CLASS DESCRIPTIONS SPRING 2015
CLASSES BEGIN THE WEEK OF APRIL 7, 2015
Anger Management Classes: These classes are for the student and parent. They are held weekly throughout the traditional
school year. Participants may start at any time during the school year.
1.
High School Anger Management . . . . . . . (Grades 9-12) . . . . Wednesdays (4 weeks)
2.
Middle School Anger Management . . . . . . (Grades 7-9) . . . . . Wednesdays (4 weeks)
3.
Elementary Anger Management . . . . . . . . (Grades 3-6) . . . . . Thursdays (3 weeks)
4.
Confident, Successful & Independent: A group for young adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder
(Ages 17 thru 21) Enrollment is limited
This is a class to help teenagers and young adults, ages 17-21, with Autism Spectrum Disorder to transition to independence.
It will focus on self-esteem, anxiety, relationships, seeking employment, college, survival skills, and career choices.

Truancy School for Students (3 weeks)
A class for students and parents that addresses state law regarding attendance, identifying influences and
consequences of behavior, goal setting, and communication skills.
6.
Calming the Storm Within: Anger Management for Adults
This class is designed to teach alternatives to “losing your cool” so that anger can be used to resolve, rather than
intensify conflict situations.
7.
Effective Parent Training: How to get your children to do what you want them to do
This class provides a step-by-step approach to changing children’s behavior in a positive way.
8.
Effective Teacher Training: How to get your students to do what you want them to do
(7 weeks) (Lane Change Credit Available: Teachers Must Attend 14 Hours)
This class provides teachers with research-based interventions and strategies designed to help change their students’
classroom behaviors in a positive way. Teachers will be shown how to design effective classroom management
programs, interventions for individual students who display high rates of misbehavior, and strategies for working with
students that have specific disabilities.
9.
Just Breathe – Teens learning to live mindfully with stress and drama (Grades 7-12)
Designed for middle and high school students, ages 13-17, this class teaches essential mindfulness skills that can lead
to more efficient coping with difficult situations, as well as decreased stress and anxiety. Learn to relax and unwind
while building self-help skills that will last a lifetime. Effectiveness of this group will be examined as part of a research
study sponsored by the University of Utah. If parents are interested in learning more about having their student

Practical Parenting
Learn practical solutions to your child/teen’s toughest problems. Topics include: Relationship Building, Conflict
Resolution, Setting Limits, Discipline, Behavior Basics and Anger Management.
11, 18, 24. Suicide Prevention Training Seminar for Educators (Enrollment is limited)
This one-hour class meets half of the USOE requirements for suicide prevention training for re-licensure. Educators
will learn about causes, myths, and symptoms of suicide among children and adolescents. The purpose of this class is
to raise awareness, sensitivity, and steps to take when dealing with potentially suicidal youth.
12.
Caught in the Crossfire: A group for children dealing with divorce (Ages 7-12)
This support group helps children develop an understanding of the emotions related to divorce.
13.
Positive Parenting Practices for the child with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (A.D.H.D.) (9 weeks)
This class is for parents whose children have been diagnosed as having Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder
(A.D.H.D.). The class will stress behavior management techniques for increasing compliance at home and school.
14, 15. Parents helping children make and keep friends (Parent Group and Children’s Group)
(Grades 2-6) Parents are required to attend class with their children.
A class that focuses on problem solving, goal setting, and social skills. This is a class for parents and their children.

Blues Busters: A class for children who are sad or worried (Grades 3-6)
This class teaches coping strategies to help students deal more successfully with problems associated with depression
and anxiety.
17.
Blues Busters: Skills for Parents
This class helps parents understand the symptoms of anxiety and depression in children and their various treatment
methods. Parents will also learn how to help children dealing with these issues cope with daily activities, build selfesteem, and relate to other children. Nightly topics correspond with those taught in the Blues Busters: A class for
children who are sad or worried.
19.
Reading Your Environment: A social skills group for students with Autism Spectrum Disorder (Grades 3-6)
(Enrollment is limited)
This support group helps elementary age children with Autism Spectrum Disorder identify environmental cues and
learn coping strategies to successfully navigate their world.
20.
Reading Your Environment: A social skills group for students with Autism Spectrum Disorder (Grades 7-9)
(Enrollment is limited)
This support group helps adolescents with Autism Spectrum Disorder identify environmental cues and learn coping
strategies to successfully navigate their world.
21.
Supporting Your Child Socially: A class for parents of children with Autism Spectrum Disorder
This class helps parents who have children with Autism Spectrum Disorder guide and support their child in socially
adapting and successfully navigating their world.
22.
Liking the Girl In the Mirror: Self-Esteem (Grades 7-10)
This fun, interactive course for girls will examine what self-esteem is, the development and factors affecting selfesteem, an examination of the consequences and symptoms of low self-esteem, the behaviors associated with the
symptoms of low self-image, and methods to rebuild and maintain a good level of self-esteem throughout life.
23.
Safeguarding our Children and Teens: A seminar for parents addressing bullying, Internet safety, substance
use and abuse, and suicide prevention
Parents will learn about bullying; internet safety; substance use and abuse; and causes, myths, and symptoms of
suicide among children and adolescents.
