Fruits of Your Labor - Canvasbacks

The ever-popular David Maass has been selected as DU’s International Artist of the Year
for 2004-05. Marking the fourth print in the “Fruits of Your Labor” series, Maass has
captured the splendor of a flock of Canvasbacks landing in a Ducks Unlimited project.
The Ducks Unlimited 2004/05 International Artist of the Year print will include a medallion
inlaid in the mat. As is customary, a small artist proof edition of the 2004 Fruits of Your
Labor series will be available to the retail market in the fall of 2005. A portion of these
sales will benefit Ducks Unlimited conservation programs.
As an avid conservationist, David Maass continues to foster efforts which benefit wildlife.
He has won over 33 duck and conservation stamp competitions, including two federal
duck stamp contests. He has generously donated his artwork to various groups both
nationally and internationally to help raise millions to restore habitat.

Mixed Bag

Jim Hansel was diagnosed at an early age with an eye
condition that left him legally blind. Despite his disability
and not seeing the images clearly, he uses magnifiers and
vision aids to capture wildlife images on canvas in
amazing detail. Through hard work and persistence, he
has overcome his visual limitations and has become a
very successful artist. Making his debut to the Ducks
Unlimited National Art Package with his rendition of “The
Challenge,” Hansel’s work is sure to turn heads.

Event Underwriting
Underwriting reduces expenses of your event. Use cash gifts to offset the cost of various
components of the event, i.e., Art Package or other Event Merchandise, Hats, Guns, Printing,
Facility, Food.
Select a Chairperson for Underwriting. This is a major assignment for one who has contacts
with potential major donors in the community.
Use this Underwriting Solicitation Package Workbook provided by Ducks Unlimited. The cash
underwriting target should be 3 times the committee cost (see catalog order form). Copy or
detach the pages to allow several committee members to canvass the community. Assign each
solicitor a group of businesses in order to reduce overlapping contacts.
Show the Auction Items to the Public, (e.g., place several framed prints in a bank lobby,
especially if the bank has underwritten them.)
Recognize the Underwriters:
Display banners provided by the underwriter during the event
✦ Put up signs bearing the underwriter’s name on or near the underwritten items
✦ Give the underwriter a certificate and a donor decal
✦ Put the underwriter’s name in the banquet program
✦ Send the underwriter a “thank you” note
✦
Report the Underwriting Contribution in the appropriate space on the financial report form
because it will impact your overhead by lowering costs (line #10 on the Financial Report).
Treat it as “negative expense,” not income!
Ask Early, Ask Often. When it comes to underwriting gifts, don’t wait.
