This course will examine the science & technology required for
microwavable product development, including:
 Microwave heating fundamentals,
 Microwave oven fundamentals
 Microwavable foods and packaging.
Attendees will leave the course with a better knowledge of: what are
microwaves and microwave ovens, and what are their properties; how do
microwaves interact with materials; what are the requirements and methods
for developing microwavable food products, and packaging and how they
can be integrated into product development?

Short Course: How to Write Good Journal Papers
(Optional- Additional Fee Applies)

This tutorial will present a recipe for organizing and writing good “research
reports”, including internal company reports, journal articles, and theses. The
critical elements of each section of the “research report” will be reviewed.
Content, organization, and style conventions will be discussed. The topics will
include:
 The basis for the paper: defining the “research question”.
 The Introduction: writing a clear gap sentence and statement of
purpose.
 Experimental Details: providing sufficient detail for duplicating
results.
 Results:
o The proper order of presentation – location, presentation, and
comment statements.
o The principle of heads-up display in technical drawings.
o The need to differentiate between results and interpretation.

The discussion:
o Moving from narrow comments to broad implications
o Appropriate language and interpretation of the relative
certainty of explanations, i.e. from speculation to proof.
 Conclusions: Answering the “research question”
 The Abstract: Writing an informative rather than indicative Abstract.
The tutorial will include an optional written “homework” exercise, which may be
submitted after the conference, which will be corrected and returned to the
participants.
