State Director of Medicaid Services Steve Fitton planning to retire;
MAHP expresses appreciation.
Steve Fitton, longtime Medicaid Director for Michigan, will be retiring this summer, the Michigan
Association of Health Plans has learned. The following can be attributed to Rick Murdock, MAHP
executive director.
Steve Fitton will be sorely missed by the MAHP team and our members.
We have highly valued our relationship with Steve and his team, and the openness and integrity
that he handled his role and mission through the administrations of several governors.
It is important for Michigan to realize that under Steve’s leadership, our state’s Medicaid
program continued its stellar record for service, delivery, and innovation.
He has been integral in:
•
The launch and continued enrollment growth of the extraordinarily successful Healthy
Michigan Program.
•
Launching the state’s demonstration program for persons with dual eligibility for
Medicare and Medicaid, which we expect will result in improvements in services to some
of our state’s most vulnerable seniors while providing cost savings overall.
•
Sustaining one of the highest performing Medicaid managed care programs in the United
States, one that has saved taxpayers hundreds of millions of dollars while improving
outcomes for beneficiaries.
•
Preparing the state for a new bid process in the next phase of Michigan’s managed
Medicaid program.
Steve is and has been seen as a national thought leader on Medicaid programming. It’s never a
good time for person with Steve’s responsibility to leave. But we understand the timing and wish
Steve the best in his future plans.
The Michigan Association of Health Plans (MAHP) is an industry voice for 17 health care plans, covering over 2.5
