Now 75, Bob Graham
was born in Coral
Gables and graduated
from the University
of Florida. A life long
Democrat, he served
38 consecutive years in
public office and never
lost an election. He
was the 38th Governor
of Florida, serving two
terms, from 1979 to
1987. Graham also
served three terms as
United State Senator
from 1987 to 2005. His
current priority is “The
Bob Graham Center
for Public Service” at
his alma mater, the
University of Florida.
Gov. Graham has
four daughters and 11
grandchildren.
It was 25 years ago when he was
governor, that Bob Graham,
approved the renovation of the San
Carlos in Key West by the group
of Cuban-Americans led by Rafael
Peñalver, who still serves as President
of the San Carlos Institute. This past
weekend, Penalve` was proud to give
the former governor his first tour of
the historic Cuban landmark since
the renovation was completed.

tree and an extensive orchid
collection grace the grounds.
OIRF’s second tour of this winter
season takes a path through 1912.
During the evening tour, let twilight
casts an illusion of Key West when
the Railroad first arrived.

When the railroad came to town,
a cigar maker called this modest
Greek-revival cottage near the top of
Solaris Hill home. The intervening
years were not kind, and the house
was quite dilapidated when new
owners took possession in 2009.
Enter its front door now and fastforward a hundred years into a
modern minimalist masterpiece of
interior design; a living space akin
to a sophisticated New York City loft
apartment.
A pavilion-like cottage, done in a
Caribbean colonial style, is actually
a 1993 addition to this early 20th C.
neighborhood. Back then, several
shotgun houses for local cigar factory
workers stood in the vicinity; before
a fire in 1923 demolished most.

Saturday, January 20 and 21, from

This elegant “Eyebrow Conch”
was crafted by a ship’s carpenter,
Edward Roberts, c.1885 and his
widow, Leonora, still lived there in
1912. All the charming carpenter
Gothic embellishments were retained
during a major 1990’s renovation.

For ten years, the Florida Keys have
had the services of the most effective
congressional representative to ever
represent the Keys. Congresswoman
Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, better known to
her many friends in the Keys as “Ily”,
has done more to address Keys’ issues
than any congressperson before her.
She has spent more time here than any
other Congressman. Ily has also been
the most accessible for any Federal
problem or issue that concern Keys
residents.
Yes, she has become one of my
closest friends over the years, and she
has made me extremely proud as she
became a champion of gay rights. The
fact is she had nothing to gain in her
leadership for equality for everyone.
She did it because it was “the right
thing to do”.
And as far as helping out the
Florida Keys, Ily has only done it
because she fell in love with the
Florida Keys when we became a part
of her district at the last redistricting
process ten years ago. Each of
Florida’s 27 congressional districts will
be redrawn to hold 696, 345 residents.
The 2010 census put Monroe County
at close to 73,000 residents. These
figures clearly show that the Keys are
only 10 % of Ily’s total electorate. The
bottom line is that our vote has always
been inconsequential in Congressional
elections.
But none the less, our
Congresswoman has fought hard
for every issue that has affected the
Keys over the last ten years. From
issues involving the National Marine
Sanctuary, clean shore water issues,
waste water issues, environmental
issues, offshore drilling, insurance
issues, etc. our congresswoman has
been there for us and has even brought
home huge Federal money for the
Keys. Ily has always been a champion
of the Keys commercial fishermen and
shrimpers.
Furthermore, she has done so much
for the Keys, she has won the hearts of
many die hard Democrats (I was one!)
with her years of selfless and dedicated
service. Speaking from my experience
alone, her staff has helped me assist
countless Keys residents with Visa
issues, green card issues, and social
security issues. They have even helped
me set up folks who visit D.C. with
White House tours. And her office
door in D.C. is always open to Keys
residents.
As I write this there are four
different plans in the State House
that would take the Keys away from
the Congresswoman, even though
she has made it clear that she would
like to keep the Keys in her district.
Unfortunately many of the plans are
mere ploys for some state politicians
to boost their voting inside their
projected future districts.
The State Senate’s redistricting plan
is the only one that makes sense and
follows a logical district line for Ily that
would keep her as the representative
for all the coastal communities from
Miami Beach to Key West, a clean
district delineation that would make
sense for keeping her on top of all the
coastal and water issues that she has
represented so well over the last ten
years. The fact is the fishing industry
sorely needs her knowledgeable
representation.
Imagine if they throw the Keys
to a district that includes Hialeah
and the western farm country of
south Florida? The Keys would be so
forgotten, we would have little if any
congressional representation. Just like
our state senate seat, the Keys will be
a lost cause. When is the last time we
saw our state senator down here, or
anyone from their office? That would
be our future without Ily.
There is no clear answer on how to
let Tallahassee know how we feel, that
we want to keep our congresswoman.
But it might not hurt to call Rep. Will
Weatherford, the chairman of the
redistricting committee at (850)4883928 and let him know how you
feel. Or you can email him and the
committee at mydistrictbuilder@
myfloridahouse.gov
If we make enough noise, the
redistricting committee just might do
the right thing, and let common sense
prevail. Let’s keep Ily!

