Dear members of ITRA and members of its steering committee,
Please let me introduce myself briefly.
My name is Nuno Gonçalves, I am the race director of MIUT® – MADEIRA ISLAND ULTRA
TRAIL®, and i would like to make myself available to be an ITRA national representative for
Portugal.
I am really excited by the current growth of trail running, internationally and locally in
Portugal, and i believe that trail running can grow up to be a major sport and be recognized as
an attractive activity by all generations of people around the world.
Coming from Portugal, with its rich culture, flora, fauna and landscape diversity, my interest is
also to expose our magnificent natural and cultural heritage. Madeira Island in particular is a
renowned tourist destination, and its greatest tourist attractions are the spectacular natural
landscapes. Its luxurious vegetation continues to fascinate all those who are closely drawn to
nature. The archipelago, included in the bio-geographic region of Macaronesia, retains a
natural heritage of great scientific value, the Laurissilva Forest – distinguished by UNESCO as a
World Natural Heritage.
It would be a great honour and a privilege to be involved in a positive collaboration with ITRA,
for the sustainable future of trail running, establishing a good liaison and helping to build a
consensus between ITRA and the trail running community in Portugal. I would also like to
promote trail running, its culture, values, code of ethics and share ITRA's mission, activities and
issues.
Sincerely yours,
Nuno Gonçalves
