March & April 2015
Frontier Club Thoughts …
March winds and April showers… We
have already had an abundance of windy
days with snow in the forecast. Let’s hope
the warm spring rains are just around the
corner along with the flowers!
We have changed gears on our outing
to explore NW Iowa. John Wipf has invited us back to the Oak Lane Hutterite
Colony. It has been five years since we
last visited the Hutterites. John even
promised something special for everyone.
Panama Canal Cruise
Iowa State Bank’s Frontier Club along
with Siouxland Travel and Tours has
scheduled a Panama Canal Cruise for February 4-15, 2016 on Holland America’s ms
Zuiderdam or March 5-16, 2016 on the
Coral Princess. Start planning now if this
is on your bucket list. We will set sail from
Fort Lauderdale, FL and cruise the Caribbean with ports of call such as the Bahamas, Colombia, Aruba, Curacao, and
Costa Rica. Entering the Panama Canal,
we will spend a day cruising the spectacular waterway and Gatun Lake before exiting and stopping in Colon, Panama.
Twenty-six million gallons of water can
flow into a canal lock in just eight minutes! Electric locomotives attach cables on
both sides of ships to ensure they are centered while slowly motoring on their own
power through each
lock, a fantastic experience. As we select
a cruise line, more
information will be
forthcoming. Approximate cost will be
between $3400 and
$3500 per person/double occupancy for an
inside cabin. Trip cancellation/interruption
insurance may be purchased at an additional cost.

Oak Lane Hutterite Colony
Plans have changed for our spring day trip adventure. At the invitation of John Wipf, we will be visiting the Oak Lane Colony near Alexandria, SD. The Hutterites are a religious communal branch of
Anabaptists tracing their origin to the 6th Century. Sporting a beard
and black suit, you may think that Mr. Wipf just walked off the stage
of a production of “Fiddler on the Roof.” He will take us on a driving tour of the colony’s dairy, hog and turkey operations which have
the latest technology and equipment. A walking tour of the kitchen
will be followed by a delicious lunch served by the ladies of the Colony. Welcoming questions about the Oak Lane Colony and the Hutterite beliefs, John added that he had a special surprise for everyone.
En route home, we will stop for a tour in Sioux Falls with a light
dinner following. Cost of this all-inclusive day trip is $105.00 due
at signup. Departure times at the usual pick up sites are Sheldon at 6
a.m., Orange City at 6:30 a.m. and Hull at 7:00 a.m.
June 1-5 Rocky Mountain High
A trip through Colorado means inspiring views and
unmatched experiences. Cheyenne, WY will host our
first night with stops en route. We will spend the second day with a guided tour of Rocky Mountain National Park with
time in Estes Park. We will overnight in Boulder with dinner. As we
stroll the famous Pearl Street Pedestrian Mall in Boulder, we may see
some street performers. A Coors Brewery Tour and lunch in Golden will precede our arrival in
Denver where a visit to the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception and the Bronco’s Mile High
Stadium have been arranged. Following a morning tour of the Denver U.S. Mint, one of only
two open-to-the-public mints in the country, we will travel on to the Pikes Peak Country where
Garden of the Gods offers some of the most memorable scenery in Colorado. A visit to the U.S.
Air Force Academy with the Cadet Chapel will highlight our day. This schedule has not been
finalized. Our last day will find us traveling home. Cost per person/double occupancy is $1400.00 which will include
all tours, hotel stays, tips and gratuities and most meals. Trip insurance may be added at an extra expense. A $250.00
deposit is due by March 31 with the final balance will be by due April 30.
August 11-16 The Pacific Northwest
We will hit the ground running once we land in the City of Roses, Portland, OR with a guided tour of the city and
the famous International Rose Test Garden. The following morning will be spent sightseeing
along the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area (rated the #1 attraction in the area by Trip
Advisor) with the Multnomah Waterfall and other spectacular scenery. Traveling north to Seattle,
we will take the scenic route through Mt. Rainier National Park. Our first day in Seattle begins
with a city tour with a local guide. Opened for the 1962 World’s Fair, the Space Needle will afford
stunning views of Mt. Rainier and the city lights from 520 feet above. Nearby, the Chihuly Garden
and Glass exhibition
(again rated #1 tourist
attraction in the Seattle
area) will be amazing. No visit to Seattle is
complete without Pike Place Market. The
Museum of Flight, the largest private air
and space museum in the world with the
Air Force One from the Kennedy and
Nixon administration will be toured along
with the Boeing Plant. A day trip to Victoria, British Columbia via a high speed
catamaran with the famous Butchart Gardens will be included. A passport or a less
expensive passport card will be required
for Canada. Cost of this Pacific Northwest
guided vacation is $2865.00 per person/
double occupancy which will include all
tours, hotel stays, tips and gratuities and
most meals. Travel cancellation/
interruption insurance may be purchased at an additional fee. A $500.00
