Catechesis of the Good Shepherd, Level 1, Part I
ABOUT CATECHESIS OF THE
GOOD SHEPHERD
The Catechesis of the Good Shepherd is a
particular approach to the religious
formation of children, ages 3-12,
which is rooted in Scripture, Liturgy,
and the educational principles of
Maria Montessori. Begun as an
experimental work in the Diocese of
Rome in 1954, Hebrew scholar, Dr.
Sofia Cavalletti, and Gianna Gobbi, Montessori
educator, discovered through careful and patient
observation that:
• God and the child are already in
relationship.
• The child’s potential for receiving and
enjoying the deepest element of the
Christian message is profound.
• The child is capable, in the words of the
mystics, of falling in love with God.
The purpose of the Catechesis of the Good
Shepherd is to assist the development of this
relationship, respecting the child’s dignity and
developmental sensitivities for the face of God
that most deeply strikes his/her religious need to
answer the silent plea of the child, “Help me
draw closer to God by myself ”
COURSE OBJECTIVES
• To explore the religious nature and most
vital religious needs of the child 3-6 years of
age.
• To present methodology and guiding
principles of the Catechesis of the Good
Shepherd
• To meditate on the scriptural and liturgical
themes presented to the 3-6 year old child
• To broaden the participant’s ability to
observe and learn from the child, to listen
with the child to Scripture, and to assist
the child’s prayer.
• To deepen the participant’s own
enjoyment of God’s presence.
• To offer guidelines and assistance in
preparing the “atrium” environment, in
making the catechetical material, and in
writing the catechist’s “album”.
Formation in Level 1 is the foundation for
subsequent formation in Levels II and III in the
Catechesis of the Good Shepherd.
“If we want to help the
child draw nearer to
God, we should with
patience and courage
seek to go always closer
to the vital nucleus of
things.
FORMATION LEADER:
Katy Beedle Rice
A recognized formation leader for Level 1,
Katy Beedle Rice has received training in all
three levels of CGS. She has worked in the religious education office at the Cathedral of the
Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary for 9 years
and has been a lead catechist in all 3 levels.
Katy is in the process of working towards a
Masters in Pastoral Studies with a concentration in the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd at
Aquinas Institute of Theology in St. Louis, Missouri. Katy brings with her a great enthusiasm
for this work and a love of living the religious
life with children in the Atrium. She is a contributing preacher for the Dominican podcast,
“theWord” at word.op.org, and blogs about
motherhood and spirituality at
blessedbrokenshared.blogspot.com.
This requires study and
prayer.
The children will be our
teachers if we know how
to observe them.”
