A very warm welcome to this 2015 Visit Spalding Guide. You and your family will be pleasantly surprised at all the things
there are to do and see in this beautiful Lincolnshire Market Town.
Spalding has a vibrant town centre, much of which is situated in a conservation area, with unique independent shops
and a number of East European supermarkets with a wide range of continental foodstuffs for you to discover; a
traditional English market day on Tuesdays and Saturdays; historical buildings to visit such as Ayscoughfee Hall
Museum and Gardens, the Chain Bridge Forge (which is a living museum) and a myriad of outstanding churches
which are situated throughout the town.
There are many fine restaurants, coffee shops, public houses and night clubs to satisfy all tastes and budgets and why
not enjoy a film, musical show or play at the South Holland Centre or have a fun time at Alley-Catz bowling.
Spalding boasts beautiful Georgian terraces and tree-lined walks along the River Welland, which runs through the
centre of town. You can also take a trip on the famous Spalding water taxi, which will take you to the Springfields Outlet
Shopping Centre and award winning Festival Gardens.
Spalding is an excellent base for visiting some of the other attractions in the South Holland area. Experience the
diversity of habitats around the Wash Estuary, one of Europe’s most protected coastal areas; visit the magnificent
churches in the surrounding towns and villages, many of which have spectacular annual flower festivals; or just enjoy
the tranquillity and relaxation whilst exploring the network of Fens waterways. There’s certainly plenty to see and do in
and around the Spalding area, and all under Lincolnshire’s famous “big skies”.
Whatever you decide to do, the Town Centre Management Team sincerely hopes that you enjoy this guide and your visit
to Spalding and that you will come again and, also tell your family and friends about us!
Very Best Wishes,
Dennis Hannant MBE

The HeritageTrail -
A step back in time...
Start your walk on Broad Street, in the centre of Spalding. Here you will find one of the
most spectacular buildings in the town, an 18th Century Manor House which is now home
to the Spalding Constitutional Club (1) Just up from the Constitutional Club, you will find
another tradition in the form of the Spalding Gentlemen’s Society (2) One of the oldest in
the country, with an impressive list of past members, the club is still active today.
Continue your stroll past the Lincolnshire Poacher (3) and down to the bank of the River
Welland; the river which the town grew up around and the embankments of which were
built by the Romans. With the river on your left, take a short walk to cross over High Bridge
(4) . This river crossing has existed since medieval times, although the current bridge dates
back to 1838 and was originally called the Coronation Bridge.
On the other side of the bridge, follow the river to your right and enjoy the scenery until you
reach Ayscoughfee Hall Museum and Gardens (5). This grade I listed building is steeped
in history and beautiful architecture and is surrounded by 5 acres of magnificent gardens.
With your historical house senses filled, trace your steps back along the river. This time,
don’t cross the bridge, but rather continue your river walk until you reach
Chain Bridge Forge Museum (6), a lovingly restored 18th Century building.
Ayscoughfee Museum, Spalding
Continuing your walk along the river and down Holbeach Road, you will come to St Pauls
Church (7). This stunning church was designed by the same architect who is responsible
for St Pancras station. You are now just a stone’s throw from Springfields Outlet
Shopping and Festival Gardens (8). With an array of shops, restaurants and cafes, it is a
great place to catch your breath before hopping on the Water Taxi back into the centre of
town or getting one of the regular bus services.

AySCOuGHFEE HALL MuSEuM & GARDENS
A grade I listed Hall built in the 1450s, Ayscoughfee Hall Museum is a
hidden gem in Lincolnshire. Many of the Hall’s owners have left their mark
on the building, meaning that a visit to Ayscoughfee is a chance to experience
different architectural styles and features from the Medieval to the Victorian,
and the opportunity to come face to face with some of the people that lived
here. The Museum also tells the story of the historic town of Spalding and the
surrounding Lincolnshire Fens.
Many events take place throughout the year, including theatre productions,
craft fairs and band concerts - it’s always worth checking out our website for
more information. www.ayscoughfee.org
The Hall is set in five acres of beautiful gardens, which feature a listed War
Memorial by the celebrated architect Sir Edwin Lutyens, a childrens play
area and a café, all adding up to a fabulous day out.
Ayscoughfee Hall Museum
All this and it’s free to enter too. Check out the website for details.
The Hall is open 10.30am – 4pm, Wednesday to Sunday (open Bank
Holidays 10.30am – 4pm). The Gardens are open dawn to dusk, year round.

