Consideration of Beliefs, Values and
Progress in the Quest for Improved
Global Health
Solomon R. Benatar, MBChB, DSC (Med)
Emeritus Professor of Medicine, University of Cape Town
Abstract: Multiple complex global crises that increasingly threaten health and well-being, define a
distinctive turning point in human and world history. Reflections on trends in belief systems and values
associated with ‘progress’ set the scene for contemplating future prospects for global and planetary health.
Where do we come from, who are we, what do we value and where are we going, are perennial questions
that must be diligently asked and addressed if we are to understand the limits of short term, selfish,
anthropocentric endeavours. We have the ingenuity to improve future prospects.
