New Year’s Holiday
Do you request books and resources through
the Library’s shared catalog? Have you received a
bestseller that was actually owned by a different
library? If so, you have used the delivery service
of the regional library system. This service is the
backbone of interlibrary loan, allowing you to borrow books from other libraries around the state by
efficiently moving the books from lending library
to borrowing library and back again. This delivery
service is at risk of disappearing due to delayed
payment of state funds allotted to the regional
library systems.
Illinois’ regional library systems were created
by state legislation in 1965 to encourage library
resource-sharing. Each of the nine regional
library systems serves the libraries in its specific
geographic area. The Plainfield Library belongs
to the Prairie Area Library System (PALS), which
serves 27 counties in northern Illinois. But with
regional library systems owed millions of dollars from the State of Illinois and no payments
expected until January 2011, the regional systems
shut down all other library support services and
laid off staff in order to preserve interlibrary loan
and delivery for as long as possible. Without
additional payments from the State, interlibrary
loan and delivery services could cease as early
as November.
What happens if delivery service ceases? Without
efficient and cost-effective delivery service, your
ability to request books from other libraries may
be severely curtailed. For you, that means driving
to the library that owns a book in order to check
it out and driving back to return it. Students
wouldn’t be able to borrow books from colleges
and universities around the state. You may wait
longer for popular books, movies and music. In
short, the advantages of library resource-sharing
could be lost.
To ask the Governor to release funds needed
to continue Interlibrary Loan and Delivery: visit
www.illinois.gov/gpv/contactthegovernor.cfm,
send mail to: Office of the Governor, James R.
Thompson Center, 100 W. Randolph, Suite 16100, Chicago, IL 60601 or call 312-814-2121.
