The period between the beginning of January and midMarch marks the time of year in which gyms around the
country, especially in colleges and universities, begin
to bustle with furious activity as new year resolutioners
and those dedicated to achieving the ideal “beach bod” for
spring break frantically scramble to get into shape.
While devoting oneself to a healthier lifestyle always carries with it the best of intentions, exercise is fairly complicated and anyone trying to improve their body should do
a little research before heading to the gym and throwing
weights around with no prior knowledge or experience.
There are a wide variety of seemingly small factors that
can negatively impact your workouts in big ways if not
approached properly. This week the topic being discussed is
cardio.
Cardiovascular training, or “cardio,” is a staple of any
good workout and integral to the maintenance of good overall health.
One of the best and oldest ways of staying in shape is
running. Running not only helps to strengthen your lungs
and heart but also is the best way, bar none, of burning
unwanted body fat.
Running at a medium pace, or about an eight-minute
mile, five times a week for 15 minutes while maintaining a
healthy diet should yield visible results after the first week
alone.

The elliptical, stationary bike, treadmill, and every other
cardio machine on the market may seem to be a good way
to easily shed a few pounds, however these machines were
originally targeted to cater to the elderly, those with joint
issues, and physical therapy patients because they make
running easier than it actually is.
The fact that these machines are generally placed in front
of a bank of TVs only add to their attractiveness as an alternate to good old-fashioned running outside, but two major
issues exist with these cardio machines and their placement
that severely limits the results of your workout.
As a general rule, if you can focus on a magazine or a television program while conducting your workout, there is a
pretty good chance you’re not working very hard,.
According to the American Council of Exercise, by staring up at any of the televisions conveniently placed in front
of your favorite elliptical or treadmill, you transfer your
focus from the exercise to what you see up on the screen,
which can limit the effectiveness of your workout by a full
eight percent.
With cardio machines, you are limited to moving forward
in a straight line with little to no variation in your stride,
speed, intensity, or even the use of your arms. Even wind
resistance, small turns, dips, and bumps in a road or even a
track provides the variety that contributes to a better overall body workout.
We are very lucky here at CNU to have a high quality
rubber track that is open for any student’s use. Also, there
are plenty of neighborhood roads surrounding the school
that provide a shady and scenic running environment.
So as we move closer to the beaches of spring break, make
sure you are utilizing the best means possible to achieve
your fitness goals to avoid letting your health prevent you
from having the most fun possible. n
