Summer Enrichment
At Frances L. Jenkins middle school
Summer Enrichment Program—Course Descriptions
Nutrition, Culinary and Fitness Basics—Brittany Hardy
Did you know that almost 20% of teens skip breakfast every day, and 75% of teens skip physical activity? This class
will help students develop their own plans and set healthy goals for nutrition and physical activity. Students will
have the opportunity to see that physical activity can be fun, and they will be able to use their knowledge of
nutrition basics to make and enjoy healthy and delicious snacks. This class is for all skill levels and is sure to give
your student the desire to explore the physical activities that abound in our beautiful town!
Green Engineering: Invention Repurposing—Week 2—Talitha Couture
Have you ever wondered what’s inside a blender? How about a telephone? Think you have what it takes to invent
“The next great thing?” Join us as we deconstruct common household items and create new, exciting inventions.
You’ll love this hands-on, creative experience as you explore your inner genius!
Simple Machines: Engineering Design Challenges—Week 3—Talitha Couture
CRASH IT, SMASH IT, but whatever you do, DON’T BREAK THE EGG!!!! Join us as we design crash test cars that are
capable of protecting an egg that will be driven down a ramp and into a wall. Through the engineering design
process, you will design, build, test, and refine your car to provide maximum safety for your oh so fragile
passenger, THE EGG!
Science Exploration—Marshmallows, Squids, Playdoh & Tornados—Amber Fryar
This class is all about the excitement and hands-on aspect of science. Each day will focus on a different branch of
study- biology, chemistry, physics, geology and meteorology. We will be experimenting, making tools, performing
field work, and dissecting. Some topics include, severe weather, anatomy, ecosystems, chemical reactions (ice
cream and marshmallows!), soil and rocks, motion and waves (including an infrared camera). Prepare to have fun
and get messy!
Creativity through Exploration and Interpretation—Karolyn Dicken
Come join us this summer as we dive into a variety of literature excerpts to gain a whole new understanding! We
will dive into character and theme in ways you've never thought of and develop meaning through creativity and
technology. We'll play games, listen to TED talks, have engaging conversations, and create pieces based on our
own interpretation. Grab a friend and come join us for a great time!
Ready, Set, Algebra!—Week 1—Anne Terranova
We will use a variety of manipulatives, activities and games to explore patterns and algebra. Color tiles, “frogs,”
and Slinkies will help us understand algebra!
Exploring Circles—Week 2—Anne Terranova
We will use a variety of methods to determine circumference and area of circles. Which method did Archimedes
use? We will then apply this knowledge to volume of cylinders and create a business plan for making money from
candle sales. Students will make their own candles!
Making Sense of Numbers—Week 3—Anne Terranova
We will explore numbers through patterns and games. See if you can beat your opponent by developing the better
strategy!
Design, Build, and Program a Robot—Adam Truex
Learn how to creatively think and problem solve. In Automation and Robotics students will learn about mechanical
systems, sensors, and programming. Use tools such as the engineering design process, VEX Robotics equipment,
and Robot C software to invent and innovate. Build and program robots to complete real world problems as you
make a robot go through a maze and disarm mines in the final minesweeper challenge.
How To Make a Movie—Bruce Phillips
Imagine making movies for the big screen, YouTube, or even just for your friends. In this class we will learn the
basics of how to write, film, direct, act in, and even edit a movie. We will watch examples of great filmmaking and
then make our own movies to share with the class. Come and learn how to be a movie maker! You may take the
class once, twice or all three times.
Minecraft EDU—Michael Wheeler
Explore, Gather, and Create in the award winning multiplayer Minecraft EDU virtual sandbox game. Students
working together will start with an introduction to the game environment, controls, and etiquette. Then work
together as they progress from a virtual campsite, to a home, a village, and a small civilization. The final project will
have students, like a virtual construction crew, building a virtual model of the school building. Students will engage
in crafting, creativity, and collaboration. From novice to expert, there will be a lot of building to do. Better have
your diamond pickaxe handy!
