a couple of days after the draft was submitted on July 2nd and finally
agreed on all of the edits and changes.

July 4, 1776, became the date that was included on the Declaration of
Independence, and the fancy handwritten copy that was signed in August (the copy
now displayed at the National Archives in Washington, D.C.) It’s also the date that
was printed on the Dunlap Broadsides, the original printed copies of the
Declaration that were circulated throughout the new nation. So when people
thought of the Declaration of Independence, July 4, 1776 was the date they
remembered.
In contrast, we celebrate Constitution Day on September 17th of each year, the
anniversary of the date the Constitution was signed, not the anniversary of the date
it was approved. If we’d followed this same approach for the Declaration of
Independence we’d being celebrating Independence Day on August 2nd of each
year, the day the Declaration of Independence was signed!
