Joshua Creek Heritage Art Centre recently held its
second annual Winterfest fundraiser. Participants
took in some arts and crafts, a books sale, henna
tattoos and live entertainment. Clockwise, from left:

dough; at left, Amara Kante, professional West African
percussionist smiles as Amadou Kante, 2, slaps the
drum; and the Tribe Maya Fire Belly Dancers, Shelina
Amarsi, Diana Tyszko, and Sherry Pronyk, perform an
American tribal style of belly dancing.

it’s obviously the same guy.”
However, it was never Mckinven’s intention to play the
starring role.
When he’d first written the script, he meant to hire an acting student to take on the lofty task. However, he discovered
finding someone with that kind of range was difficult.
“The challenge of taking on all the accents is a bit too
much for some of the actors that I interviewed,” he said,
with a laugh.
“So, I ended up doing it myself and it turned into something bigger than I had ever expected.”
Since 2011, Mckinven has performed his show more than
100 times. The venues where he has performed range in size
from packed theatres in Montreal to church basements in
the Maritimes.
Monday (March 23), Mckinven is bringing They Came
From Away to Oakville. The one-night-only show is taking
place at Maple Grove United Church, 346 Maple Grove Dr.
Doors open at 7 p.m. and tickets cost $10 at the door.
Mckinven said the intimate atmosphere of a church auditorium lends itself perfectly with his play. The setting is
meant to be a relaxed kitchen party in Newfoundland and
that’s just what he hopes the audience experiences.
“It’s not as stuffy (as a theatre) and people can just chat
with you,” he said. “They bring cookies and have coffee
while the play is going on and I’m like, ‘This is exactly what
it would be like if you were having a chat with these characters.’”
Mckinven’s dream is to perform They Came from Away in
New York City, the epicentre of the 9/11 attacks, a goal he
hopes to achieve in the coming months.
Broadway, Disney favourites concert
The students of Linda Fletcher and Gregory Cross are putting on a concert featuring Broadway hits and Disney favourites Wednesday (March 25).
The show, starting at 7 p.m., takes place at Walton United
Church, 2489 Lakeshore Rd. Tickets cost $10 or $5 for children aged 12 and younger.
All proceeds go to the scholarship fund of the Peel Music
Festival. For more information, call 905-845-5076.

It’s trendy and fun and allows you the opportunity
to shop and pamper yourself under one roof.
LIV Nail Bliss is tucked in on the lower level of
Oakville Place near Sears.
The décor is cosmopolitan and features a design
concept that recently received a design award from
the 2014 Canadian Shopping Centre Competition
for store design. The lofty, studio-chic experience offers a relaxed atmosphere, not like a typical nail sa-
lon, says owner David Nguyen, who is pleased to provide shoppers the opportunity to get a manicure or
pedicure during their trip to the mall. Setting up shop
in an enclosed mall is particularly advantageous for
customers during the long winter months, he adds.
Nguyen says his higher end salon features the
highest level of service and strict hygiene standards,
and its mission is to ensure customers enjoy their experience “while spending their valuable time with us.”
LIV Nail Bliss’ professional beauty services include manicures, pedicures, nail
extensions like Bio Sculpture Gel, Solar
Nail and acrylic, and full body waxing.
The pedicure area is designed as a cozy