St Paul’s Church: The foundation stone of this church was
laid in 1877 and was completed 2 years later. This beautiful
church was designed by Sir Gilbert George Scott, an
architect, who designed a multitude of churches in the
latter Victorian era as well as the famous St Pancras Station.
It is an impressive church with seating for more than 300
parishioners.

Gordon Boswell. From artefacts and photos to actual
wagons, the museum houses an impressive collection

Pinchbeck Engine Museum: Built in 1833, this 20
horse-power A-frame low pressure condensing beam
engine lifted an average of 3,000,000 tons of water from the
land at a rate of 7,500 gallons per minute. As drainage
technology progressed, steam powered drainage engines
were replaced with diesel engines, and then with
electricity powered pumps. However, diesel engines were
never introduced on this site as the transition, in 1952, from
steam power to electricity was direct.

Moulton Mill: Built in 1822 by Robert King, Moulton Mill was a fully
functioning windmill, grinding wheat and other products. Over the
years, winds and storms damaged the Mill and many repairs have
been carried out. A campaign to restore the Mill to working order
was started and 14 years later, after £2m of investment, the final
sails were fitted. In April 2013, dreams were realised as, for the first
time in over 100 years, the Mill ground the first bag of flour using
wind power alone.
The nine-storeyed mill is 80 ft (24.4 metres) to the curb and 100 ft
(29.6 metres) to top of the cap. Moulton Mill is the tallest working
windmill in Great Britain and one of the tallest worldwide.

Crowland Abbey, Crowland
Crowland Abbey: Dating back to the 8th
Century, the abbey was dedicated to Saint Mary
the Virgin, Saint Bartholomew and Saint Guthlac.
After a fraught history, it is believed that the
majority of the damage took place after a short
siege by Parliamentarian forces in 1643. The
nave roof fell in 1720, the main south wall was
taken down in 1744. However, the north aisle of
the nave was refurbished and remains in use as
the parish church.
The church contains a skull which is identified as
the skull of the 9th century Abbot Theodore who
was killed at the altar by Vikings. Sadly the skull
is no longer on view to the public after it was
stolen in 1982, before being returned
anonymously in 1999.

Family Fun Trail -
family days to remember
Let the adventure begin...
From the climbing frames of the Fun Farm (6), to the award winning grotto at Baytree (5)
and from the quizzical Maze in Maize (8) to the fast thrill of the Scalextric track (4), there is
plenty to keep families busy in the Fens. A must is the historical Chain Bridge Forge
Museum and Innovation Centre (1), with it’s FREE admission it’s well worth the short
stroll from the town centre. From the more seasonal attractions to some good warm indoor
fun, you and the family have plenty to keep you entertained as you create your own days to
remember.
If the sun is shining and the weather is warm, why not head over to Jurrasic Golf,
Springfields (2). Open from March through to November, this prehistoric themed, nine
holed crazy golf course is a fun attraction the whole family can enjoy. Why not climb aboard
the Springfields Miniature Railway (SMR) (2) new for 2015 displaying silhouettes and
models of some of the other local attractions. While you’re there, the younger members of
the family can weave and climb their way around the Jack and the Beanstalk themed indoor
play area in the Playbarn (2). This multi level play structure houses the highest beanstalk
slide in the country and is open all year round; a perfect excuse to hide indoors on those
wetter, chillier days.
Springfields Outlet Shopping
and Festival Gardens
Based near Weston, Baytree (5) is much more than just a garden centre. While its
selection of home grown plants is outstanding, it is also home to one of the best Santa’s
Grottos in the country. People travel from far and wide to experience this festive
spectacular. While you enjoy a few roasted chestnuts and a glass of mulled wine, the
children can feed the reindeer and see Father Christmas. However, if yours is not a
Yuletide visit, then don’t worry, outside its restaurant and coffee bar is a playground for the
children and right next door you will find yet another indoor play centre and the local
Laserstorm (7).
We’re only just scratching the surface of the fantastic range of family activities on offer, so
to help you plan your own family day to remember, we’ve created a seasonal list of places
to go and things to do... Enjoy!

The Crescent is a beautiful area, just off the main marketplace, which is made up of a wonderful selection of independent shops. The
Bookmark, an award winning bookshop not only stocks a fantastic selection of books and gifts, but also hides a lovely café at the back
of the store.
Foodies can spoil themselves in Sergi’s Deli where you will find a mouthwatering selection of cheeses, cured meats, olives, pastries
and much more. Gentlemen have two fantastic outfitters to choose from. The very classic J. F. Inkley’s stocks everything from suits to
jackets and jumpers to hats and the service can only be described as perfectly old fashioned and attentive. For more modern, casual
wear, Robert Goddard stocks the well known brands such as Gant and Ted Baker.
For the interior designers, both Austin John Interiors and Wrights Carpets showcase some great inspiration and offer unrivaled expertise.
From dressmakers to jewellers, hairdressers to cafes, the Crescent has much more to offer anyone who wanders down its pavements.