The Monroe County Special
Olympics will benefit at happy hour
this Friday, January 13th from 5
to 8 PM at The BottleCap Groove
Lounge. From a backyard summer
camp for people with intellectual
disabilities to a global movement,
The Special Olympics has been
changing lives and attitudes for more
than 43 years. The mission of Special
Olympics is to provide year-round
sports training and for people with
intellectual disabilities who wish to
participate, giving them continuing
opportunities to develop physical
fitness, demonstrate courage,
experience joy and participate
in the sharing of gifts, skills, and
friendship with their families, other
Special Olympics athletes, and the
community. Activities that The
Monroe County Special Olympics
participate in include bocce,
bicycling, swimming, bowling and
paddle boarding.
During happy hour, bartender’s
gratuities will benefit Special
Olympics. There will be a silent
auction, great food and raffles

Cordone on February 2, 2012 during
the Caroline Street Art Walk from
6 - 9 p.m. This is Christine’s second
show and is excited to share her new
works. The show is titled “Saturday
Mornings” which is exactly when all
paintings were created. Christine by

expression

open air”.
Christine
has
included
some
eateries in
this year’s
collection

Michaels, Café Sole, The Creperie and
Salute. Along with some water scenes,
there is even a picture of Jimmy
Buffett’s recording studio. Christine‘s
watercolors dazzle the eye with a
play of light and bold strokes of true
colors. She has been best known
on the music scene as a singersongwriter, guitarist and entertainer.
Her motto is “sing your pictures and
paint your songs”.

to Key West at a dinner at Beachside’s Tavern and

Officer Henry Arroyo Welcomed Back
to KWPD
Police Chief Donie Lee welcomed
back a native son last week when
he swore in Officer Henry Arroyo.
Officer Arroyo is returning to the
Key West Police Department after
just a few months on the mainland.
Originally, he worked for the
Department from September
of 1999 until April of 2011.
During those years, Officer
Arroyo earned numerous
commendations, including
recognition in 2000 by the
FBI for exceptional service
in the public interest. He
also earned several Chief ’s
Commendations. Before
leaving in April, Officer
Arroyo served as the School
Resource Officer for Horace
O’Bryant Middle School. In

High school youth who have been a

Keys (BTC) have been asking for
the return of Challenge Day, the
organization’s signature program for
more than two years. In January they
will get their wish. Alex Castillo,

as a freshman and ever since has

art mural commemorating the
centennial anniversary of the
completion of Henry Flagler’s
Florida Keys Over-Sea Railroad.
Situated near mile marker 95, the
mural measures 60 feet wide and
11.5 feet high and was created
members of the Purple Isles Art
Guild working with Island Christian
School painters. The large artwork
depicts a train steaming across
the Long Key Viaduct. Above the
bridge is a full moon adorned with
the face of Flagler, one of Florida’s
pioneering developers who died in
1913. Creation of the mural is one
of many Keys events being staged
to mark the Jan. 22, 1912, Key West
arrival of Flagler’s first train from

Kids Come First With Dr. Jara
The mission of the U. S. Marine Corps
Reserve Toys for Tots Program is to collect
new, unwrapped toys during October,
November and December each year, and
distribute those toys as Christmas gifts
to needy children in the community in
which the campaign is conducted. KCF
received more than 1,000 toys, athletic
equipment, and games from the Marines.
Kids Come First (KCF) was in full swing
for the recent
holidays. The season
for giving proved
to be a big one this
year, both in need
and in donations
as contributions
from community
organizations
and individuals
were received and
distributed. KCF
was a recipient of
the generosity and
energy of Toys for
Tots, a program
of the U.S. Marine Corps Reserves.
Jesus Jara met in December with Capt.
Michael Biggs at the 5th Annual Beards
and Grins for the Boys and Girls to view
the gifts that were distributed to 472
youth, predominantly through Monroe
County schools. Dr. Jara facilitated the
use of a school bus needed to transport
the large amount of toys and gifts
received by KCF.

The effects of the work done by the Rev. Dr. Martin
Luther King will be celebrated on Saturday January
14th at the beautiful Casa Antigua located at 314
Simonton Street, Key West. The event starts at 7
PM with dinner and song. Leading Restaurants and

The thirteen musicians of Miami’s acclaimed Firebird Chamber Orchestra come
from all over the country and are all in their thirties or younger.
The highlight of the Firebird Impromptu concert last Sunday was Vivaldi’s “The
Four Seasons”.

