Job Description—Interfaith Dental Clinic
Title: Registered Dental Assistant (RDA) Educator
Reports to: Clinic Director with dotted line responsibility to Chief Officer of
Education
Based at: Interfaith Dental Clinic – Murfreesboro, TN
Job Purpose and Mission:
In addition to the traditional functions of an RDA, provide effective and supportive
instruction of students enrolled in the Dental Assistant program while also
upholding the mission of Interfaith Dental Clinic. Serve as a clinical instructor and
mentor to 1-2 students at a time, providing opportunities to demonstrate, work
alongside, and observe the work of the student(s).
Performance Requirements:
 Must be a Registered Dental Assistant with active license and CPR
certification.
 Must be proficient in assisting all aspects of general dentistry (sterilization,
X-rays, 4-handed dental assisting, effective patient communication, basic lab
skills, and proficient in dental software programs).
 Must have a minimum of five years’ practical experience (within the past
seven years) of active dental assisting.
 Team player with ability to adapt
Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities (in addition to the duties/functions
of the daily roles of an Interfaith RDA, as outlined below):
1. Unless a student spot is unfilled (or a student is out during his/her assigned
rotation), RDA Educators will have a student working alongside him/her or
within his/her supervision
2. Act in a mentoring role in providing instruction, guidance, and feedback
3. Maintain continuity of Interfaith Dental Clinic’s processes, methods, etc.
4. Work alongside students to ensure seating and dismissal of patients
5. Work alongside students to ensure scheduling and review of appointments as
indicated
6. Work alongside students to ensure confirmation of procedure and review of
finances
7. Work alongside students to ensure treatment plan and explanation of doctor
diagnosis
8. Work alongside students to ensure patient comfort is maintained in the chair
9. Work alongside students to ensure placement of retraction cord and
fabrication of temporaries
10.Work alongside students to ensure timely room-set up and break-down
11.Work alongside students to ensure OHI is communicated to patient(s)
effectively
12.Work alongside students to ensure management and assistance in lab case
routing
13. Work alongside students to demonstrate how to order and stock supplies
when indicated
14. Work alongside students to demonstrate how to call-in and note
prescriptions as indicated per doctor
15. Work alongside students to ensure office cleanliness is maintained on a
daily basis
16. Work alongside students to ensure effectively filing of charts, confirming
patients, and assisting with front desk duties when needed (front desk
rotation is separate and coordinated with a point person in that department)
17. Work alongside students to recognize and indicate appropriate patient
stories for fundraising events
18. Complete daily evaluations of student performance, including gathering
feedback from others by communicating with other relevant
departments/schedule-keepers
19. Through daily planning, tailor an experience (with both staff and
volunteers) that fosters variety and leads to a positive learning environment
for the students
20. Provide students with instruction “in the moment” during each individual
appointment to ensure feedback and necessary corrections are provided
appropriately at the time of care
21. Maintain confidentiality and professionalism in working with the student(s)
and evaluating his/her performance appropriately
22. Maintain flexibility in all activities and scheduling
23. Practice and model behaviors of punctuality and dependability