Unique, Traditional and Independent...
While towns are taken over by the high street giants, Spalding is proud of its
independent traders; from its traditional outdoor clothing stockist to the classic model
shop, beautiful florists and gift stores to restaurants and cafes.
Every year, the independents of the town celebrate Independents Day on the 4th July.
As well as celebrating their independent status, they entice shoppers in with some
wonderful offers.
Working together, the independent traders represent a very unique asset of the town
and aim to make their stores a wonderful shopping experience for everyone who
comes through their doors.
Focusing on good old fashioned service and quality, they have stood the test of time
when many other towns have suffered.

One of England's largest parishes, the
area has several fine churches. The Parish
Church of All Saints, largely built in the 14th
Century, has a particularly fine turreted north
porch which is believed to have been salvaged
from the nearby castle of Thomas de Moulton
when it became a ruin. The St. Mary
Magdalene Church in nearby Gedney is
also well worth seeing.
Seasonal events such as the Summer
Vintage Tractor Rally and the impressive
Christmas Fayre, make Holbeach well
worth a visit.
The Royal Air Force maintains a
bombing range, known officially as
RAF Holbeach, on salt marshland
at the coast of Holbeach parish,

The Real Ale Trail -
family days to remember
The Ale Trail
Start your trail at The Priors Oven (1). Based in the town centre, this micropub is all
about the pub experience. Situated in one of Spalding’s oldest and most beautiful buildings,
with a high ceiling and octagonal bar, the Priors Oven is the place to pop in to for a chat
and an amazing pint. There is always a new ale on offer and a friendly face to engage in
conversation; whatever the time of day!
Just around the corner, you’ll find The Ivy Wall (2). A step away from the more traditional
establishments you’ll have visited previously, this large, open pub is run by the well-known
Weatherspoon’s chain. Selection is the order of the day here; be it food or drink you’re after
and the regular deals they have on offer make this an appealing stop for the wallet too!
The next pub on the Ale Trail line up is The Red Lion Hotel (3). This 18th Century, family
run hotel offers a place to rest your head, as well as a great selection of beers… With a
minimum of 4 real ales on offer at any one time, this long standing gem has made its way
into the Good Beer guide once again for 2015.
The Lincoln Arms (4) is stop four on the trail and is within site of the last pub’s entrance.
This warm and friendly pub offers a great selection of regularly changed guest ales and
occasional live music.
Dating back to 1553, with its thatched roof, oak beams and open fires, Ye Olde White
Horse (5) is thought to be the oldest building in Spalding and is the last pub on the Ale
Trail. In addition to its great Ale selection, it also has a tasty menu, beer garden and
Jenga to keep you entertained while you enjoy a cheap pint.
The town is now your oyster, with a selection of places to go and things to do; why not flick
through some of the other sections in this guide to send you on another Day to Remember?

The Church Trail The Area’s finest...
family days to remember
In Lincolnshire you can find one of the finest collections of medieval churches
of any county in England, with several given a mention in Simon Jenkins’
‘England’s Thousand Best Churches’.
These fine churches were built in the perpendicular style on the wealth of the
wool trade. Some have suggested that influential land owners were trying to
buy a place in the afterlife...
Whatever the story, the churches of South Holland offer far more than
renowned architecture and centuries of service - with the faithful offering their
petitions to this day. Fayres and fragrant floral festivals offer a taste of heaven
throughout the year; be moved by the art, music and special events.
A feast of floral festivals...
Most of the churches across South Holland run flower festivals, always
popular with visitors and residents alike. Refreshments, lunches, plant sales
and crafts are here to be enjoyed. With over 30 flower festivals each year,
those with green fingers are always striving to create new, amazing and
inspiring displays.
Floral delights begin in the fortnight around the May Day bank holiday and
continue through to September. Flower festivals can also be visited over
most weekends from the end of June to the end of July with a further fragrant
flurry over the August bank holiday weekend.
Flower Festivals brochures are available locally and can be downloaded from
the local Churches Together website - which also lists and maps the churches
across the district: www.ctspad.org.uk.

