IT 212 Computer Hardware Fundamentals: This course explains
the basic principles of how computers work. It provides a
comprehensive understanding of the essential components
associated with computers (with a focus on Personal Computers
(PCs). Topics include history of computers, the processor,
motherboard, memory, graphics and sound adapters, input and
output devices, and storage media, an overview of operating
systems and other software, and various methods used to connect
computers to each other and the Internet. The course also addresses
recent advances in computer hardware and how they affect
computer performance.

Instructor will post a topic every week for a student who prepares a10-minute audio-visual
presentation on the given topic. The bonus point will be relative to the quality of the
student’s presentation. Every presentation has a Q&A forum on discussion board. The
student should respond to the questions posted by other students regarding her/his
presentation. Consistent and effective contributions of students to these discussion forums
can have positive impact to their final grade. Notify your instructor during the first week of
the semester if you are interested in receiving bonus point(s).

Rationale
Computers have become a ubiquitous part of everyday life. An essential understanding of
computer hardware and its software components is a fundamental part of becoming proficient
in information technology (IT). Any IT professional should be able to identify the basic
hardware components of computers and at times even be able to replace parts such as the
motherboard and expand memory. This course is an essential part of the IT curriculum that
aims to provide proficieny in computer hardware and its functionality.
Prerequisites
Currently there are no prerequisites for this course.
Assignment(s)
Late or unsuccessful submission of the assignment is 0 credit on the assignment. This
policy is strictly applied. Submit your assignment in PDF format on the specified due
date in course schedule, and before the deadline that is 11:50 PM. This is an individual
assignment. Sharing your solution or copying from others is considered plagiarism. The
penalty in the course policy for such act is 0 for the assignment in the first time, and F
in the course for the second time. This course has ONE time grace on the assignments,
i.e., the worst assignment grade will be removed for every student.
Examinations
Midterm and Final Exams test the student’s knowledge of the materials presented in both
readings and lectures. Examinations are comprehensive over the work performed during
the course. You will interpret the material of the course, not to repeat it via rote memory.
Examinations enhance the student’s experience and challenge students to apply course
material. Both of the exams take place at university campus.
All Homework should be submitted via Blackboard.

Grades will be awarded in accordance with the GMU Grading System for

* Grades of "C-" and "D" are considered passing grades for undergraduate courses.
However, a Minimum grade of "C" is required in the BSIT program for any course that is a
prerequisite for one or more other courses. Raw scores may be adjusted by the Instructor to
calculate final grades.
Access to Course Materials
All course materials will be posted onto Blackboard. You may access these materials by
visiting: http://courses.gmu.edu. If assignments or due dates are changed, this will be done
via “Announcements” in Blackboard.
Classroom Conduct
You are expected to be punctual, alert, and prepared for each class. Be considerate of other
students, i.e., be quiet for the duration of the class period, except when you have something
to contribute. Do not surf on the Internet during class time. Please feel free to ask questions
and / or offer pertinent comments in class. If you are confused, more than likely, someone
else is too. If you need extra help, please schedule an appointment in advance or drop by
during regular office hours. Cell phones have no place in class. Either leave them behind or
turn them off prior to entering the classroom. No eating during lectures. You may eat
something during the break.

For this course, the following requirements are specified:

this course for this semester.

Any work to be submitted is prepared entirely and exclusively by the student submitting

any manner with other students (except students assigned as Teaching Assistants or
Undergraduate Peer Mentors to this course and the student's section), unless all students
involved have had their work graded and returned by the Instructor, or the Instructor has
explicitly approved such sharing.
Class Participation Policy
Students are expected to study each online lecture, regularly follow the schedule and
assignment due dates to complete any required preparatory work (including assigned reading
– see schedule) and to participate actively in lectures, discussions and exercises. As members
of the academic community, all students are expected to contribute regardless of their
proficiency with the subject matter.
Departmental policy requires students to take exams at the scheduled time and place, unless
there are truly compelling circumstances supported by appropriate documentation. Except in
such circumstances, failure to attend a scheduled exam may result in a score of zero (0) for
that exam.

Religious Holidays
A list of religious holidays is available on the University Life Calendar page

observance conflicts with a scheduled course activity must contact the Instructor at least
2 weeks in advance of the conflict date in order to make alternative arrangements.
Communications
Registered students will be given access to a section of the Blackboard Learning System for
this course. Blackboard will be used as the primary mechanism (outside of lectures) to
disseminate course information, including announcements, lecture slides, homework and
other assignments, and scores for homework and exams.
Communication with the Instructor on issues relating to the individual student should be
conducted using GMU email, or in person - not in the public forums on Blackboard. For
urgent messages, you should also attempt to contact the Instructor via email, before 5 PM
during the weekdays. Emails sent later than 5 PM will be responded the following day.
Federal privacy law and GMU policy require that any communication with a student related
in any way to a student's status be conducted using secure GMU systems – if you use email
to communicate with the Instructor you MUST send messages from your GMU email
account.
Privacy
Instructors respect and protect the privacy of information related to individual students.
As described above, issues relating to an individual student will be discussed via email,
telephone or in person. Instructors will not discuss issues relating to an individual student
with other students (or anyone without a need to know) without prior permission of the
student.
Assessable work other than final exams will be returned to individual students directly by
the Instructor (or by a faculty or staff member or a Teaching Assistant designated by the
Instructor or via another secure method). Under no circumstances will a student's graded
work be returned to another student.
Faculty and staff will take care to protect the privacy of each student's scores and grades.
Disability Accommodations
The Office of Disability Services (ODS) works with disabled students to arrange for
appropriate accommodations to ensure equal access to university services. Any student with
a disability of any kind is strongly encouraged to register with ODS as soon as possible and
