THE OPPORTUNITY
The University of Calgary’s Faculty of Law is seeking an accomplished Director of Development to
work with the Dean of Law in achieving the goal of positioning the Faculty of Law as one of Canada’s top
law schools. Working with the Dean, the Director will plan and manage philanthropic and sponsorship
activity and will build and cultivate relationships with donors, alumni, key community stakeholders, and
members of the legal community.
Jointly reporting to Dean Ian Holloway and the Associate Vice President, Development, Kristine
Williamson, the Director of Development will lead the creation and implementation of development
strategies and operational plans to achieve the goals and objectives of the Faculty.

Our students are well positioned for success given our proximity to top legal experts in the field and the
enviable position Calgary has of being home to the greatest concentration of major corporate head
offices in Canada. In 2013, we recorded an Articling placement rate of 97%, among the highest in
Canada, and our students consistently stand higher than the 81st percentile in LSAT scores.

DEVELOPMENT IN THE FACULTY OF LAW
The Faculty currently raises an average of $2.5 million annually, with significant capacity for increased
donor support. The Dean is extremely involved in all aspects of the Faculty’s external portfolio and
devotes considerable time to development efforts.
We have been focused on the Inspiring Energy.Skills.Excellence campaign, with a goal to raise $20
million for the Faculty of Law towards the campaign priorities:
Energy - $12 million goal: to build capacity in the fields of natural resources, energy and
environmental law by creating new learning opportunities for students, expanding our depth in the
area, increasing our graduate programming and deepening our international connection by working
with and learning from world leaders in the area.
Skills - $6 million goal: to ensure students learn from professors, judges, practicing lawyers and
leading experts in the field, strengthening practical competencies in students, including legal ethics,
dispute resolution and advocacy, client interviewing skills, legal research and writing, mooting and
debating, and business skills.
Excellence - $2 million goal: to allow for the development of more robust internship options so
students can be placed in their preferred practice areas, industries or companies and to make it
possible for students to learn from top scholars from around the world through an eminent visitors
program – making the Faculty Western Canada's standard of excellence for Juris Doctor programs.
Launched in 2010, the campaign to date has raised close to $8 million. Significant campaign gifts
include a gift of $525,000 from Burnet, Duckworth & Palmer LLP to honour the late Jim Palmer, one of
our honourary co-chairs, long-time supporter of the Faculty of Law, and former chancellor of the
University; $600,000 from Bennett Jones to name the Bennett Jones Lecture Theatre; and $750,000
from Norton Rose Fulbright Canada to expand the Faculty’s offerings in energy law curriculum and
opportunities.
The Campaign Cabinet, co-chaired by Kerry Dyte, QC, Executive Vice President, General Counsel &
Corporate Secretary, Cenovus Energy Inc. and Eric Miller, retired Senior Vice President & Chief Legal
Officer, Agrium Inc. is comprised of influential members of the Calgary and law communities and is fully
committed to achieving the Campaign goal, furthering the exceptional work of the Faculty.
The University of Calgary is currently planning a comprehensive national campaign. This is a Universitywide initiative designed to significantly increase philanthropic revenue for the University. It is the single
most ambitious program ever undertaken by the central Development Office and among the largest
comprehensive fundraising campaigns in Canadian history.

THE IDEAL CANDIDATE
A visionary thinker with a strategic approach and an appreciation of tactical nuance, the Director of
Development will have a proven track-record of successfully achieving program and fundraising
objectives, and will be confident in his or her professional knowledge, skills and abilities. A seasoned
fundraiser with broad advancement experience, the successful candidate will be proficient in major gift
fundraising at the $25,000 level and above.
The new incumbent will possess exceptional maturity and emotional intelligence, encouraging and
actively participating in discussions and respectfully communicating opinions while navigating between
differing interests. Politically astute with an understanding of complex environments, the successful
candidate will appreciate the intricacies that exist in a university setting and ensure mutual understanding
of goals and objectives.
Mature, friendly and with polished confidence, the ideal candidate will have excelled in a multistakeholder environment. The new incumbent’s persistent and genuine relationship building skills will
have resulted in long-term partnerships; respecting the unique roles that each brings to furthering
success through development activities. Ideally possessing a familiarity of the Calgary business
community, the successful candidate will be experienced at recognizing opportunities to match donors’
needs to the needs of the Faculty. Willing to take calculated risks, the new Director will bring creativity to
all development activities, ensuring a high level of donor interest and engagement.
Balanced with the ability to work well independently, the ideal candidate will be a collaborative and
contributing team player, both within the Faculty and across the University. A sincere openness to the
experience and knowledge of colleagues is a key attribute of the Director, promoting teamwork and a
culture of philanthropy throughout the Faculty.
Eager to learn with a natural curiosity, the ideal candidate will actively seek dialogue to gain a strong
understanding of the Faculty and University. Flexible and adaptive, the new Director of Development will
have thrived in a fast-paced environment, capably managing expectations to align with established
outcomes.
ACCOUNTABILITIES
Working closely with the Dean, the Director of Development is responsible for all aspects of fundraising
and those aspects of external relations as they relate to development in the Faculty of Law.
The scope of the responsibilities for the Director of Development will include, but not be limited to:
 Provide leadership in the development of short and long-term strategic fund raising plans for the
Faculty.
 Develop and implement a comprehensive fund raising plan that incorporates annual giving (from
alumni and others), sponsorships, major gifts, specialized campaigns and planned giving.
 Develop prospect lists and assist the Dean, others in the faculty and volunteers in identifying,
cultivating, soliciting and stewarding donors to the Faculty.
 Work with central Development Office to integrate and coordinate the Faculty’s fundraising
planning and execution with that of the University as a whole.

Plan to achieve fund raising targets, while recognizing that achievement of financial targets is not
the only measurement of success for a fundraiser. Define and achieve other measurables with
the Dean and Associate Vice President, Development.
Work with the Dean to develop and manage any fundraising volunteer groups, such as the
campaign committee, that will actively engage Law alumni and members of the legal community.
Consult with the Dean and Associate Vice President, Development on all matters pertaining to
fund development.
Collaborate with other members of the Faculty of Law administration team who have
responsibilities for alumni relations, external relations and communications, including but not
limited to the Marketing and Communications Manager and Event Coordinator, to ensure
effective positioning of the Faculty of Law with its various stakeholders, including donors and
sponsors, alumni and community partners.
Successful management of fund raising resources (budget, senior University officials, colleagues,
volunteers) in alignment with the Faculty’s fundraising initiatives.
The practice of ethical fundraising in keeping with the University’s mission and values and in
accordance with charitable giving standards.
Ensure ongoing familiarity with current trends in fund development.
Ongoing personal development as a professional fundraiser.
QUALIFICATIONS AND COMPETENCIES







Extensive fundraising experience, including demonstrated experience in major gifts (ideally
$25,000+) solicitations.
Excellent verbal and written communication abilities.
Sound judgment and decision-making capabilities and the ability to work independently.
Excellent organizational skills.
The ability to coach and train faculty and colleagues in the area of major gift fundraising.
Exposure to a moves management fundraising culture, and experience with Raiser’s Edge or
similar fundraising database system.
A basic understanding of the legal profession and how it is evolving is an asset.