A Living Heritage Trail...
The oldest churches are found in a ring around the Wash,
roughly in a line that follows the A151 and A17 on the dry
lands that rose above the fens. The western border
includes the ruins of Sempringham Abbey amongst the
line of churches along the A15.
From East to West, at the gateway to Lincolnshire, visit St
Matthew’s, Sutton Bridge - the only flint-faced church in
South Lincolnshire. Long Sutton has the unusual spire of
St. Mary's, said to be the oldest, highest and most perfect
wooden spire in Europe. Visible from the A17 is ‘The
Cathedral of the Fens’ as Gedney’s St Mary Magdalene
church has been called; it’s noted for its clerestory of 12
closely spaced windows.
The church of St Mary Magdalene, Fleet, has an attractive
lych gate and a detached steeple and, in Holbeach, the
entrance porch to All Saints church resembles a castle.
All Saints, Moulton, is famous for its Adam and Eve font.
Head south to Moulton Chapel and the 1722 octagonal
church of St James, complete with balcony. A detour to
St Mary’s, Cowbit reveals links back to 1384 and Spalding
Priory. Return to St Mary’s, Whaplode, to see the
monument to the local family, the Irby’s, and St Mary’s,
Weston, has some colourful kneelers.
Approaching Spalding, St Paul’s is the last church
designed by Sir George Gilbert Scott (who also designed
The Midland Hotel at St Pancras; his grandson designed
the red telephone kiosk).
St Mary & St Nicolas, dates from 1284 with roots back to
1051 and links to Spalding Grammar School from 1568;
restored by Gilbert Scott.
Heading north, it’s easy to spot Surfleet St Laurence with
the tip of its spire some six feet out of true. Continue on
through Gosberton, passing the Baptist church, built in
1666.
St. Mary and the Holy Rood, Donington has memorials
to local lad, the 19th Century explorer Matthew Flinders,
famous for surveying much of the Australian coast.

The Great Outdoors Trail -
family days to remember
Encouraging you to explore...
Surrounded by open marshes, breathtaking countryside and wildlife aplenty, Lincolnshire is
a beautiful county to enjoy outdoors. In and around Spalding, you will find some picturesque
walks, beautiful nature reserves and activities for people of all ages to enjoy.
The waterways of the Fens are a wonderful way to enjoy the area. From the picturesque
scenery to the abundance of wildlife – nothing beats meandering through the waterways via
boat. The Water Taxi – running from the town centre to Springfields Outlet Shopping
& Festival Gardens - is a fantastic way to enjoy the scenery as you make your way to the
outskirts of the town. For a more adventurous day, Self Drive Boat Hire puts you in control
of your water experience. Take a picnic or stop at a pub and relax while you take in the
beautiful views from the river Welland. Boats have a canopy for those hotter days, a heater
for the chillier days and are available for full and half day hire. 2014 saw a new addition to
the waterway with... Narrow Boat Hire. The 47ft Narrowboat aptly named ''All Well and
Good'' is ideal for day hire, over night stays or short breaks. Sleeping up to 6 people, you
can cruise along the Fenland corridors, lock free; a tranquil and unique way to enjoy your
trip to Lincolnshire.
Vernatts Nature Reserve, Spalding
Riverside Walk: The river Welland flows north from Crowland, through Spalding and
Fosdyke before heading out into the Wash. Separating Spalding in two, the river is a focal
point of the town. The long river banks that run either side of the Coronation channel create
a beautiful walk from the town centre out to Springfields Outlet Shopping & Festival
Gardens. Whether you just want to get some fresh air and watch the bird life on the river
or whether you are looking to do a bit of large scale treasure hunting in the form of
Geocaching, the river offers a lovely walk, whatever the weather.

Maze in Maize – If you fancy doing something a little quirky, then head
over to the Maze in Maize. Every year a new maze is created, based on a
specific theme. From seahorses and giraffes to Pharaohs and Doctor
Who, it’s a fantastic way to spend the day. Once you’ve navigated your
way through the maze, you can rest and recuperate while having a tea,
coffee, ice cream or cool drink in the picnic area. The day doesn’t have to
end there either as there are giant games, puzzles, a bale mountain and
Go-Karts to keep you entertained for many hours more.
Peter Scott Walk: Following the old sea bank along the Wash from
King's Lynn to the Peter Scott lighthouse at Sutton, the Peter Scott Walk
stretches from the mouth of the River Nene to the ferry crossing at King's

scenery as you stroll down the sea wall along the coast of the Wash and
North Fens. To pick up the start of the walk, you can take the passenger

