The 2014-2015 school year is flying by!
In April we will complete one of our most
important building
goals with the SBAC
ELA.
sure to communicate
with your counselor
before the test to ensure that all graduation
requirements are met.
The class of 2016 represented Kamiakin
well in their HSPE
testing. Our Sophomores, Juniors and
Seniors tested March
17th—19th for Reading
and Writing. Students
will continue testing
when they take the
Math EOC on May 27th
-29th and Science
EOC on June 2nd June 4th. Grade 10
ELA will be done in
class May 6th-19th.
In April, we are planning our ninth year of
Student Led Conferences. Student Led
Conferences are one
of the highlights of the
school year. Kamiakin
staff appreciates the
opportunity to meet
with the parents and
ensure that all students have a plan for
where they want to go
after high school.
Students who transferred to Kamiakin
from another state and
have passed that
state’s tests may receive a waiver but they
will not be eligible to
earn a CAA. All waivers are submitted
through the counseling
office. If you have a
question on your status for a waiver be
March also marked
registration for the
2015-2016 school
year. We are projecting for what our students need, and staffing for these classes
appropriately. One of
our goals is that every
student be aware of
college, eligible for college and prepared for
college. The choices
that students are making in classes should
align with these goals.
Our students are exhibiting signs that they
are smart educational
consumers by the
choices that they are
making. Student’s
course requests are
available for viewing
via Parent Portal. If
you see errors in the
course requests,
please contact your
child’s counselor immediately.
Coming soon, we will
be participating in
Commencement exercises for the class of
2015. Graduation is
set for June 6th and
will be upon us before
we know it! Senior parents, please take time
to remind your children
how important it is that
they finish strong. Colleges are increasingly
holding admission
pending a student’s
success in the classes
that they are enrolled
in their senior year.

Kamiakin ceramics students recently exhibited work at the ESD 123
Regional Superintendent’s High School Art Show. Keefe Satham
received an Honorable Mention for his “Untitled” piece made from clay
and metal. Krisha Johnson received a “Judges Choice Award” for her
ceramic sculpture titled “Owl”. Krisha’s piece will now be sent to
Olympia to be exhibited at the Old State Capital in May and compete in
the State ESD Superintendent’s High School Art Show.
Attendance Reminder
When your student is going to miss school for family activities don’t forget to
have them do a pre-excuse to be excused. Send them to the Attendance Office
with a note explaining the dates to be gone. We will give them a pre-excuse form
to have completed by their teachers and returned to us to be excused. Without
doing this procedure out of town and family events will not be excused.
ALSO If your student is going to miss finals they must have a pre-excuse completed
and approved by the principal three weeks before finals. Have your student take
a note to the attendance office to acquire a pre-excuse form to complete the pro-

National Award Winner
Savannah Forbes, an Interior Design Student at Kamiakin
High School, was the national winner for the Ready Mix
Concrete essay scholarship contest. She and her parents
were flown to Orlando, Florida for three days to attend
the awards ceremony and go to Disney World. She was
awarded 2,000 dollars at the ceremony and was told that
if she entered any field of study in college that includes
construction or use of concrete in any way, she would be
awarded another 3,000 dollars.
Savannah wrote about the history of concrete and how is
was used in the Roman Coliseum construction, how durable it is and sited an example of a school that survived
two tornados as well as the current usages of concrete in
home construction and commercial uses.
Advanced Placement Tests
Advanced Placement exams will be administered this spring from May 4 through May 15.
AP Student Bulletins supplied by College Board as well as online ordering instructions
and fee information were distributed to all students enrolled in an AP course in late January. Links to detailed registration information and the www.TotalRegistration.net/AP/480524
webpage were also posted on Kamiakin High School’s home page. The 2015 AP Exam
schedule will be distributed to all students thru their AP classes when registration is complete and test sites finalized.
AP exam pre-administration for all students will take place in their individual AP classes
the week of April 20th-28th.
Students taking multiple exams complete the pre-administration process one time only.
Students who do not complete a pre-administration session need to see Ms. Conover as
soon as possible if you have a potential conflict. She can be reached at 222-6157.

Mrs. Smith Career Specialist
Freshmen/Sophomores

Get involved in activities outside the classroom. Work toward leadership positions
in the activities that you like best.

Become involved in community service and other volunteer activities. (The people who read college applications aren’t just looking for grades).

Check out careers you think you may be interested in. Use Career Cruising or
come to the Career Center for information.
Remember: “Grades Do Count Forever!”
Juniors

Juniors will be revisiting their Career Cruising during the US History classes this
spring to update research for careers, colleges and adding a resume’. This is a great
opportunity for Juniors to prepare for next year.

Register for the SAT or ACT exams and prepare before taking the test.

Colleges will start doing their spring visits before long, so plan on attending to get
more information to help you be ready to decide next fall.

Use Career Cruising as a helpful tool when doing a college search.

Set up a filing system with individual folders for each college’s correspondence
and printed material.
If you are planning on attending a military academy you should apply for admission
between April of your junior year in high school and November of your senior year in
high school. The earlier you apply the better.
Seniors
Review your Student Aid Report and make corrections, if necessary.

Respond promptly to requests for additional information from your college or
scholarship organization.

Watch your mail box for college acceptance letters and financial aid offers.

Evaluate all financial aid offers carefully. Ask questions!

Consider grants, work-study and other aid you don't have to repay before accepting a student loan.

Decide on a college and send in all forms or deposits by the deadline (May 1 for
most colleges).

Let your college know the financial aid awards you're accepting and declining.

Notify the colleges you were accepted to but won't be attending.
Keep checking the scholarship list and applying for those that apply to your career.
Keep checking your school email for updates.

Undecided Seniors…
“Where are YOU going?”
Need some help?
Here are some choices…
Career/Technical colleges: You can earn a certificate, degree, or diploma from a
career college or technical school that will train you for a specific career, trade, or profession. One to two years of college and off to work! These schools train students for a
variety of technical positions, including automotive technician, computer technician,
hairstylist, medical assistant, engineering technology, fire science and many other
fields.
Community Colleges: Community colleges are two year post-secondary institutions
that offer certificate programs, Associate of Arts degrees, Associate of Sciences degrees, plus many other programs.
For both of the above go to Career Cruising to find a school that would apply to your
interest. (See Mrs. Smith for username and password.)
Military: The U.S. Armed Forces are made up of the six armed service branches: Air
Force, Army, Navy, Marines, Coast Guard, & National Guard. There are hundreds of
careers in the military in which you can earn an AA or BA degree while serving your
country. Check with the local recruiter or on the KAHS career center web site for more
information.
On –the-Job & Apprenticeships: Apprenticeships are a combination of on-the-job
training and related classroom instruction in which workers learn the practical and theoretical aspects of a highly skilled occupation. Apprenticeship programs are sponsored
by joint employer and labor groups, individual employers, and/or employer associations.
These are paid positions.
Link to Career Cruising to find information that would apply to your career interest. (See Mrs. Smith for username and password.)
