VIT University
Founded in 1984 as Vellore Engineering College, the institute
was declared a University in recognition of its academic
excellence by the Ministry of Human Resources Development,
Government of India in 2001. The University has since grown
by leaps and bounds – establishing excellent infrastructure
replete with state-of-art laboratories, digital library, smart class
rooms, hostels, gyms, swimming pools, auditoria , in-door and
out-door stadiums spread over an impeccably clean and green
330 acre campus – and is well on its way in fulfilling the vision
of the Founder and Chancellor Dr. G. Viswanathan to make it a
truly world renowned, top-class academic and/or research
institution. VIT today comprises of nine constituent schools
and interdisciplinary centers offering undergraduate, graduate,
post graduate and research programs upto the doctoral and
post-doctoral levels. VIT has organized a number of
International and National conferences utilizing its awesome
facilities. VIT is the first educational institution of India to get
ISO9002 certified by the DNV (Netherlands). It is again the first
institute in India to get accreditation from IEE (UK). It has also
received accreditation from NAAC (UGC). VIT has 80 MoUs
with institutions within India and from countries like Australia,
Canada, France, Germany, UK and USA in various disciplines
thereby facilitating academic and/or research exchanges
involving faculty and students with partner institutions, joint
programs involving courses as well as research and
improvement of laboratory and library facilities.
SBST - School of Bio Sciences and Technology
SBST is offering B. Tech, M. Tech., M. Sc., and Ph.D. programs
in Biotechnology and many other allied areas. SBST has
adequate infrastructure and skilled faculties for carrying out
teaching, research and developmental activities in different areas
of Biotechnology. Major areas of research include Basic and
Applied areas in Biomedical Sciences, Environmental
Biotechnology, Biomedical Engineering, Medical Biotechnology
and Bioinformatics. Apart from this, several MOUs have been singed
with industries to improve the marketability off our students by training
them in specific/industry-relevant skill-sets in areas including, but not
restricted, to STEM CELL BIOLOGY.
About the FDP/Lecture workshop
The establishment and maintenance of stem cells for
research and therapy, as well as the use of the latest
cutting edge methods and technologies for the same, is
gaining in importance and popularity not only in
academic and research institutions but also in the
industrial sector globally. This meeting should also be
seen from the fact that our efforts for establishing and
maintaining connectivity with industries and academic
institutions would be a win-win situation for all the
stakeholders in this process. A fillip to this area of
biomedical research was also provided by the award of
the Nobel Prize (2012) to Sir John B.Gurdon and Shinya
Yamanaka, recognizing his as well as his research group’s
significant findings on reprogramming of human dermal
fibroblasts to establish cells with stem cell-like properties.
Target Group
Undergraduates, post graduates, research scholars,
working professionals in the field of stem cell biology –
researchers, clinicians, in silico biologists and allied areas
including the evolutionary aspects.
Expected Outcome
Workshops and training programs in the various facets of
Stem cell Biology including evolutionary, mechanistic and
clinical aspects in humans and model systems would help
not only researchers but also the academicians to update
themselves with regard to the path-breaking discoveries
in the area of Stem Cells. Further, this program will also
bring together leading scientists in the field on a common
platform for the exchange of ideas, that can culminate in
collaborative research. Last, but not least, this efforts of
ours will certainly enhance the quality of the teachinglearning process with positive spin-offs in terms of
productivity in the academic and industrial fronts
including student-driven internships as well as research
projects. Apart from lectures, there will be a quiz
competition (on stem cells) conducted and prizes will be
awarded.