Vernatts Nature Reserve: Based right in the centre of
Spalding, this nature reserve serves to protect a
variety of animals and plants. The beautiful green
space creates an idyllic location to sit back, relax and
enjoy nature. The reserve is made up of a woodland
strip, a wildflower meadow and a mixture of marshland
and reed beds. While the reserve may look “wild”,
every part of it is designed to provide the best habitat
for the plants and animals within it. It can be reached
from the Royal Mailcart Public House on Pinchbeck
Road, from Sharp's Bridge on Pinchbeck Road and
from Chiltern Drive Playing Field off West Elloe
Avenue.
Spalding Leisure Wheel: Following many of the
local waterways, the Leisure Wheel is a walk which
takes in some of the nature and history that the town
has to offer. Starting at the Water Taxi, continuing
through Arnold’s Meadow Nature Reserve, down the
river bank and past the yacht Club, the walk also
takes in the pumping station at Pode Hole, St Paul’s
Church on Holbeach Road and Springfields Festival
Gardens and Outlet Centre. The Leisure Wheel is a
fantastic way to enjoy the sights and sounds of
Spalding.

RSPB Frampton Marsh: Signposted from the A16
between Spalding and Boston is an impressive costal
wetland reserve. From one of the 4 hides, you can sneak
a 360 degree view of the marsh or take a walk through
the 3km of footpaths there are to explore. Frampton
Marsh has been carefully designed to maximize the
value for the wildlife and bring it closer to you.
A recently developed visitor centre gives you somewhere
to escape the elements or grab a hot or cold drink and a
snack. The centre is open all year round, although
opening times do vary from season to season.
Gliding Club: Situated between Spalding and Crowland,
The Gliding Club is open to both members and visitors.
The club has some fantastic facilities including a clubhouse with kitchen and licensed bar, space for tents and
caravans as well as a children’s play area. Whether you
are an experienced glider or a complete novice looking to
try something new, the club aims to make this challenging
hobby enjoyable and interesting.
Cycle Hire at Grimsthorpe Castle: There are few better
ways to enjoy a spectacular summer’s day than to cycle
through the grounds of the stunning Grimsthorpe Castle.
With dedicated trails ranging from 9.6 – 3.1 miles in
distance, it’s a fantastic activity for adults and children
alike. There is no need to bring your own bikes as their
cycle hire gives you everything you need for your
adventure. The route has been designed with families in
mind and avoids steep inclines and rough terrain
wherever possible. Having taken in the scenery and
spotted the wildlife, you can meander back to the cycle
hire shop, which is just around the corner from the café
where there’s a fantastic selection of teas, drinks,
homemade cakes and sandwiches available.

delectable delis, you will be spoilt for choice with places to dine in the area.

years and their homemade fish cakes are a Spalding legacy!

Where to stay -
family days to remember
Spalding and South Holland offer a huge selection and delightful variety of places to rest
your head during your memorable stay.
From B&Bs to boutique hotels, self catering cottages and even caravan parks, you are spoilt
for choice.
"One particular gem is Woodhouse Farm Lodge (1). Sitting in 12 acres of grounds, this
extensively renovated Georgian styled mansion has been transformed into a boutique hotel
that features an indoor swimming pool, snooker room and health suite amongst its facilities.
The luxurious, spacious guest rooms are quiet and well appointed with modern furnishings,
sumptuous bed linens, flat screen televisions and free wireless internet.
Conveniently located, Spalding town centre and the railway/bus stations are less than 5
minutes away by car. Woodhouse Farm Lodge (1) is also within easy reach of the
The South Holland Centre, Ayscoughfee Hall Museum and Gardens, Chain Bridge
Forge Museum and Baytree Garden Centre. Springfields Outlet Shopping and
Festival Gardens is literally a stone's throw away with its fantastic selection of shops,
restaurants and cafes."
A little further afield, you will also find The Mansion House Hotel (4) in Holbeach. This old
building is steeped in history and is thought to date back to the 17th Century and is best
known as the birthplace of Sir Norman Angell, the Nobel Peace Prize Winner of 1933 who
was born in the house in 1872. Conveniently located within easy reach of Spalding, Kings
Lynn and Boston, this tastefully decorated hotel offers all the modern comforts within some
truly historic surroundings.

If self-catering is more to your liking, then make sure you review the choice of self-catering
cottages on offer from Fenland Self Catering Holidays (7). Relax and enjoy a wonderful
break in a peaceful rural setting. They have a selection of one, two or three bedroom
cottages, some with open fires, all with free wifi. If you like to take your dog away with
you, then you’ll be pleased to know that dogs are also welcome!
