Brain Storming Session on “Functional Livestock
Products” organized at IVRI
Considering the importance of improved functionality of milk, meat and egg
products in improving the human health, a one-day Brain Storming Session on “Functional
Livestock Products” organized by the ICAR-Indian Veterinary Research Institute (IVRI) in
association
with
Indian
Agricultural
Universities
Association
(IAUA)
and
National Academy of Dairy Science (NADS)
was held on 6th June, 2015 at ICAR-IVRI,
Izatnagar. Fifty participants engaged in
research, teaching and industry from
various parts of the country have
participated in the Brain Storming Session.
Dr Nagendra Sharma, Former ViceChancellor, Shere-e-Kashmir University of
Animal Science & Technology, Jammu
graced the inaugural session as Chief
Guest and briefed about the wide scope existing for research in dairy, meat and poultry
sector for supplying variety of functional products to the Indian market.
Dr R.K. Singh, Director, IVRI, in his introductory remarks highlighted about the
paradigm shift in the mindset of consumers from conventional foods to functional foods for
improved health and well being.
Dr R.P. Singh, Executive Secretary, IAUA, New Delhi emphasized the need to
develop functional livestock products for reducing the risk of chronic diseases. Organizing
Secretary Dr S.K.Mendiratta, Head, Division of Livestock Products Technology (LPT)
welcomed
all
the
dignitaries
and
participants for attending the Brain
Storming Session. Officials from Marya Day
Agro
Foods,
Bareilly
and
Kancor
Ingredients Ltd., Kerala appreciated the
efforts of IVRI, IAUA and NADS.
During the Brain Storming Session,
exhaustive discussion were held on the
topics such as ingredients for functional
food, functional egg products, labeling and
legal issues, health benefits of functional
livestock products, functional milk products,
approaches for functional livestock products, market potential of functional meat products,
etc. The participants showed keen interest through active deliberations on each topic.
Experts in the subject of livestock products namely, Dr Sarfaraz Ahmed Wani, Dean,
SKUAST, Kashmir; Dr Manish Chatli, Head, LPT, GADVASU, Ludhiana; Dr. Latha Sabikhi,
Head, DT, NDRI, Karnal; Dr. Vikas Pathak, Head, LPT, DUVASU, Mathura and Dr B.M.
Naveena, Sr. Scientist, NRC on Meat, Hyderabad detailed about each topic as resource
persons.
Prominent amongst others present
on this occasion, Dr M.K. Agnihotri,
Controller of Examinations (Edn.), ICAR,
New Delhi; Dr V.P. Singh, Joint Director
(Academic); Dr B.P. Mishra, Joint Director
(Research); Dr V.K. Gupta, Joint Director
(CADRAD); Heads of Divisions; scientists
and students of LPT Division, IVRI. The
programme was concluded by distributing
certificates and study material on functional
livestock products to the participants.
Dr S.V.S. Malik, Principal Scientist
and Scientific Secretary to the Director,
IVRI anchored the entire programme while, Dr Rajiv Ranjan Kumar, Scientist, Division of
LPT proposed a vote of thanks.