Bobby Nesbitt Opens His Sixth Remarkable Season of “Bobby In The Lobby”
With Two Sold Out Shows Ending with Two Standing Ovations
Bobby Nesbitt opened his
sixth season of Bobby in the
Lobby with a tribute to Oscar
Hammerstein, a giant of
American song. The evening
reunited former Miss America,
Susan Powell with Danny
Weathers, artistic director of
the Waterfront Playhouse. The
two had worked together 25
years ago in NYC in the musical
“Olympus on My Mind”. The
evening featured beloved songs
that Hammerstein wrote not
only with Richard Rodgers
but also Jerome Kern. Susan
soared in “What’s the Use of
Wondering” and “It Might As
Well Be Spring” and Danny
brought the house down in his
interpretation of “Old Man
River”. The final medley was the
ultimate show tune medley and
brought the cheering crowd to
it’s feet.
And amazing show with three amazing singers, Danny
Weathers, former Miss America Susan Powell, and
series creator, the one and only Bobby Nesbitt. This
was the fifteenth show in the successful “Bobby in
The Lobby” series.

Great White Heron Saved from Lion Fish on New Year’s Day
A Great White Heron is found in distress on New
Year’s day with his head on the ground.
The lion fish after being pulled out of the
heron’s throat.
The Great White Heron is released back into the
wild after a successful recovery.
On New Year’s Day, late
in the afternoon, Maya
Totman from Florida
Keys Wildlife Rescue
got a call from Big Pine
Fishing Lodge that they
had a Heron in severe
distress.On our arrival at
the Fishing Lodge we met
with Tom Woosey and his
wife Lois of Fort Myers.
They immediately showed
us where the bird was.
His head was buried in
seagrass, he was covered
with dirt and breathing
heavily. I noticed swelling
and there was something
in his throat. With help
from Tom Woosey’s pliers,
I opened the beak wide,
and Tom pulled out a
Lion Fish. Lois Woosey
got a measuring tape and
when she measured the
Lion Fish it was close to 8”
long. Arriving back at our
facility, Maya looked inside
bird’s mouth and found
two more embedded
pieces of of the Lion Fish’s
spine, which she removed.
Maya made sure that any
and all material was cleared
from the wound. Then she
gave the heron emergency
treatment with a rapid
application of hot water
and liquid soap, a Tetanus
shot, pain medication, and
antibiotics. They lubricated
the birds eyes and also
used eye ointment.
Because Lion Fish spines
are poisonous, the heron
had breathing difficulties
and semi paralysis. Maya
was not sure if the bird
was going to make it. Day
after day, and night, after
night they kept checking
to make sure that the bird
was still alive. He started to
recovering in late afternoon
on Wednesday. Thursday,
January 5, he stood up
and began to walk around.
On Friday he ate on his
own for the first time and
then he started to try to
fly. They released him on
Saturday at 3:00 pm on
Little Torch state road 4 A.
Maya wants to thank all of
their volunteers for being
there and to give a special
thanks to Tom and Lois
Woosey for finding the
heron and calling Florida
Keys Wildlife Rescue. They
also want to thank Big Pine
Shipping for the donation
of a special carton carrier
that was put together for
him. When they opened
the box it was miraculous
-- he was flying back to
freedom over the skies of
the Florida Keys.
Tom Woosey and Maya Totman discovered that the Great White Heron had
tried to swallow a poisonous 8 inch long lion fish. He helped hold the beak
open while she managed to extract the lion fish from its throat.

Annie Dillard Featured

After a stellar career in literature,
Pulitzer Prize recipient Annie
Dillard has focused her creative
talents on the visual arts. She
presenedt a Vernisage of her
artwork this past Saturday, January
7, at The Gallery on Greene, 606
Greene St.in Key West.
“Pulitzer Prize-winning poet,
novelist, and memoirist Annie
Dillard − best known for ‘Pilgrim
at Tinker Creek,’ ‘Holy the Firm,’
and ‘Teaching a Stone to Talk’ − is
also a talented and prolific painter,”
writes Wall Street Journal art critic
Ann Landi in the magazine Art
News. “Largely self-taught, Dillard
generally works in oil and gouache
and always on a small scale, her
canvases rarely more than 16 inches
to a side. A self-portrait made when
she was in her early thirties shows
her wielding a brush and looking
rather morose about it, but other
works in the show, including some
landscapes, reveal an ebullience and
a sure sense of color and line.”
Dillard is known for her
keen observations of nature, and
many of her works are dedicated
to the land and sea that surround
her at her seasonal abodes. Her
homes in Key West, Cape Codand
Virginia, as well as places she
visits, are subjects of her artistry.
Dillard’s landscapes depict, at times,
an oriental stylization, perhaps
influenced by her visit to Chinaas
a U.S. Cultural Delegate in 1982.
Works such as “TibetanVillage” and
“Cape Cod Scene” use geometric
forms evolving into the abstract.
Of late Dillard has painted
portraits of strong personalities
such as Stanley McChrystal, a Sierra
Leoneorphan, and Thelonius Monk.
Her portrait of Monk depicts a solid,
somber Monk in sienna and black on
an olive background.
According to Ann Landi,
“Dillard’s voice, here, as in her
writing, is very much her own:
assured, perceptive and sometimes
dazzling.”

West Literary Seminar, Dillard met
art aficionados at The Gallery on

last year but were put on the back burner for

Aquarius: Funny how things work out, endings,

to the future is never an easy enterprise but it

problems coming out of the closet for you to
